The original "My Little Pony" could be surprisingly scary and hardcore for its era. Certainly more so than many other 80s cartoons (G.I.Joe and Transformers, I'm looking at YOU). It kinda had a "the Disney princesses move to Sunnydale" feel to it.

I mean, check out the first TV special, "Rescue at Midnight Castle". Yes, it's a cute, girly story...But it's a cute, girly HORROR story.
