  • I love the lesson, but you were going a bit too fast.

But overall a great lesson. 5 STARS

  • @rhinol013 Thanks! Yeah, I know I was going fast but at the time YouTube limited video length to 10 minutes. As it ended up I had about 15 seconds to spare - wish I could say I planned it that way ;->

  • Just my little input, when U play the very first phrase of the solo U end it on the 11th fret of the G string (3rd), I've always found it easier 2 end on the 7th fret of the B string (2nd) because then U hand is better positioned over the B Pentatonic position 4 the fill. Hope that makes sense, if so try it and let me know what U think. Nice vid by the way. :)

  • @Laviathon666 Hey, so I checked out your approach.... Your way does put your hand in the correct position, however the way I am doing it leaves my finger on the sting I am going to play next. Not sure which is better - I think I'm comfortable with my way only because I've played it that way 1,000 times. Thanks for checking out the vid and for the feedback - someone may find your way better for them....

  • Thanks so much for making this vid. It was very helpful!

  • fuckingg beastt dogg!!

  • tll i find the righteous one, computer blue......

  • Super cool! Feel free to post more Prince tutorials :-))

  • thank you for the lesson i was able to learn the accurately and fast. it was this song and performance from the move purple rain that ispired me in the 80's to get a guitar and learn to play. never had the time to learn it note for note, but your lesson is so accurate . to get the sound for this song you basically want a telecaster through a soldano super lead, with a ts9 tube screamer with or without a slight (almost inaudible) delay, or a multi fx pedals equivalent to this.

  • @aaronb7135 Glad to hear it helped - and thanks for the info on how to get an accurate tone for the song. I'll look into picking up a TS9.

  • the thing thats lacking with you is you're playing the song with no feeling and it feels like your missing the key parts to it

  • @liam2005 with regard to lack of feeling - it's a lesson, not a performance. I wanted viewers to be able to see my fingers as best as possible, so I'm trying to hold a good, steady angle.

  • u taught me

  • can you play the third solo? he uses a distortion, cry baby wah, and a flanger

  • another question, do you have really soft or loose strings? even when i'm shoving with the whole force of my hand, my strings won't bend like yours do. what strings do i need to get? mine seem really stiff. (its a beginners guitar... can't really expect it to be great i guess. but i just can't pull off those pulls with it.)

  • @ryoryox Strings are measured by gauge I am using "10's" on this guitar (.010 - .046) which is very typical. The higher the number the thicker the strings. If you are using an electric guitar and cannot bend the string at the 12th fret, you may have tuned your guitar an octave or two too high (which would match with your other question as well). As for technique, use more than 1 finder for support.

What type of guitar do you have / where did you get it?

  • @vman4639 its called a 'first act', basic beginners guitar i assume. i got it at a walmart supersenter around 8 to 10 years ago. i'll PM you a link to a video i just uploaded of it demonstrating the string bend and tuning.

  • @ryoryox When is the last time you changed the strings? Two brands I have used and liked: D'Addario and Ernie Ball. There are lots of good brands, those are just 2 I have tried and liked. Go buy a set of "9's" from a guitar store (not Walmart) and ask if they'll help you put them on / take a look at your neck. I replace my stings every couple of months. Should only cost you $6

  • @vman4639 I changed the strings yesterday, all except for the second string cause i didn't have one.

  • @ryoryox My only other thought is to go to a big guitar store that let's you pull the guitars off the wall (Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc) and try bending / hammering with one of those guitars.

You'll know straight away if it's your guitar or your technique.

  • @ryoryox if your still having this problem go to a guitar shop and look for any strings that say super light gauge but sense you said you have a starter am going to go ahead and guess its a fender so you could ask for just a stander set of fender strat strings unless you need a ball end sense they have bullet ends now

  • hey, I been replaying this video all day tryin' to learn this song, but i came across a tuning problem at the 5 minute mark. third string on 12 and fourth string on 11 don't match the pitch that you're playing. my guitar is currently tuned to the standard (i have a pitch pipe to do that) do i need to change the tuning to something specific or is there something else wrong? also, no matter how loud i have my amp, hammering doesn't work very well

  • @ryoryox I am using standard tuning. I would validate your tuning by comparing each string against each other. Justin Guitar (google 'Justin Guitar') has good videos on this (under The Basics) - look at basic tuning and advanced (using harmonics) tuning.

Your hammering problem is likely technique (not amp). It works just as well on an acoustic guitar. Make sure you are using the tip of your finger near the fret and strike it cleanly with some force. See "Technique" on Justin's site.

  • the end if the sing is the 5th fret not the 6th :).you should do "why you wanna treat me so bad" by prince.

  • @kendpurest Oh - it looks like I am playing it right (5th fret) but saying is wrong. Yeah, that was weird trying to talk through all the string and fret positions while playing the notes.

  • You look like Billy Joel, thats amazing :)

  • watch your timing there sir.

  • @onis Agreed. I commented on the timing in an earlier reply. I'd been playing for about a year when I made the vid and did the best I could. It was tough playing over the original track.

  • i have a question. how do you produce that guitar sound? what pedal should i purchase to dulicate the computer blue guitar sound?? thanks

  • @nhbgracie That's a tough one - I guess the real answer is you never will, you can only get closer. I'd love to be able to produce David Gilmour's tone as well - just never going to happen. But to get you closer - Prince uses Boss pedals and uses the Blues Driver quite a bit (I used that in the vid). Google "Prince Guitar Pedals" the first link (currently) has a nice image of a recent Prince set up. You may want to scoop your tone as well - T&B low, M high - then try the opposite of that.

  • @ImNotSorryInc Thanks - Glad you can play it! I can't take credit for figuring out all the notes - I did get some help from TAB sites (like Ultimate Guitar) - I did spend some time on ~how~ to play the notes (best finger position, timing, and such). Listening back to it, my timing needs some work ;->

  • sweeeet!

  • LOVE IT!!!!

  • merci beaucoup sieur

  • awesome lesson theres a video on my channel playing it its not perfect and you have to turn it way up thanks for the vid

  • Wicked! Computer Blue is one of my all time favorite songs and I especially love that solo. I cant play guitar but it was awesome to watch. :)

  • very nice playin ! 5*

  • Nicely done! I really want to learn "fathers song", which I guess led to this song. But without a sheet, I guess I will have to transcribe it myself.

  • Very very nice work! if u are interested i have a zip file of the linn drum machine u know the one prince used from 1999 on...just get in touch with me if u think u can use it...all u will need is a drum machine or program of the such..and yes the drum hits used in computer blue are there :) again nice vid!

  • nice monitor.

  • I can't play and wont even try to play one note one guitar, but I love that instrument so much!

And you do a great job, never get tired of listening and watching it! I'll give you a 5 * all the way!

Way to go vman! And thanks for sharing!

  • fast tutorial... quess i need to read tabs to understand

  • Yeah, sorry about that. YouTube caps you at 10 minutes. As it was, I only had 17 seconds to spare. Using the video with tabs should be helpful. Try Ultimate-Guitar, I just did a search and they have a tab for the song.

  • Absolutely amazing what you can do with your guitar!

I cannot play one tune but recognize a great player when I hear/see one.

And you have great potential !

Good luck and keep posting cause I love it and need it. Music means a great deal to me, any kind, if played well of course.

  • COOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • Thank you. I love this song and this is very helpful to learn how to play it.

  • I wish you were here to teach me.

  • First comment. lol awesome playing
