AMC also kicked ass on the dragstrip. Remember Drag-On-Lady?
I've got a 73 AMX, 304V8, 998 auto, olympic blue with blue interior. Had it for 11 years. Currently fixing it back up to better then it was when it was my daily driver (and gas $1 per gallon).
man i have a 71 Amc hornet that sounds just like that but it set up as a sleeper thats for sure .. love the javlin though my old man had one when he was younger
It realy is too bad AMC got bought out I bet having the name AMERICAN Motor company those things would sell today since everyone in america wants to buy american made things
I love it! The heck with keeping it original, I like what you have done. I once owned a 73 trans-am winner edition. It was stock with a 304 3 speed, but we put a 360 in out of a 71 javelin. Fastest car I ever owned. That car was feared around here back in the day.....
I have a '71 Jav SST with a 304, Holley 600, MDS ignition, mild cam, Black interior with a plum crazy purple exterior, ET and Superior mags from the 70's, rear spoiler etc. 6 yrs in the rebuild. I'm working on a '74 Jav AMX with a 360. I owned a Gremlin with a 304 back in the day. I'm glad that I get to go to cruise nights in the Jav.
@TheAMXFAN AMC won the trans am title 3 times. factory backed teams in 71 and 72 and indepent in 75. AMC got second place in 70 behind the boss 302 mustang.
dont they have an advance mechanism in the distributor?
why run really advanced at low rpm when u can just modify advance curve and have the correct advance at higher rpm or do these engines run best with much advance at low rpm?
depending on your cam timing, some engines need 18-24 degrees of ignition advance to idle properly. Some people will simply lock out the timing because engine load is fairly low with high stall torque converters. for example your full advance should be in at 3500rpm, well if you have a 4000 stall torque converter why not lock out your advance to be in all the way. this does not work too well on street driven vehicles as they will start bucking like crazy at low rpm part throttle.
Beautiful car. Mines a 74 javelin with a 360. Not to fond of your exhaust tips though :P all that beautiful car then rusty pipes? seems like a bit of a waste
I've got a 70 Jav SST, which I think was / is a Donohue. The spoiler in back was stolen prior to my buying it...but for sure....it's a SST. With 360, ram air / beautiful, functional hood scoop, front discs, Hurst 4sp from factory. Remember, those crappy Autolite carbs were what held back most AMC perf. engines from attaining similar power ratings as comparable motors of the size and era. Plus, AMC has some fantastic, big-ass ports in their heads.
AMC. . . Kindof a "runt" in the muscle car family. But definatlly a "unique" brand. I had a 73 Ambassador wagon that was ROTTED out but saved the 401/ TH400. If any of you AMC gearheads want a cool web site to visit and chat and learn from eachother, visit "BOXWRENCH,COM". They have a lot of info and chat on all V8s. However, they need help with the AMC stuff. In paticular the tourque specs and spacifics on tear downs and build ups. ANY info will be great. Alot of cool guys and good tips!
Now,Lets iron out some misconceptions, this appears to be 71(bar tailights with no dividers) AMX(turned interior trim). The factory AMC 360 4V put out a sprightly 285HP gross from the factory. All electric fuel pumps are noisy. and unless you have a mechanical roller cam never push a 360 above 6500...even then spinning cast parts that fast is not a good idea. only the the 390 and 401 received the forged lower ends in the late 60s and 70s.
that's not a 70, it's either a 71 or 72 being a humpster with those particular tail lights. Judging by the end of the video I'd say it's a 71 to be excact. And it's of course a beauty! :)

Love those old javelins
okrabay 2 years ago
they did,but not in javelins, they run the matador cars, between 1973-75
fnm9908 2 years ago
Yes AMC did run in Nascar. Mark Donohue won in a Matador in Riverside (road course) in Jan 73.
Also Bobby Allison won I believe in Charlotte in either 74 or 75.
