  • anyone know what music this is?

  • @beestepherz Lech Jankowski (Leszek Jankowski)

  • @Sizzorfite thank yoouuuu!!

  • ano ba yan ui

  • i can't wait to see their work in "jack and diane"

  • That doll really looks like Vincent Price..

  • @prezadent1 - Hey I'm not an animation-encyclopedia - wasn't aware of Harryhausen

  • Look. Tim Burton is no better then Quay, nor is Quay better then Tim Burton.

While some say they prefer Tim, and others say they prefer Quay, when you get right down to it, it does not matter. What do Quay and Tim do? Create animation. Tim favors more whimsically childlike stuff, with a somewhat darkish, and often humorous take on things. The Quay brothers just have a much more dark, surreal twist on everything. However, what do Tim and the Quay brothers both have in common? They create art.

  • So beautiful. 2:20-2:28. Screws coming up and the focus pulling back...

  • Really? Nobody's mentioning Jiri Barta or the 'Cartoon Noir' compilation???

  • The Brothers Quay are beyond amazing, the level of creativity and depth to the level of confusion that causes you to delve past the animation into their minds far surpasses the whimsy and sometimes genius of Burton animation. They animate for the craft, not for the masses.

  • amazing.

  • The Brothers Quay and Jan Svankmajer, my two favorite surrealist artists of the 20th (and 21st) century. Of course, Salvador Dali is amazing too, but before my time.

  • this is beautiful, it must of blew people away when it first was released

  • Their animation is creepy- no wonder Burton was inspired by them!

  • i suggest playing Rainy mood dot com while watching the quay bros. very cooll

  • Widocznie...nie stac nas bylo na nic innego.

The only thing I can say is, I'm speechless.

  • Just found this did these guys make the Sex Disease video for Velvet Acid Christ??

  • This is how the Video of Nirvanas Lithium actually looked like but they changed the idea.

  • q locooo

  • Reminds me of a scene in "MirrorMask" where Jack-In-The-Box type doll/mask women turn the main character into the princess of darkness while singing "Close To You"....

Both are fantastic scenes but "Street of Crocodiles" just blows my mind with wtf-ery

  • this music is amazing

  • I can't describe it, but when I sit in the dark and watch these, it's like living in some bizarre childhood dream world. Anyone would give a cursory view and label it stupid and boring. But it's just beautiful somehow.

  • lady gaga a Q/B fan? or did she stop at the motion of Dali and Bun~uel's "Andalusian Dog"?

  • So this is where TOOL gets all their ideas for the music videos....although after reading another comment I see that the brothers worked with the band....well at least TOOL chose a good artist to borrow from

  • The Quay Bros and Jan Svenkmajer never got the recognition they deserved. Also, some of Tim Burton's movies, like Planet of the Apes and Batman, were just plain silly.

  • Haha, and all these years I thought Adam Jones of TOOL had a uniqe mind. He totally ripped these guys off!

  • Weird, twisted, and beautiful, just like modern life.

  • um how come no one is talking about how extremely creepy this is? yea yeah, its good art, whatever. but while i watched that i felt like shit!

  • @alexbacaaw1 hahahaha you'Re right somehow, but you must admit this needs more skill than your sex and the city episode

  • We are the official distributors of The Quay Brothers' works and you can learn more about them in the artists section on the LUX homepage.

We look forward to finding out more about your work and opinions!

  • All hail the Quay brothers!

If anyone gets the chance check out my stop motion animations, thankyou please!

  • because "Street of crocodile" was written by Polish, and brothers Quay are conecting with Poland, they like it, inteeresting with culture and they cooperating with few Polish people. You can read about them

  • Why, at the end of that movie, lector speaks in polish language?

  • I recently heard Tim Burton referred to as 'the godfather of alternative animation' -- thats bullshit. The Quay Brothers, Jan Svankmajer and Miyazaki are by far the godfatherS of alternative animation...Tim Burton has only done three animated films, one of them wasn't even a motion picture it was a short...

  • It's also bullshit because "Nightmare before christmas" wasn't even animated by him. Henry Selick actually directed that film, and wouldn't be surprised if he did the others too.

  • Absolutely. Furthermore there are lots of animators who are producing brilliant and unusual work out there, yet they aren't even recognized or well known. How can Tim Burton be considered the godfather of alternative animation when he doesn't incorporate it into most of his work? Its probably because most people haven't heard of The Quay Brothers, Svankmajer ETC. I don't know whether thats sad, or perhaps good that these real artists haven't been consumed by the mainstream...

  • I forgot to mention Michel Ocelot...

  • Comment removed

  • @TheOrientalNightFish The Quay Brothers themselves say that the godfather was actually Władysław Starewicz who was animating befor WWII.

  • @TheOrientalNightFish I never heard such a thing, Tim Burton himself never claimed to be "the Godfather of alternative animation"! However, you must admit that since "Vincent" and "The nightmare before christmas" A lot of people are becoming more and more interested in Stop Motion (I am one of them). And thanks to that I discovered the Brothers Quay just today, and I love it!

  • No no ImaginaryHapiness, I said that I heard him referred to as The Godfather of alternative animation by somebody else in a documentary. I never said that he claimed the title himself. My personal interest in stop-motion comes from love of vintage and strange work, plus the Quay Brothers, Jan Svankmajer, Michel Ocelot, Miyazaki ETC. Although I have no problem with Nightmare/Vincent, Tim Burtons work doesn't impress me that much.

  • @TheOrientalNightFish

    My thoughts exactly.

  • @TheOrientalNightFish Not only that, Burton didn't even direct "The Nightmare Before Christmas". He wrote the story but Henry Selick directed.

"Corpse Bride" he co-directed with Mike Johnson, but there are tons of computer generated animations for MY personal taste. I wish it would have been more old school, more 'organic' so to speak.

  • @TheOrientalNightFish Don't forget Bill Plympton.

  • @TheOrientalNightFish Starewicz is best served with humble pie.

  • @TheOrientalNightFish Amen to that

  • @TheOrientalNightFish Nah i disagree. Tim Burton is the godfather, not because he's made more or less, but because he designed nightmare before christmas which was a major success and cast a spotlight on all this awesomeness

  • @300warrior300 -- Well, I don't think The Quay Brothers etc need any spotlight from Tim Burton - there are enough fans of their stuff/similar stuff who recognize its greatness. Basically Its not down to Tim Burton that they are known and admired. Its not that I totally dislike Tim Burton, but he can't really be compared to the Quay Brothers - their work is far more imaginative, dark and interesting. But thats just my opinion - & I do quite like Nightmare + Vincent.

  • @TheOrientalNightFish

How can you omit Ray Harryhausen??

  • @TheOrientalNightFish While this is good, give us a movie from these guys and I will convert. Face it, Tim Burton is just more popular, that's the only reason why he has that title.

  • @Jokuki9 tim has the money and title like you said. today, talent is not what is required to be an artist. you need money and titles. sad era we are in today.

  • @TheOrientalNightFish I would say Władysław Starewicz is the ultimate master of stop-motion; look him up...he was animating dead insects in the 1910's...his work is amazing...check him out....The Cameraman's Revenge, or especially the Tale of the Fox are outstanding. He was a pioneer.

  • Ridethespiral23 is correct, The Brothers Quay films and works only inspired other forms of stop motion animation, including many of the TOOL music videos.

I think the Brothers Quay did a dream sequence in a major motion picture, but most of their stuff is either hard to find, or not in the public eye. But they are still amazing and awesome to watch. :D

Figured I'd throw another point of view into the mix..

  • Street of Crocodiles IS used for a Velvet Acid Christ music video, but aside from that I don't know about the Brothers Quay having ANYTHING to do with music videos! The Brothers Quay have influenced many in the music industry (including myself!) The influences can clearly be found in videos by Chet Zar, Bill Morrison, & even Chris Cunningham!!! But as you SHOULD know, none of those men are the Brothers Quay!

  • Do Brothers Quay really have a new version of animated short-film "The Sandman"? I'd like to see it.

  • i quite doubt someone is going to ripoff such a group as tool. specially since someone has gone to the royal college of art, london/university of the arts in philadelphia.

  • The most atmospheric and unsettling animation I have ever seen, I have a DVD collection of the Quay's work and "street" is the best in my view. It mirrors elements of some types of bad dreams I have had over the years in an uncannily simmilar way.

  • What is the music? I'd like to hear more.

  • arr. stop flooding me. I get it. :< I stupidly believed wikipedia when I was curious if there was any conncection or not.

  • And so your atonement begins...

  • Thank you for posting! I'm hoping to add some Brothers Quay to my collection of surreal films/things. I love the music in the film sample here.

  • Wow... I'd give it 5 stars but it's now exactly 70 votes and i'm a bit neurotic so maby later ok :)

    Love the emotion...

  • These are reminiscent of the nightmares I had as a very small child that they ended up tranquilizing me for.........blessedly so

  • Do not fall prey to the measurements/ratings....the hopelessness has no horizon then

  • Do we reject other artists such as Rei Kawakubo from Comme des Garcons for bringing the brothers to the mainstream or applaud them?

  • I've seen them puppets :) they were amazing little things!

  • Love it.

  • It's an amazing piece of video...very sad. Tool ripped off from the brothers Quay, which is apparent with their video sober.

  • Actually, they made the videos for Tool.

  • Comment removed

  • No Adam Jones Directs the videos, Kevin willis does artwork along with Chet Zar

TOOL WAS INFLUENCED BY THE BROTHERS QUAY THE BROTHERS QUAY CONTRIBUTE IN NO OTHER WAY TO THEIR VIDEOS

  • strawberryzful your very ignorant, Tool's influence is the Brothers Quay jackass they didnt rip anybody off

  • this is pretty awesome. i saw morgan routtes tool music video.

does anybody know what the hells going on in here? xP

  • Yes .. it is an adaptation to the story ... "Street of Crocodiles" written by author Bruno Schulz.

  • @lastkingofhearts Amazing writer -also see Gombrowicz and Witkacy.

  • These artists came much before Tim Burton you ignorant fuck.

  • I need to look further into the works of the quay brothers. They're very similar to Jan Svankmajer from what I've seen :)

    Very intruiging!

  • These videos are awesome 5star

  • where can I see the whole thing?

  • the quay brothers create such pure art, and are pure artists themselves. much love and respect.

  • My best friend showed me a rare dvd collection of the brothers quay it is awesome and sometimes dry but very artistic

  • who the f!@# is tool? this is the brothers quay!

  • It's a band pretty creepy band but my all time favorite band.

  • The street of Crocodiles is a book from Bruno Schultz.

    very highly recomendable.

and tool definately got insperation for their videos from the brothers quay.

  • When the video for "Sober " came out, most people thought the Quay Brothers did it.

  • I loved what looked like faces in the bubbles. Gloomy, Stunning video and stunning channel also. The Quay Brothers work from what i've seen always reminds me of my impression of childhood.

  • isn't it reminds you of when you have a nightmare.?? just something about the atmosphere, creepy , I LOVED IT.

  • people... this was made in 1986. you have it backwards -- Tool stole from these guys.

you should see the whole film -- there IS actually stop motion meat in it.

  • this is a really good film. It's creepy, but I actually understand where the writer, whose story they based it on, was coming from.

I agree - it's worth seeing the whole film

  • tool didnt take these vids, these were used in fan vids, and stop motion? thats been goin on for a VERY long time

  • @jungleseed That's an untrue statement, The Quay brothers actually made music videos for Tool. Maynard didn't steal anything, the Quay's gave it to him.

  • @mcgowanm095 Which videos? if you're talking about the 'Sober' video, it was created by Fred Stuhr and Adam Jones, not the Quays. It was definitely "inspired" by the Quays, though.

  • @jungleseed You are 100% right. Adam Jones has in fact said that he has been very influenced by the Quay brothers, which is how I came to know their work. I used to think that the stop motion Tool videos were the most original and creative thing I had seen, until I saw these shorts from the Quay bros. THEY are the most original and creative people. Jones basically copied their style.

  • @jungleseed So what ?

Adam Jones is the type of person to steal and not credit properly.

These are, so to speak, his roots.

  • @jungleseed bro, tool didn't steel from anyone. no one STOLE. they were inspired

  • @jungleseed Kurt Cobain said in an interview that he hoped Tool would get sued by the Brothers for plagiarizing their work to such an extent.

  • @motocarnage615 Cobain also said he wanted the Lithium video to be in the Quay Brothers style, but it never worked out. By the way, its his birthday today

  • @motocarnage615 who gives a fuck about what some junkie said?

  • @t00117598 Nirvana wanted to have the Lithium video in contrast to this and because I like Tool and Nirvana I thought I would check this out, should someone get you a cookie or something?

  • @motocarnage615 you have cookies? can you e-mail me some?

  • @jungleseed well that's true, they admit it, still theyre fucking awesome! as well as the quay brothers

  • Comment removed

  • @jungleseed how can a BAND that makes MUSIC steal something from these guys i love tool and they couldn't possibly steal what is this stop figure movie or what ever if this was a band and they stole a song they okay but these are two completely different things dumb fuck thats like saying a criminal stole the cops job does that make any sense what so ever? no didnt think so, so shut the fuck up and stop thinking tool stole this gay shit cuz they didnt they came up with there own shit fuck you
