Brazil did get off oil for their own use, they still have oils rigs out there which they sell to countries like hmm idk USA? ring any bells...thought so, bill maher is more smarter than you think he is.
he was not proven wrong. GEORGE WILL assumed he ment they were totally off the need for oil. what MAHER ment was they are active in their commitment since the 70'a at being non-dependent on oil. i think that should be the U.S. goal. CARTER attempted to push this in the 70's but after REAGAN came to power that was never an ambition of the conservatives.
Brazil is 9th in the world in terms of oil production, and 6th in the world in terms of ENERGY (not oil) consumption. However, they are ranked 104th in the world in terms of per capita OIL consumption. They actually do get quite a bit of their energy from sugar cane ethanol.
Bill Maher and Al Sharpton??? Was this show on at 3:00 AM ?? Who would seriously listen to those two idiots. I remember Bill Maher yelling at Ron Paul because he thought that the VA was a privately run health care firm that was treating wounded soldiers poorly. Ron Paul politely asked "What is it that makes you think the VA is not government health care??" Between that and the Tawana Brawley hoax, ABC news should be ashamed of themselves.
@colinthomashoare The part where he said "Brazil got off oil." Brazil is in the top 5 in the world in oil consumption and George Will called him out. Do you understand now?
Am I missing something? Brazil DID uncover a lot of oil off of their coast, but do they not use Ethanol more than oil? I remember from my Natural Resources class in college that they did, but that was in 2006/7...
@willissippi From 2001 through 2010, with the only exception being 2009, Brazilians have used more gasoline than ethanol. Do a google search and you'll get a reuters link which you will find interesting. Mr. Maher has a very dangerous combination of "talents"; an ascerbic wit which is unfortunately linked with an enormous ego, arrogance and unfornately for him, a deficiency in intellect (or in colloquial terms, his nowhere near as smart as he thinks he is."
@mclamag914 So this Reuters articles states: "An increase in ethanol prices in 2011/12 should lead to higher consumption of gasoline and lower consumption of hydrous ethanol," Datagro's President Plinio Nastari said." So if that is for 2011/2012, and this video dates to May of 2010, Maher wasn't incorrect. The same research paper I did in college however, pointed to the fact that sugarcane ethanol production had other effects on the environment, deforestation being one...
@willissippi I was actually referring to an article with a graph depicting comparative usage from 2000-2010 as this was directly relevent to the discussion in the video. I did note the article you reference and found it interesting as there is a strong corollary to what is going on in our country as we have tried to shift towards higher ethanol consumption. In our case we're seeing higher food prices due to the shift in production of corn from feed to fuel. Thanks for the response!
Who are all these people that don't like Bill Maher? I'm guessing they must be the exact opposites of myself. I don't like mormons, I don't like Mitt Romney, and I do think americans are stupid, all these people that don't like him, are they all of the above?
@paulism1984 I agree. You and Mr. Maher are proof that "americans" (apparently not a country anymore) are stupid. You both think take comedians have insightful information about economics and foreign-policy.
Oh, by the way, please don't quote Will Rogers. I understand lefties very much enjoy his "politicians and comedians" quote (in spite of the fact that it should logically destroy their entire ideology).
@MacWillyFortunes Thanks for the serious response. I see what the issue is. It's because they're comedians that we shouldn't take their insight seriously. Haven't you seen that in life in general people use humor and jokes to say real things? The smartest people I know are very funny too. If you're quickest reaction is to call me stupid then I wonder even more about the people that don't like Bill Maher. What do you even mean that I'm a lefty, why am I in a group now?
@paulism1984 I understand there can be truth behind jokes...about the joke-teller's opinion. Maher's jokes are never about policies, they're about how Sarah Palin is retarded, or her son is retarded, or Rush Limbaugh is fat. There is nothing sophisticated or even political about his humor. He just makes fun of people associated with politics. This is because he knows nothing more about economics than the average American...
You're in a group because you put everyone else in one...
@MacWillyFortunes Nothing sophisticated? Did you hear what he was saying about the people who claim to be christians in this country? or the people's secret love for socialism? I think you're simplifying and discrediting way too much. Something is not right in this country and whatever that may be, it wont be the mainstream media that will point that out. Bill Maher points these things out and people like him for it. BTW, some prominent economists don't know about the economy.
The point Maher is trying to make is where is the other options. Brazil does still use oil yes, however they make moves to better their country with alternative fueling methods. As does the USA but not like Brazil. Sugarcane Ethanol is used for their cars more so over both our countries alternative fuel Ethanol. We need better solutions to our problems at home.
@TalkistReal Not that I agree with Maher, but sugarcane is plentiful in Brazil. They've built huge drilling platforms, and interestingly enough several big liberals like George Soros have invested in their oil exploration. We need to end programs like farm subsidies and grow so much we have plenty for food and fuel. You can use grass for diesel, but it isn't much cheaper. We need to drill and research our way out of this it doesn't need to be one or the other.
You guys are hilarious. Bill Clinton and the dems forced the banks to lend to people who could not afford to by the houses. Look it up you poor guys. And why all the animosity? I don’t hate anybody, I just hate the way most people think. I want this country to be the very best. We are and were founded on Judeo- Christian ethics. And that is how we became the strongest country on the planet in the shortest time ever. %)
Ehhh, this looked more like he wasn't sure about it. "I believe.." was thrown around by him when he talked about Brazil's sugar ethanol comments and it doesn't strike me as Coulter'ing a debate.
Maher is technically wrong but in fact Brazil has made great strides to reduce their own consumption, especially compared to the USA (i.e., their produce and export a lot of ethanol, and more than half of their cars are flex fuel vs 3% of ours) ... yet they are as Will pointed out, by no means OFF oil. Track anyone long enough and you'll find things they say which are incorrect - Maher is only human - I'm sure Will has made questionable comments in past which weren't exactly factually correct.
Stupid bill trying to talk smart ... funny people stay in your cages..don't try to be smart..it is scary out there for you ...u r gonna get ur ass kicked ...these people are not ur usual audience who laugh at anyting u say ..
bill maher is just riding the money train as the "leader" or "spokesperson" or "celebrity" of the atheists. he was raised catholic and probably got molested by someone in that setting, so now he's mad at God. as a matter of fact, most people whom claim to be atheists are really people whom believe but are just mad at God.
There are no light vehicles (cars) that run on gasoline in Brazil, but the country still burns gas and diesel in bigger vehicles. Maher is essentially correct.
@lorax2013 Bill didn't slip up, he's just a plain stooge. Obama FINANCED Brazil's continued efforts in offshore drilling. Your comment was posted within the last 24 hours. Bill obviously didn't know this little fact due to the timeline. What's your excuse? Why deflect to George Will with an irrelevant question? Do yourself a favor and don't engage in an argument in public if these are your tactics.
@IMurderdTheDevil No, actually bill is all the way wrong. He was trying to feed us some bullshit to claim the absolute that brazil is off fossil fuels and we should follow their lead. Are we also forgetting that Obama financed brazil to conduct more offshore drilling? Ethanol is crap anyway as we all know. BTW you spelled murdered wrong.
OK so Bill slipped up on a fact, Brazil didn't entirely get off oil, only partially. George Will chose to distract from the main issue by picking on this minor point. To reiterate, Bill's main point was that both US parties and their leaders are sold out to unethical financial interests. Why not address that George? .... crickets.....
@MagatsutheCalamity Oh look, an atheist who bitches about religious people attacking them, attacking religious people over something that had absolutely nothing to do with religion when the religious people didn't even attempt to bring up anything religious what so ever.
@walldodger1969 We don't want to. First, there in no way for the present fat cats to create a monopoly on wind and become fabulously wealthy. Second, no one wants to live near those obnoxious things.
Brazil's energy demand is only a small fraction of America's. Even if the US converted 100% of the bio mass available every year into fuel, it would barely meet one tenth of total energy demand.
@DaxmaPrime JOIN THE CLUB BUDDY. I really don't get his point, is he saying that if the two opposing parties agree on something, that's bad, that even when there's total agreement there should be someone fomenting discent just for the hell of it. That's sure what it sounds like. He sounds like a guy who;s trying to hold onto his TV show at all cost.
@MacWillyFortunes pwned and wrong. just a huge spout of clever misinformation for obama sheeple. that's all this guy is and ever will be. he's a comedian when you boil it down.
@bryanraleigh2 Yeah, but it wasn't really central to his argument, just an example. I don't like Maher, but he was just out of his element here. As you said, he is just a comedian and here he has to deal with people who actually know things rather than his usual panel of celebrity-buddies who agree with everything he says.
Although...if any Republican made this mistake, Maher would be frothing at the mouth with excitement...
@m0rbusPolytox I'm sure he wished he said that afterward. I like Bill Maher and I wish fellow liberals would avoid getting caught in what looks like exaggerations.
George Will is right. Most service stations in Brazil offer a mixture of 80% Gas and 20% Sugar Cane Ethanol. Bill Maher misspoke. I agree that more needs to be done in terms of research into alternative fuels and we have to wean ourselves off of oil but it's a long tedius process. Maher is right that neither party does a good job of representing the left on these issues.
How is Bill Maher getting owned? At best he made a somewhat inaccurate comment that was politely corrected. Nobody got owned here except the guy who uploaded this video.
@VegitoVai90 some what of an inaccurate comment? He said they got off oil. That is significant. Bill Maher is completely ignorant for making that comment. What country just gets off oil when have an abundance of it?
Geeez...what is that thing hanging from the the middle of mayer's face? A trunk? That nasal flap is enormous. When mayer puts his head back, he looks like a frickin two car garage. Can a nose get any bigger?
Bill Maher is indeed funny as hell. Just as Joy Behar? is. But, oh so wrong. Bow and kiss the ass of the almighty President. Become the puppet. Damn, just thought of something. If we had done that to the King, we wouldn t be AMERICA.
@cya4555 He is great at making shit up about the right and then being one of the very loudmouths you proclaim he outs. Please, the guy is a fucking fool.
@MultiMrfalcon You should look in the mirror, before you call anybody a fool. the fact that he's not right 100% of the time, doesn't take away from him being right 98% of the time!!
@cya4555 Your ass sucks wind. The fact that you think that that liberal dumbshit is right 98% of the time makes you a bigger fucking idiot then maher. That would make your IQ around the mentally challenged. Or a libtard.
@cya4555 On the positive side, Obama has done more than any president to push energy efficiency and renewable energy. Those are important resources despite the calamity with Solyndra.
The Brazilian use of oil on a per capita basis adjusted for the relative strengths of the 2 economies show exactly what Maher says: they use less oil and are more self sufficient from oil that the US. Moreover, it is also true that the US could have gone down this road, but declined.
So while Maher usually comes across as a smug know it all jackass, in this particular case, he is right.
George Will is Maher's conservative evil twin. Idiots both. Zero ownage.
@pine829 George Will won on a technicality because yes, Brazil still burns a lot of oil. But Maher wins the bigger point that Brazil had the resolve to do something big about its oil dependency.
@PoetryHound They solved it OK. They are doing off shore drilling for our country because our ignorant president wants us dependent on other countries oil.
@MultiMrfalcon The irony is that the U.S. imports a lot of oil from Venezuela, which is supposedly an enemy (Well, Chavez is), while it slaps a $.54/gallon import tariff on ethanol from Brazil, which is supposedly a friend. Go figure.
The import tariff protects the Iowa corn growers, who make ethanol from corn, which is much less efficient and more costly than the sugarcane-based ethanol from Brazil. So U.S. drivers end up paying more for ethanol than they need to.
@PoetryHound Welcome to the energy plan of a community organizer and progressive leftist. This is what we get for voting in a person who never ran a lemonade stand let alone anything important.
@MultiMrfalcon You're absolutely right, although Bush II, Clinton, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, and Nixon weren't any better. Energy is something presidents like to talk about but not do anything about. Thirty-eight years after the Arab oil embargo, the U.S. is still way too dependent on oil, especially imported oil.
@MultiMrfalcon Not that Obama isn't everything you say, but his policy is exactly the same as the Presidents that proceeded him.
The fact is that if you added the cost of all the wars we've recently waged for the control of the Middle Eastern oil through the trillions we've spent directly or the destruction of our currency through the 10 trillion in debt we've piled on since Gulf War 1, the real cost of gasoline is over $15/gallon
@pine829 So, then maybe drilling on our own property would not be such a bad idea after all. The energy plan that Obama has now, if you can figure out what it is, is a total loser.
@MultiMrfalcon The business interests that control our oil policy (and government) are not served by either domestic or cheap oil. These wars are a fantastically profitable business. Once you accept this, US military and oil policy makes perfect sense.
Obama has not changed the Bush military, foreign or oil policy in any way.
The wars are not for our own oil, they are so that we can control both the price (profit/money) and who gets it (political and economic power)
@pine829 That was deep. So if I understand you correctly, Obama is letting the military control the price of oil? And the military controls who gets gas and who does not and it is political? Did I understand you right?
One, war increases the profitability of oil by creating the fear of scarcity without actual disruption in supply. Two, control of this oil supply by occupying the oil fields either through direct occupation (Iraq) or by propping up dictators (Iran in the past, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq/Saddam, et al) or by controlling trade routes (Iraq, Afghanistan) are powerful economic weapons (cont.)
For example if the US was successful in occupying Iran is would then control virtually every oil field in the Middle East, occupy every trade route to Western Europe, China and India. An incredible political weapon.
The US government is largely controlled by corporate interests. The wars prosecuted by the government result in a huge profits from oil, war materials, war reconstruction and private security.
Thus there is every incentive to go to war - money and power.
@pine829 So, according to your theory, the US controls the majority of the oil around the world. So, the middle east is actually controlled by our very government including Obama. So if it all about oil and power, then why do we not drill our own oil that sits below our propoerty. I mean, that would give us even more power over the world, wouldn't it? Oh, what oil fields do we currently occupy?
@pine829 Its a good thing the US did not go down this road in one sense. Brazil is eliminating rain forest at a hight rate to produce the ethanol they need. So, while they did work on being independent their solution was far from ideal. Maher may be correct that they are less dependent but doesn't take into account the associated negative impacts that offset the gains from that independence.
@woodsmanlw There are two issues here, first is the notion that the US wants oil independence, which it clearly does not. There is way too much money to be made in the situation we're in. Second is the notion that ethanol requires corn growing which it does not. The most efficient plant to create biomass is hemp and if you look at history, it was this fact that caused marijuana to become illegal in the US and why those laws include hemp. They were written by oil companies.
@thepopekiller Maher stated complete horseshit about Brasil's oil consumption---which was completely false and only was uttered to further his point of view.
I wouldn't call that a "belief". Thats called a blatant misrepresentation.
Where's the trans-american pipeline damn-it?! 3 pros: Creates jobs, Makes oil cheaper, and lowers dependence on foreign countries. 1 con: kills some environment.
@m0rbusPolytox Talk about a slanted. 1.) Less than 2000 jobs my ass, do you understand how long the pipeline will be? 50,000 jobs that year, and 250,000 permanent jobs and more than $100 billion in annual total expenditures. (that fact alone out weighs all of your cons)
2.) True, already said.
3.) What?
4.) Oh yeah, but they will be paid in full.
5.) Doesn't matter. Oil spills are easily cleanable on land.
6.) Sustainability
7.) Dependance shifts to allies, less on Mid East.
Bill Maher's biggest problem is that he thinks because he has a show on HBO, he thinks he is witty and funny, he is a leftist, he believes he is intellectual. He actually is dumb as a rock. Now I don't like Jon Stewart but a tleast I believe that Stewart has some brains. Maher farts at the mouth and then cowers when proven wrong. The next episode of Real Time Maher cried like a girl and attacked Will personally.
Brazil never got off oil, as Will said. Maher can talk out of his backside at times. But Brazil is ahead of us in adopting new and renewable energy technologies and reaping benefits from it.
Bill Maher needs to just shut up. Obama just lost thousands of jobs. Just from the decision not to run the pipe line and drill. LOL Now China is joining Canada in this. Lets see China jobs in our water, through our land. Yup more decisions of liberal views. Obama says Americans aren't good enough,or save enough workers to do the jobs. MM, China is going to care if they spill oil in our waters and land. Obama cares less about America and Americans. What a failure this man is. Obama is a joke.
@cya4555 Thats right I'm the joke, because you liberals don't want jobs. Liberals just want to steal money by taxing the wealthy. Obama and the liberals are the joke. We need to drill.
Have any of you jokers who are arguing about this bothered to look it up to see who's right? Just because Will said "I THINK that they still burn a lot of oil" doesn't make it true and definitely doesn't make it an OWN.
@pureevilfnord It is an own, Brazil is one of the most rapidly industrializing nations, to think they are doing so by using sugar cane is completely insulting to this YouTube audience.
brazil is not completely off oil but they need way less then most countries, almost every car in brazil runs off alchool from sugar cane that is incredible when you realise there are 200 million people in brazil, brazil drills oil, for sure but it is mostly for selling, energy comes from hydroelectric dams as there are many rivers. so in the sense of being free from oil they are ahead of most.
If you call revealing to someone that they're wrong in front of their face being owned, then Bill got owned. Brazil is not completely "off oil" and they're only able to partially rely on ethanol because of their mostly arable landscape.
I just wrote on a another post how some people are so desperate to say, "I'm right!"... and protect their identity (which they put into things like "Christianity" or "Atheism")... they "claim victories" on really immature levels... and pull debate and discussion into the same levels to find and relish those "victories".. instead of actually talking about the subjects.
@jakesandersonaudio he made a completely absurd and inaccurate statement. unlike his show where he can say whatever he wants without consequence, he was actually challenged and his lie was exposed. he looked like a complete and utter partisan idiot. hence the title "owned"
@latinasdoitbetter1 it's not a lie, unless he knew what he was saying was wrong and so was trying to deceive everyone. Which is clearly not the case, he was only mistaken.
I appreciate the way you wrote your response. He did indeed make a "completely absurd and inaccurate statement".. but it was hardly a lie..the way you jump on that like this, "his lie was exposed. he looked like a complete and utter partisan idiot."... it's like WHOA! lol too far... it clearly wasn't a lie, he just needs to do his research on that area, as you said, it was an absurd statement... but he clearly wasn't "owned" for "his lies being exposed"
that is what you call owned? How childish! a few words about oil offshore? get real idiot! Almost all of Brazil is run on sugar cane filed fuel! has been for years.
Brazil did get off oil for their own use, they still have oils rigs out there which they sell to countries like hmm idk USA? ring any bells...thought so, bill maher is more smarter than you think he is.

Do yourself a favor and don't engage in an argument in public if these are your tactics.

Maher is right that neither party does a good job of representing the left on these issues.
hot4vegas 1 week ago
@hot4vegas you are partially right: brazilian gast-stations may only sell gas, that contains AT LEAST 25% of ethanol!
but there's many small cars on the roads, who need mixtures with even more ethanol and some even drive off 100% ethanol.
also, what i think Maher tried to say here was, that Brazil isn't dependent on oil as much, as most other countries are

Zero ownage.
pine829 1 week ago
@pine829 George Will won on a technicality because yes, Brazil still burns a lot of oil. But Maher wins the bigger point that Brazil had the resolve to do something big about its oil dependency.
PoetryHound 1 week ago
@PoetryHound They solved it OK. They are doing off shore drilling for our country because our ignorant president wants us dependent on other countries oil.
MultiMrfalcon 1 week ago

MultiMrfalcon 1 week ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@MultiMrfalcon You're absolutely right, although Bush II, Clinton, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, and Nixon weren't any better. Energy is something presidents like to talk about but not do anything about. Thirty-eight years after the Arab oil embargo, the U.S. is still way too dependent on oil, especially imported oil.
thx1138aa 1 week ago
@MultiMrfalcon Not that Obama isn't everything you say, but his policy is exactly the same as the Presidents that proceeded him.
The fact is that if you added the cost of all the wars we've recently waged for the control of the Middle Eastern oil through the trillions we've spent directly or the destruction of our currency through the 10 trillion in debt we've piled on since Gulf War 1, the real cost of gasoline is over $15/gallon
pine829 5 days ago
@pine829 So, then maybe drilling on our own property would not be such a bad idea after all. The energy plan that Obama has now, if you can figure out what it is, is a total loser.
MultiMrfalcon 5 days ago
@MultiMrfalcon The business interests that control our oil policy (and government) are not served by either domestic or cheap oil. These wars are a fantastically profitable business. Once you accept this, US military and oil policy makes perfect sense.
Obama has not changed the Bush military, foreign or oil policy in any way.
The wars are not for our own oil, they are so that we can control both the price (profit/money) and who gets it (political and economic power)
pine829 5 days ago
@pine829 That was deep. So if I understand you correctly, Obama is letting the military control the price of oil? And the military controls who gets gas and who does not and it is political? Did I understand you right?
MultiMrfalcon 5 days ago
@MultiMrfalcon No, you did not understand it correctly
Our present wars are about oil
One, war increases the profitability of oil by creating the fear of scarcity without actual disruption in supply. Two, control of this oil supply by occupying the oil fields either through direct occupation (Iraq) or by propping up dictators (Iran in the past, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq/Saddam, et al) or by controlling trade routes (Iraq, Afghanistan) are powerful economic weapons (cont.)
pine829 5 days ago
(cont.)
Thus there is every incentive to go to war - money and power.
pine829 5 days ago
@pine829 So, according to your theory, the US controls the majority of the oil around the world. So, the middle east is actually controlled by our very government including Obama. So if it all about oil and power, then why do we not drill our own oil that sits below our propoerty. I mean, that would give us even more power over the world, wouldn't it? Oh, what oil fields do we currently occupy?
MultiMrfalcon 5 days ago
@pine829 Its a good thing the US did not go down this road in one sense. Brazil is eliminating rain forest at a hight rate to produce the ethanol they need. So, while they did work on being independent their solution was far from ideal. Maher may be correct that they are less dependent but doesn't take into account the associated negative impacts that offset the gains from that independence.
woodsmanlw 1 week ago
@woodsmanlw There are two issues here, first is the notion that the US wants oil independence, which it clearly does not. There is way too much money to be made in the situation we're in. Second is the notion that ethanol requires corn growing which it does not. The most efficient plant to create biomass is hemp and if you look at history, it was this fact that caused marijuana to become illegal in the US and why those laws include hemp. They were written by oil companies.

4) expropriation of private land
5) very high risk of oil spills and similar desasters
6) does NOT make oil cheaper, not even sure todays prices could be sustained
7) dependence on foreign countries, as ever - only now Canada joins the arabs
see, destroyed your pros and delivered 4 more CONS

2.) True, already said.
3.) What?
4.) Oh yeah, but they will be paid in full.
5.) Doesn't matter. Oil spills are easily cleanable on land.
6.) Sustainability
7.) Dependance shifts to allies, less on Mid East.
