  • bunch of morons arguing.

  • I spent four years as a HS debate member, and more @ university. The pace of speech today in HS debate has become so difficult to follow it is no longer about the actual merits, but who can "out speak," the other team (a similar issue happens during LD Debate). It's insane. One should offer his/her arguments in a way that, yes, the fast pace matters, but today, it seems to only characteristic that matters.

  • Dumb. This isn't arguing, speaking, or even talking in a civilized manner. This is barbaric. Terrible. Trying Congressional Debate, MUN, Lincoln Douglas, that is ridiculous.

  • Perfectly ridiculous!

  • goin here this sunday

  • same here.

  • haha, they sound like the guy in the video if you search : "80s Micro Machines Commercial"

  • "i've learned so much....that i never i thought i would ever knew"

    haha smart kids

  • This is so weird, did not interest me.

  • çççççç

  • If an English speaker tries to communicate with a non-English speaker, he speaks slower and louder. No? Remember Demosthenes, the pebble mouthed orator? And Plato? If you have no argument, you have no point - no matter how fast you try to flim-flam it. Say it faster and it's more true? Another failure of the American Educational System.

  • FAIL, thats why there is Lincoln Duglas, or Extemp, or Student Congress or, other lesser important formes of Debate, Policy debate is about argumentation, speed, delivery, quickness on your feet, and provides a thrill unexperienced in other forms, I know, I have tried them, time flies while competing in a policy debate round, even though it takes up to 90 minutes.

  • Might be a thrill, but it's not debate. It's useless as a debating tool. To communicate one has to be able to be understood. This is just bull sh*t.

  • are these what you call masterdebaters?

  • i hope some of these debaters can come humiliate ALL of these internet racists who have seemed to overpopulate youtube.

  • we most definately could.

  • techservices43: i hate spammers like you, you fatass donkey fucking assclown.

  • This is awesome. Fast talking keeps you awake. I'm taking some critical thinking and business communication classes in college. I don't think I could talk that fast and actually make a coherent argument, unless I was talking about something like you mentioned alternative energy. I just posted a new windmill design. Rant on.

  • Why in God's name should I apologize, I have nothing to apologize for this program is absurd. I still stand by my comments. This program is "Retarded." So unless someone wants to come up with a reasoned, logical, and intelligent response to why this is a good idea. I won't apologize.

  • Speed isn't the most important thing, and yeah a good arguement is a good arguement, but any sort of class that requires essays or something, it's usually timed. And if you aren't fast, you lose miserably.

Speed isn't even concerned with this video much. Speed is merely a good habit and definitely helps in a lot of situations that include debate.

  • still, i prefer my lazyness

  • This is absurd. Volume of Arguments doesn't prove your point. It's substance over quantity, not quantity. This is so damn dumb. The art of the argument is logic and rhetoric, not speed.

I knew Northwestern was buggered up, but this is above and beyond what I thought.

  • Listen here: if you've ever debated, one of the most important things in debate is word choice. Speaking words fast helps improve "fast" word choice, and speaking words loudly simply builds a good habit.

Argument construction and logic are important but being impressive is something a person must practice from the very beginning.

And, BTW, I am a debater so I would defend this activity. :P

And also, ALL past presidents have practiced debate, I believe, plus people who go on air practice it.

  • I have debated, and the most important part of reasoned and intellectual debate is not speed. It is reason, intelligence, and logic. Speed does nothing to increase any of those things. Don't you ever attempt to edify me on the rules of debate.

Speaking loudly is only used when your arguments are off base anyway to get your opponent to shut up.

You are confusing practiced debate and what the above video shows. So please come back when you get a clue.

  • Chill. Hey. I was not being aggressive, and I'm sorry if I sounded aggressive.

Any ways, back to the debate about debate. :)

Because generally, a lot of the debates I take part in are in large rooms, speaking loudly is a must. The judges rate me up and down on it.

Speaking quickly does nothing--you're right about that. But being able to speak at a normal pace while coming up with really good words is basically a result of practising fast speech (thus thinking fast) then toning it down a bit.

  • Now that I can agree with. I think there are other ways to get people to think fast other than making them talk like Alvin from the Chipmunks.

  • If you can learn to speak, hear, and recall point-by-point words spoken at an unreasonable speed, couldn't you do the same at normal, sane speeds that much better?

Granted, this would would mean fuck all if the person practicing lacked the logic and reasoning chops that a good debater needs, but it has be be of some use.

I agree with the loudness, though. You're right on the mark there. LOL SPEAKING LOUD IS A GOOD HABIT AND MAKES YOU A BETTER DEBATER.

  • Most CX matches end up with both teams throwing as much to the wall as possible and seeing what sticks. You have to read fast, because otherwise you will be buried alive by your opponents arguements.

  • So, an auctioneer would be a master debater?

  • Hmmm...Master-debaters...lol

  • i bet it took you a while to come up with that one huh?

  • What if I went there and debated like they did with superspeed not to mention I have an accent. So they would not understand me but still i said it right. So I think talking fast in a debate is bullshit therefore this shit is bullshit

  • thats y its for pros and not amatuers :P

  • bullsh*t

  • lol, "My mom and dad told me to get into debate because I argue with them all the time, and now I argue less with them and more in debate."

  • LOL.. If your daughter likes to argue, why would you send her to a place to become an expert at it...( FIIIINNNNEEE TAKE THE CAARRRR, JUST SHUT UP!!!!)

  • This isn't effective debating in anyway. An effective debate doesn't just basically throw as many facts out there as they can in order to get a point across.

  • I feel this school is actually quite interesting; debate can be an artform, a trade of ideas which forms criticism for information purposes. Those seeking to produce a final answer won't ever find it except in their own personal opinion. If you desire to attack someone empathetically goes against the actually positive nature of the thousands of years art-form, debate.

  • WTF! Bullshit lies!

  • ummm okay...FAIL

  • What the fuck is this shit? This is NOT debate.

  • this is fucking ridiculous. It's almost as frightening as those weird spelling bee kids.

  • Great video! NorthWestern is a great school with great teaching concepts!

  • Go Public Forum debate! This Policy stuff is terrible

  • this is just ridiculous. you won't win any rational argument in a public debate just by speaking faster and bringing up more (stupid) arguments than your opponent.

  • Yep, you need logical backups and facts lol. This school is just teaching the art of Rhetoric than just debating to find the truth.

  • im going to make a video guide sometime on how to deal with fanboys of popular youtubers insulted

  • arguements are the source of all the worlds problems.

  • arguments occur BECAUSE of the world's problems...

  • I agree!

  • The purpose of their speed reading is to fit in as many words as possible into the smallest time frame. Even if it means talking over their opponent in the process.

It's all quantity over quality. It's purpose is for television.

I imagine many of these students envision themselves as having a future in broadcast journalism where most, if not all of them, will sell their skills to the highest bidder regardless of any personal convictions.

  • Can we point out her grammar at 2:40

  • awesome, training to be politicians. intimidating your opponent so they cant answer! even if your opponent is actually right, bringing out the truth doesnt matter, winning is all that matters!

  • Speaking that fast is not a strategy.

  • losers!

  • Loud, obsessive, blathering,.......a.k.a. filibustering. Bill O'Reilly does this every night.

  • I watch Bill and every other big "News" program... and he does not talk like this at all. This is just stupid shizzz.

  • The comment referred more to the volume and talking over each other.

  • Thats fucking dumb, just record yourself on tape and play it in fast foward.

  • I don't understand why they keep showing these clips of speed reading every time they show high school debate programs. It's like the C++ programming portion of FBLA events, right...because every great leader and/or CEO should know how to program C++. Speed reading is annoying as hell; unless you stutter or have some kind of speech impediment, training for it seems pointless in real life. I don't see number theorists and cryptographers trying to recite prime numbers as fast as they could...

  • who wants to debate that you are all a bunch of losers?

  • Wow, great way to end the video, show two people shouting over eachother - great debate! Let's just shake our baby rattles and throw tantrums while we're at it. I much prefer an organized debate where you can hear one person's thoughts at a time without cutting off another person's flow of argument.

  • @ 5:53 "Public speaking is one of those things that you just can't get by without"

Yeah, you definitely won't get by in the public speaking arena when you speak that fast, it goes against the idea of speaking clearly and phrasing your words with tone. But I know this kind of speed training in speech will help you get a job as an auctioneer.

  • @ 2:36 "that I never thought I would ever knew"

It's "that I never thought I would ever know"

    go debate your grammar

  • That speed debateing is the dumbest god damn thing I have ever seen. I understand the point it is done. Buut should not debating prepare our young for the real world? This is so stupid. No one in the business world or politcs does this. Instead of making 10,000 points that no one understands make 10 points that everyone understands and win at it

  • Fantastic!! But if you could get a woman to STOP talking, that would be amazing.

  • this is gayness!

  • i think they should just not be given any info and see who can BS the best. Because in the long run, thats all that really matters

  • Thought this was about masterbating!!!

  • perm do the alt :D

  • I am a former speech & debate coach and this is my opinion. The ONLY part of the debate in the video that is TRUE debate is the cross-examining (questioning) part. The Speed reading is NOT debate. Debate is using oral communication and reasoning to present an argument in an understandable fashion. The debate presentation is crap.

  • This is fail.

  • yeah debate is too traditional

    flowing, spreading, taglines, "cut" evidence

its all the same, every time

  • that's bull.

just talking fast so your opponent cannot react to it is not good reasoning.

  • definitely debatable

  • I do PF debate, which doesn't require you to read like a wounded duck. Seriously, this junk is useless and doesn't allow for productive resolutions.

  • so they're debating to be the winner for... who? cuz I can't get a point they're tryin' to get across.

  • this is...useless. serious debates will always take place at a normal pace. this doesn't expand argumentative skills at all. maybe it teaches you how to take notes when someone is speaking idiotically fast, but that is also pretty useless. and to be honest these kids don't sound that bright

  • Who are you to say its useless... obviously you do not understand the strategy behind debate. Speed is used in ALL good debates. Not at such speeds as these students are using, but it is used none the less. Do no condemn what you do not understand.

  • Tell me that black girl in the beginning who is highlighted in this video, isn't frickin' annoying? Bla, bla, Word, Bla, Bla, Word, Bla, Bla, Word. Good debaters speak fast, but this is just insanity. Maybe it is good debating to you, but not to me. Reading a text at fast speed with a total blank look in your face is likely to make some listeners (such as me) pay less attention.

  • What is up with that fast reading?

Am i missing something, or humans can just keep pushing the level of stupidity and at the same time make it look like something (normal)?

  • Nortwestern sucks; Northwestern is the university that employed a professor--and probably still does--who believes that the Holocaust never happened. What a joke of a school.

  • Oh my God, these people are frickin' dumb. That black girl in the beginning is extremely annoying. I don't get this.

  • at CantBlockProxies: yeah because one professor represents the whole school.

Anyways, I feel like S&D isn't even about debate anymore, sounds like its becoming a speed talking contest. I don't think speed reading will help a lawyer.

  • I love debate, but the best argument can almost never win (Anarchy):

Stop manipulating the market, and forcing consumers, robbing citizens, and let the free-market take care of it.

Let power companies sell their electricity with the fact that it is clean. Let polluting companies get nailed by law-suits.

Forcing tax-payers to pay a supposedly 'clean' power company has the problem of how it could be standardized and that it ignores all market forces.

(not to mention GW criticisms...: see wiki)

  • wtf?!?!

i hate it when people talk fast

  • Audio is clipping like crazy!

  • im a master debater

  • Sorry, this is off-topic but I made a video called "One World...",watch it if your interested and tell me what you think.

    Trying to make a difference...

  • view my vids they are pretty chill

if you want you can watch them even i will let you and its free

  • Debating must be done on a mass level or not at all!

  • :D how about some meditation ?

  • Nortwestern sucks; Northwestern is the university that employed a professor--and probably still does--who believes that the Holocaust never happened. What a joke of a school.

  • so.

  • This makes no meaningful sense of winning debates. All they do is spout facts that support some sort of idea but doesn't necessarily persuade anyone.

  • cassandra's mustache is hot

  • Northwestern sucks. Didn't a kid get lost and/or die on their campus this year?

  • Say what! That&TBPSQUOs hot. haha. Some video you got there looks cool. Keep up the good work here!

  • I hope you don't plan on being a lawyers cause I don't know what the hell any of them were saying. Then again its not HARVARD or YALE.
