@liamjd1 I think that might be a bit outdated.  Can you still use it? Probably not but I'm not sure. I don't have the eldar codex on me right now.

@liamjd1 To be honest it depends on who you play with. Over where I come from, GW stuff in my country is expensive enaugh to prevent people from buyng new codex and rulebooks, so it's pretty common for people to play 3rd edition if the other person has no cash to update all the books. There are people who will be more than happy to either present you to new content, or play on old rulesets. (just depends on the community - would be best to visit a gamestore and ask there or on forums)

The "distance dice" is actually an artillery dice from warhammer fantasy, not 40k to my knowledge.

Though many models are re-used in each army there are major differences. AKA you can't put Marneus(?) Calgar in a space wolf army. I play Space marines, orks and have a small bunch of tyranids ( say ti-ra-nidz)

@lvl12cleric interesting fact starship troopers was actually based off nids and the IG armies, think about how they get promoted in SST and how they get promoted in warhammer 40k they go up in rank due to death of a superior officer, both have a hive planet for their bugs and both use bugs as mainly melee armies, the main differance is nids in SST have a better armor save lol

@WGConsortium race and then went into a sort of hibernation until their tomb worlds were disturbed by other races battling on them, i would suggest picking up the necron codex only for the fact that it is beautifully written and has great art work, the army i would not play as they are underpowered right now due to the 5th edition rule change for glancing hits on vehicles and the 5th edition vehicles being more commonly used, tau are actually the only race still inventing new technology btw

GW site is pretty good to see the range of minitures for each army and will give you a brief guide too the background fluff. I would say pick the army which background and fluff apeals too you most. Almost everything else too do with each army like how powerful they are changes all the time with each new rulebook. That being said the Eldar and Dark Eldar are probably not great for your first choice of armies unless you want a harsh learning curve

One of the first things you really need to know is that this is a very costly hobby be sure that you really want to invest the money before you even start. I am not trying to put you off the hobby it is very rewarding just be aware of the costs. Now these can be cut down a bit by using online retailers getting around 25% off saves a lot really quickly. Also Ebay can be a great way of saving money too.

If your getting into 40k I would recommend hitting up an online gamestore and buying the 5th edition mini rulebook that comes with the AoBR box, its about $20 and a fairly easy read. I think that would be the best initial investment to make if you are considering starting 40k, it is affordable and it will give you more insight over what the game is about than any other purchase that I can imagine.

Spacewolfs are the only way to go,,,,, unless ya like the others i guess ;) for starter army id go plain marines to get the hang of the game,, the others got rules and special units that might bog down a starting player, and a more casual paint compared the other codex marines. but for sure keep in mind the others for later when there more comfortable with the rules,,

@vanhammer73 Trouble with Marines is while they are a good starting point they are also the most dull force I can actually think off fluff wise. Spacewolfs might be slightly better but who on earth would really want to play a bunch of characters with about as much personality as spoon? "We are the space marines we are a bunch of daddy boys we kill stuff yada yada yada" More serious though go for what apeals to you no one can pick the right army for you. BTW I do have a space marine army too

@CichlidAsh yea that was kinda what i was going for,, being that there dull and if you factor in the plain marine codex marines you get a army list that lets you learn the core rules before you get into the fluff rules of the other types of armys. where a firsttime player would have trouble.

@vanhammer73 I guess that you are right it can be really hard to imagine not really knowing anything about the forces in 40k. The other advantage with Space Marines is that they are always in the starter sets and so will always be a bit cheaper to buy than other forces. People will always be selling them cheap from the starter sets too on the likes of Ebay if they are only after what ever the other force in the starter box set is at the time.

when i started playing i did not play with all of the rules, I ignored all of the tests, like morale, psychic powers, target selection etc,

Also, hunt on ebay for used armies, or retaillers that offer discounts. GW HATES ITS CUSTOMERS! so I am not going to pay full price for their junk.

Also, grass, ballast, plastic glue, superglue etc etc etc, should NEVER be GW brand: you get less for twice the price!

If you are playing Guard, then buy cheaper models than Gw's unless you plan on tournament
