I hadn't started watching "The Carol Burnett Show" yet in 1967, and if I had seen this number then (at the age of 13) I would've thought it was pretty cheesy.
NOW, of course, I don't even care what they're singing and what they sound like - visually this is such an outstanding '60s pastiche of costumes, go-go boots, hairdos, make-up, AND dance moves that I can't help but venerate every second of it!
Carol and Viki were HOT in this video! I never really equated 'Carol' and 'hot' together in the same sentence before, but I wouldn't have kicked her out of bed in 1967!
When Vicki Lawrence was 18, she had written to Carol Burnett, saying she was a big fan, how much they look alike. Carol asked her come on to her show which this was it and have a contract.
@MPL029 They're making fun of the "intercom voices" in The Beatles' recording of the song, Yellow Submarine. You know the part? (Ringo sings "Every one of us/Has all we need/Sky of blue/And sea of green" etc. and John or Paul speaks back each line over the sub's intercom.) There's a fairly well known film clip from 1964 of a US interviewer asking Ringo, "Are you a Mod or a Rocker?" Ringo replies, "No, I'm a MOCKER." (!!!) Here, 3 years later, Carol & Vicki are mockers! OMG HILARIOUS!
@MPL029 In the version of this song that was very popular by Peter, Paul and Mary they do something very similar. I think that was what they were imitating.
Check your class pictures from back then. One year the teachers are wearing formal business attire and the next they're wearing psychedelic shirts with frilly cuffs and corduroy pants.
You can see the black and white's of the two to the right under suggestions. I can remember my sister and I dancing to this when I was just a wee one, 4-5. I sure wish we had access to a time machine like the Dr.'s Tardis so we could travel back and forth to these happy moments in our lives that we miss so much. Good times!
Does anyone have the clip of the show where Vicki does a strip tease behind someone (Tim Conway?) doing a bad magic act? She strips and the audience goes wild and the magic man thinks he is a star. ?????
Yes, this was shortly after Carol began her weekly variety show (in September 1967). She tried to be "contemporary", yet always remembered to focus on the same audience her mentor, Garry Moore, did.
I love this video! So much going on...great stuff. As young as Vicki was, there were traces of Thelma Harper in her voice even then. For anybody that was a fan of Mama's Family, you can hear Mama coming out in Vicki's voice if you listen closely around 0:22.
omg amazing! i was only 5 but i watched and remember all these episodes! i remember the first one too, when carol read a letter written by vicki and then called vicki up on the stage!
how i would love to meet carol and vicki! this was the best of television at that time!
IS there anything the folks on this show coudlnt do? I would like to see most of today's TV stars even attempt this type versatility and pull it off. THis was such a send up of the 60's.. very clever material. Gotta love old variety shows and Carol's was the best.
this is really a fab number-sums up the feel and sense of the late 60s in one song--you can just about feel and be there with this vibe--what a pity it didnt continue on to what it was supposed to be, the good times !--and we all sold out to the greedy ones.and giant corps..thanx for posting
I grew up watching this show with my grandma and we used to laugh ourselves silly. As I got older I realized how much ground breaking Carol did on tv as a comedienne. AND as a dramatic actress, she got a Golden Globe nomination as best actress for the film "The Life of the Party", a true story. I'm posting for other fans in L.A. who might want a chance to see her in person, she's hosting and will do a Q&A after.
Go to friendly House LA (dot) o r g to see an invite.
I think it is a shame that while their comedic genius was always readily acknowledged, rarely if ever was it pointed out they were really beautiful ladies as well.
Actually, Vicki Lawrence wrote to Carol Burnett saying how much they looked alike and it landed her a job on the Carol Burnett show. How cool is that?
Actually it was Peter, Paul and Mary who MENTION the Mamas and Papas in the song lyrics. This song was written by (among others) Noel Paul Stookey, 'Paul' of PP&M.
I was a kid in the 60's and is this the era I remember. The "revolutionary 60's" represented in the media in no way represents how most of us lived. I remember the way iwas. I still remember cheering and waving when my dad came home from vietnam. He was a hero, plus he brought me cool stuff. (He didn't spend his whole time killing the godless commies") I remember the Jackson 5, The Osmonds, Andy Williams, Glenn Cambell, Flip Wilson, Laugh In, The Carol Burnett Show. That was my 60's...Love this!
That's ironic because much of the commercial fluff that was on television at the time didn't represent life as many others were living it in the 60s. I think it's great that we can look back and see the two sides now for what they really were. Oh, except Vietnam. Oops.
Great to see this again after all these years. I always thought the musical numbers on Carol's show were superb, especially her duets with Vicki and with her musical guests. Too bad they cut all them out for syndication.
i miss them too........ the best of the best always! this clip was great! i really love carol burnett. i will never forget the first episode where carol reads a letter written by vicki and calls her up on the stage. it was amazing. i was heavily influenced by what i saw on tv. i was only 5 and these memories are still in my head! they are wonderful!
@SomebodyGroovy2 LOL! I watched this a million times and never saw that until you pointed it out! LOL! "go-go boot wipeout" is my new favorite phrase!
I can't help but laugh when I watch Carol because she has these facial expressions that are just hilarious. They both actually look GREAT as Go Go girls! Love the harmonizing, too. :)
OK, now that I've watched this a dozen times, I'm wondering... Was this a TV special or part of an early Carol Burnett show? And are any or all of those costumes Mackey rags?
