  • I hadn't started watching "The Carol Burnett Show" yet in 1967, and if I had seen this number then (at the age of 13) I would've thought it was pretty cheesy.

NOW, of course, I don't even care what they're singing and what they sound like - visually this is such an outstanding '60s pastiche of costumes, go-go boots, hairdos, make-up, AND dance moves that I can't help but venerate every second of it!

  • Great hair!

  • Didn't know Vicki could go-go like she did! Pretty groovy bird.

  • @rdash2you11

Ain't she cool as hell? Carol was pretty hot too.

  • Carol and Vicki are smokin' in this...miss the shows were true talent entertained the masses.

  • When the old variety shows tried to be hip and current, it was so entertainingly uncomfortable to watch.

  • @mofosoandso - interesting how different people see things different ways... to me it's just fun... nothing more, nothing less!

  • they looked like they really could be sisters.

  • Hard to find performers so versatile they can pull off this number and Mama's family.

  • in groovy color..loved it..i wish i had a pair of those vinyl boots:D

  • Carol and Viki were HOT in this video! I never really equated 'Carol' and 'hot' together in the same sentence before, but I wouldn't have kicked her out of bed in 1967!

  • That was really out of sight!! Love it!!!

  • why cant women look this good now? im 27 i think women back in the 60's was hot!

  • It's hard to believe that Viki was only about 17 there.

  • I love Vicki's dance solo - she was fantastic!

  • When Vicki Lawrence was 18, she had written to Carol Burnett, saying she was a big fan, how much they look alike. Carol asked her come on to her show which this was it and have a contract.

  • Wow. Carol was almost twice Vicky's age here, and she looked great next to Vicky. They could pass as sisters.

  • LOVE those vinyl black BOOTS!!!!!

  • @FOSEEBOY They had some good and groovy clothing back then compared to the crap we have today. Oh well...

  • I just loved that!! Groovy!!

    Tym

  • what are Carol and Vicki mocking/imitating with their voices at 2:07-2:12? anyone know?

  • @MPL029 They're making fun of the "intercom voices" in The Beatles' recording of the song, Yellow Submarine. You know the part? (Ringo sings "Every one of us/Has all we need/Sky of blue/And sea of green" etc. and John or Paul speaks back each line over the sub's intercom.) There's a fairly well known film clip from 1964 of a US interviewer asking Ringo, "Are you a Mod or a Rocker?" Ringo replies, "No, I'm a MOCKER." (!!!) Here, 3 years later, Carol & Vicki are mockers! OMG HILARIOUS!

  • @gabeester thats very interesting...and yes I know exactly what youre referring to..thank you for letting me know!

  • @MPL029 In the version of this song that was very popular by Peter, Paul and Mary they do something very similar. I think that was what they were imitating.

  • Check your class pictures from back then. One year the teachers are wearing formal business attire and the next they're wearing psychedelic shirts with frilly cuffs and corduroy pants.

  • as much as i think carol has looked gorgeous all the time especially now, i really think she looked best in 1967.

  • Wow, Carol and Vicki did awesome on this! And they even mentioned the Mama and the Papas, one of my favorite 60's groups!

  • Thanks for a better version. I love this dance sequence but only seen it in a grainy b&w version.

  • You can see the black and white's of the two to the right under suggestions. I can remember my sister and I dancing to this when I was just a wee one, 4-5. I sure wish we had access to a time machine like the Dr.'s Tardis so we could travel back and forth to these happy moments in our lives that we miss so much. Good times!

  • It seems the 60s were more hip than even the 70s.

  • Fabulous!!!

  • oct 67 aye...this is cool....

  • Groovy! Totally dig it!

  • How did I get here...I was watching Ernie Kovacs clips.

  • 2:57. AHHHHHHH HAHAHAHA

  • this clip is really groovy man, love those mini dress , far out

  • this clip is really groovy man, love those mini dress

  • that was cool.

  • Does anyone have the clip of the show where Vicki does a strip tease behind someone (Tim Conway?) doing a bad magic act? She strips and the audience goes wild and the magic man thinks he is a star. ?????

  • That was one of the hippest clips I've ever seen period! Take a bow ladies :-)

  • dig those crazy steps!

  • Carol was 34 years old here.

  • can I get some crackers to go with all this delicious cheese?

  • How old is Carol here? Because she looks damn good next to a 19 year old Vicki

  • Yes, this was shortly after Carol began her weekly variety show (in September 1967). She tried to be "contemporary", yet always remembered to focus on the same audience her mentor, Garry Moore, did.

  • Check out the legs on these gals! Ouite short for '67! Can't believe it still took 3 years to get to the micro!

  • Vicky was HOT

  • Their harmony part actually sounds really good. They camped up the rest but that part of the song sounded pretty legit.

  • is there anyways I can get this video??

  • I love this video! So much going on...great stuff. As young as Vicki was, there were traces of Thelma Harper in her voice even then. For anybody that was a fan of Mama's Family, you can hear Mama coming out in Vicki's voice if you listen closely around 0:22.

  • yes, real mccoy, '67 -they're even have V.Sassoon haircut from that mary's baby movie -which i think is also '67

  • omg amazing! i was only 5 but i watched and remember all these episodes! i remember the first one too, when carol read a letter written by vicki and then called vicki up on the stage!

how i would love to meet carol and vicki! this was the best of television at that time!

  • wow, totally groovy! how old is this clip, do you know?

  • @kimberloola - October 1967

  • IS there anything the folks on this show coudlnt do? I would like to see most of today's TV stars even attempt this type versatility and pull it off. THis was such a send up of the 60's.. very clever material. Gotta love old variety shows and Carol's was the best.

  • This is awesome beyond words...I've never seen it before....they both look great.

  • absolutely love theyre mod mini dresses :}

  • this is really a fab number-sums up the feel and sense of the late 60s in one song--you can just about feel and be there with this vibe--what a pity it didnt continue on to what it was supposed to be, the good times !--and we all sold out to the greedy ones.and giant corps..thanx for posting

  • Wow, Vicki Lawrence really grooves when she dances! I love that little shuffle she does at :38 to change places with Carol...

  • I grew up watching this show with my grandma and we used to laugh ourselves silly. As I got older I realized how much ground breaking Carol did on tv as a comedienne. AND as a dramatic actress, she got a Golden Globe nomination as best actress for the film "The Life of the Party", a true story. I'm posting for other fans in L.A. who might want a chance to see her in person, she's hosting and will do a Q&A after.

Go to friendly House LA (dot) o r g to see an invite.

  • Yes, ohbutyes is right, I have this tape, this song was out on the charts that same year, made popular by Peter, Paul and Mary.

  • Vicki Lawrence was spunky but kinda tuff and a babe back in her day.

  • Oh, my goodness! I have never seen this! Thanks so much for posting!! Vicki is so cute--she really does look like she could be Carol's kid sister!

  • 1:14 Vicki in the house heeeeyyyyyy

  • The choreography is freaking amazing.

  • These two were really good looking back on those great shows.

  • This is by far the coolest thing I've ever seen on the Carol Burnett show !!!!

  • Love these two! I was just thinking to myself, its Thelma Harper! LOL

  • I think it is a shame that while their comedic genius was always readily acknowledged, rarely if ever was it pointed out they were really beautiful ladies as well.

  • what a groovy video..thanks for posting

  • vidal sasoon hair, bob mackey mod dresses, doing the frug, monkey, jerk and swim! All thats missing are vespa scooters! too cool!

  • there adoupded

  • Miniskirts, boots, short hairdos.......gosh I really miss those days. This is so good!

  • oh g'd help me but I'm getting hot for Carol Burnett :)

  • 60's MOD is my favorite style in dancing, music and clothing! This scene is one of the coolest performances ever on TV...

  • They do look like sisters.

  • Actually, Vicki Lawrence wrote to Carol Burnett saying how much they looked alike and it landed her a job on the Carol Burnett show. How cool is that?

  • I heard that someone saw Vicki Lawrence and told Carol how much she looked like Carol's sister and so she brought her on the show.

  • I heard that she was in the audience one night and asked Carol a question during her Q & A session and that's how she was introduced to the show.

  • She wrote a letter to the show, it's one of the dvd's from the show.

  • somebody forgot to mention this is a peter paul and mary song from around 1968

  • actually it was Mamas and Papas

  • Actually it was Peter, Paul and Mary who MENTION the Mamas and Papas in the song lyrics. This song was written by (among others) Noel Paul Stookey, 'Paul' of PP&M.

  • carol looks so much like liza manelli when she was young here

  • I heard Carol say that the character Mama/Family Skit was around 1973-1974

  • @rhiannon51070 - Near the end of the 1973-74 season, yes.

  • great clip thanks for sharing super funny dance moves very different from how we dance now

  • I was a kid in the 60's and is this the era I remember. The "revolutionary 60's" represented in the media in no way represents how most of us lived. I remember the way iwas. I still remember cheering and waving when my dad came home from vietnam. He was a hero, plus he brought me cool stuff. (He didn't spend his whole time killing the godless commies") I remember the Jackson 5, The Osmonds, Andy Williams, Glenn Cambell, Flip Wilson, Laugh In, The Carol Burnett Show. That was my 60's...Love this!

  • That's ironic because much of the commercial fluff that was on television at the time didn't represent life as many others were living it in the 60s. I think it's great that we can look back and see the two sides now for what they really were. Oh, except Vietnam. Oops.

  • Fabulous performance and oh! Bob Mackie!! HE is so #1

  • looks so Paco Rabanne tho

  • What season did Vicki start playing Mama??

  • I think it was in the later years

  • I love Vicki's dance scene.

  • Great to see this again after all these years. I always thought the musical numbers on Carol's show were superb, especially her duets with Vicki and with her musical guests. Too bad they cut all them out for syndication.

  • freakin awesome outfits... they were the s**t

  • Groovy!

  • i heard that vickie had won a talent contest playing carol. then carol contacted her for the show.

  • Sort of, she sent Carol a letter and a picture saying that the looked so much alike!

I can't believe that they are 16 years in age difference! They get along on the same wavelength

  • Oh, these dresses! LOVE 'EM!!

  • I really dig those crazy 60's dance movies. Swingin'!

  • They're not related. Vicki Lawrence contacted Carol Burnett and said they could play sisters and Carol agreed, the rest is history

  • Are they related inn anyway they look so the same?!

  • I miss variety shows!

  • i miss them too........ the best of the best always! this clip was great! i really love carol burnett. i will never forget the first episode where carol reads a letter written by vicki and calls her up on the stage. it was amazing. i was heavily influenced by what i saw on tv. i was only 5 and these memories are still in my head! they are wonderful!

  • They used to look so much alike. As a kid I really couldnt tell them apart..

  • this tune is going to be runnin through my head for days i dig it

  • Thank you so much for finding the COLOR version of this! I had been looking for a year!

  • This was in the 70s... they're doing a "retro" show on the 60s.

  • It's actually October 1967. Vicki is 18 years old.

  • Never mind...

  • @ohbutyes You're correct. : ) 18 years old? She looks HOT.

  • This is great...we all dressed and wore our hair that way. I love it...thanks for posting.

  • Anybody else notice the go-go boot wipeout that the orange guy on the left does at 3:13?

  • Never noticed it but deeply appreciate you introducing me to the phrase "go-go boot wipeout" - sounds like the unfilmed Frankie and Annette movie!

  • Good eye! That's what you get for being a guy and trying to wear go go boots, LOL! xD

  • Carol and Vicki remind me so much of my mom and aunt...

  • Classic! Love it!

  • carol & sis.....lol.

  • I can't help but laugh when I watch Carol because she has these facial expressions that are just hilarious. They both actually look GREAT as Go Go girls! Love the harmonizing, too. :)

  • and Vicki already channels Mama Harper when she sings the line "it's about the happiest sound goin' down today... "

  • they don't have performances like this anymore!

  • I can almost see Austin Powers in that one it's Great.

  • Carol Burnett show had the best people working with her and the musical numbers were always so wonderful.

  • OK, now that I've watched this a dozen times, I'm wondering... Was this a TV special or part of an early Carol Burnett show? And are any or all of those costumes Mackey rags?

  • Carol Burnett Show #4 - Aired 10/2/67

  • Everything about this is...GROOVY! Love it!! Thanks for posting. :)

  • sorry that was supposed to be a thumbs up
