@JBarg25 Sadly, I don't think too many theaters have either Cinemascope screens or 70mm projectors any longer. In the SF bay area during the 70's the film would be shown on one of the few remaining. It'll be interesting if the film gets a remastering and is shown on any of the new digital projectors sometime though.
@Oldbmwr100rs: I'm in Western New York. The closest 70mm screen to me is in Toronto, and they show this every six months.
I would think an IMAX run could be amazing. Although I bet the Kubrick estate either turns down the idea or demands that it be shown only on screens that still use the 70mm version of IMAX, similar to Christopher Nolan and the Dark Knight Rises prologue.
The reality is that unless you live in a major city, IMAX is as close as you can get to recreating the 70mm experience.
Stanley Kubrick pay with his life, trying to give the ignorant and blind about our God given potential as Human Species, The greatest movie ever made, with the greatest message for the whole of Humanity.
@LuVit010 The models were huge; the cameras could get inches away without them looking like plastic. That was part of it. That, and making everything look so real that every film after it had to either match it or try something else. This film is why "Star Wars" and "Alien" don't look like the original "Star TREK" television series. See this film in a theater at LEAST once.
Don't be fooled by anyone into thinking this is a bad trailer. 2001 is an experience, and the less you know about it going in, the better it will be. That's exactly the purpose of this trailer. An assualt of astounding images in nonsensical order set to triumphant music that leaves you with just one thought: "I don't know what the hell that was all about, but I want to see it!"
@JasonDamisch You wouldn't believe how they did it. Just about made my jaw drop when I learned. The whole room rotates, with the camera fixed to a dolly on the floor that turns the *camera* upside-down as the rest of the room moves.
One who interprets 2001 as a science fiction movie did actually understand nothing about this movie.

What a beautiful thing for Time magazine to say. Made me cry because it's absolutely true.

Better yet, see it on the big screen. I always fell asleep when trying to watch it on DVD. Then I got to see it on a curved 70mm screen in England.
There literally is no comparision.

One great thing about this film is that it is the only realistic portrayal of 'artificial gravity' in any science fiction movie that I know of.
