  • What an ethereal song! Thanks very much for posting it, I appreciate it!!! ;-))

  • This Mortal Coil Forever!

  • How can someone not like this song? it's one of the purest and lovliest voices ever...I can't stop listening to it.

  • can't believe how this touches me to the core everytime...

  • I loved you a long time ago, you know.

  • i always loved this song, and the whole 4AD artists. I always wondered who's the awesome girl on this album (and on this video) too, since she's not Liz Fraser. Anyone ?

  • @PaoloZambrini

I'm not sure either. Always wondered because she is beautiful in an 80s goth/very sad type way. You can see her pain flow through the album cover.

  • @PaoloZambrini

    her name is Pallas Citroen.

  • @PaoloZambrini Her name is Pallas Citroen...

  • @PaoloZambrini

apparentley an artist going by the name of Pallas Citroen (like the car and therefore hard to find) but she is on linkdln

  • @PaoloZambrini She is called Pallas Citroën; a girl that Ivo Watts Russell and Vaughan Oliver met in the London goth scene...

  • @PaoloZambrini She's called Pallas Citroen, and is used on loads of 4AD covers and promos...and you're right...she is stunning

  • @PaoloZambrini its lisa gerard. the usual singer with TMC.

  • it hurts f***ing a lot, though it's still unbelievably beautiful

  • Haunting, magical, sadness and loss..........beautifully put to music. One of my favorite songs of all time. True artistry. Rich in color and full of emotion.

  • @dbo1300

    Beautifully stated.

  • @00SoldierofFortune00

    Concur with that my friend.

  • @00SoldierofFortune

    Ciao

Grazie "Amico Mio" for uploading and "Hosting" this I guess! As a young man in my early 20s when the brilliant "Impresario" Ivo Watts Russel put together this "Project" I had already been a huge "Cocteau Twins" fan, and this debut ensemble would introduce me to "Dead Can Dance" another 4AD love! I still cannot get over the striking difference between this track and Frasers' cover of the Tim Buckley song "Song To The Siren" on the same album! Simply breathtaking!

  • This song always brings raw emotions out in the open to me like a knife gainst wound..lovlier lyrics are hard to find, quite the cover...

  • liz fraser's voice penetrates my soul like no other female vocalist does! pure magic!

  • Play one M00:00RE time!

  • @00SoldierofFortune00

    Ciao Bello!

    Grazie il mio amico!

For hosting this brilliant piece! After loving this album for approaching 30 yrs, I'm still struck at how disperate this track is ,with the other contribution of Elizabeth Frazsers' "Song To The Siren" on this album! At the time, and even today, I cannot believe I'm listening to the same artist! Ivo Watts Russel acted as a brilliant "Impresario"! Breathtakingly, no hauntingly beautiful!

    Grazie Mille!

    Il Suo Amico

  • twenty five years and I still tear up .

  • @TGubbins66 I know what you mean. I remember hearing this on the John Peel show somewhere around 27 years ago, and I just stopped, and listened, and experienced. All this time later, and this song still has the same effect.

  • I hate comments about This Mortal Coil, because no matter what we say about their music it sounds so damn SHALLOW!!!

  • Roy Harper's version (the original) is obviously far superior. But I'll give this band credit for covering a great song.

  • just amazing...!

  • There is nothing in the world better than Liz.

    Nothing.

  • @chrisjackson1 agreed.

  • @chrisjackson1 true

  • @chrisjackson1 true

  • the most beautiful song i have ever heard!

  • I don't care who wrote it. The strings and haunting vocals of this version are unmatched. One my favorite songs ever.

  • Ascoltando brani come questo, diventa così evidente la differenza tra musica e rumore.

    Questa consapevolezza, naturalmente, comporta dolore.

  • Another Day, timeless Harper classic!

  • Wow...it's so gorgeous.

  • Accept a simple comment in italian you easily understand: UN VIDEO MAGICO

  • @giuseppemontanari tambien se dice igual en español!! una cancion magica!!

  • this rendition makes the song really immortal

  • Comment removed

  • haunting

  • Who's the girl on the cover?

  • @neilrw10 Most are of Pallas Citroen.

  • Love this, and Harper's original...and Kate n Pete, can't go wrong with a wonderful song....

  • A magical moment.

  • Love it, great stuff as they say !!!!

  • elizabeth fraser's voice is so beautiful

  • I first bought this album as a LP and now I have it as a Cd and also on my ipod. Never get sick of hearing these wonderful thought provoking songs

  • Im 16 and ive been listening to this music for years, it's so much better than the shit we get fed by R n B artists today

  • @Thecuregalore94 congratulations to be continued :) 16 years old !!!! i'm very proud of you !!!

the cocteau twins dead can dance etc ... go and don't stop this :)

a french guy of this generation :)

  • BEEEEEEEERC OF THEATRE OF TRAGEDY A MEANT TO SAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! (for the image)

OOH THIS SONG AND THAT ALBUM I LIKE TOO MUCH!

  • BEEEEEEEERC OF THIS MORTAL COILL

OOH THIS SONG AND THAT ALBUM I LIKE TOO MUCH!

  • Oh my god - this is one of my fave sad songs ever - and my friend just posted this link - My wife just left and I'm not sure I'm ready yet, but here goes - be ready with the tissues.

  • it gets me every time

  • sigh

  • increible voz, me hace acordar a Lisa Gerrard. gracias por compartir!

  • beautiful

  • this song is so heart wrenching. I love the lyrics. So sad and beautiful.

It remains me of this guy i once knew and loved. Due to stupid drama and complications, we could never be with each other. The lyrics say a lot about our relationship. I hope he's listening to this...

  • @BlueDemon555 Try the original Roy Harper version, this is OK, but he plays and sings it brilliantly. Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel also covered it..

  • Some korean soap opera took a fragment of this song for their soundtrack

  • Oh really my dear, I can't see what we fear

Standing here with ourselves in between us

And at the door, we can't say more, than just another day

Without a sound, I turn around, and I walk away...

  • Siempre seras mi amor, lo siento...gracias por venir conmigo ..Goldfrapp

    Revolver01

  • she has the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen.

  • Thank you! Now I feel so old! An oldie but a goodie!

  • timeless

  • Beautiful.

Also check out the sublime original by Roy Harper and also Kate Bush/Peter Gabriel's masterly take

  • Beautiful - Makes Me Cry :'(

  • vocal art, gorgeous.

  • I love this version of the song. Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel also did very goog cover, but I think this is the best. Angelic voice and nostalgic strings... Beautiful.

  • ♥

  • not knowing what on earth there was to know

  • And at the door she can't say more

    than just another day

    and without a sound

    I turn around

    and I walk away...

  • dierdre rutkowsky

  • masterpiece

  • I loved Elizabeth and Cocteau Twins , but Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush ripped this to shreds.

  • ....Reply to @TheD2JBug

Peter Gabriel and Elizabeth Fraizer Ripped my heart to shreds

Kate Bush Ripped the song to shreds.

  • I've taken some anti-depressants that seemed to do the trick, and others made it worse. But running is the best anti-depressant and it's free.

  • It depends on how far down the drain you're willing to go.

  • This song hurt me with its beauty and intensity.

  • My God, i only knew Song to the Siren in the this mortal coil version, but this is great as well.

  • I wonder if Mozart could have written his Requiem being on antidepressants. Although think he did wine. The point is that medicals will bring relief to many, but instead, certain books, ideas, music etc. will never be created.

And if so, they will never inspire anyone and will not change they way people think and feel.

  • I'm sorry, this is just asinine. I'm not saying that I totally agree with being totally reliant on medication but hinting that culture itself would implode if anti-depressants existed hundreds of years prior just is not right.

Good, exceptionally composed, "Emotional" music is 90% theory and 10% emotion. You can't just be sad and write Mozart, you have to be Mozart to write Mozart.

  • @ParadoxVincent you made interesting point. But still, I did not imply that culture would 'implode' due to vast use of antidepressants. Suggest rather we can expect culture to change its course.

Instead of his 'Requiem', Mozart would compose something different - possibly equally brilliant. Kafka would write other books. Van Gogh....oh, we would not have

    much from him.

  • @68DucatiDad this is something I'm just realising, truly. that it is a special thing just to have these feelings.

the deepest sadness is as fulfilling as the dizziest high. and to feel at all is pretty divine, no?

  • people talking about medication...I make an effort to resist it. it just papers over the cracks, makes automatons of us all. people fear the feelings they have, and they realise that it's difficult to function, so take the pills.

that's just it. if you don't function, you don't take your place in the great mechanism, and have to face it all as it really is, from the truly individual POV. it's a struggle most can't face.

anyway. this is just breathtaking. the strings, her voice, intertwined.

  • Absolutely. And as a result, "Individual" has become a super-diluted word with very little meaning at all.

"It's a struggle most can't face" is spot on.

Thanks for the beautiful video & song.

  • Interesting point. Suggest that antidepressants can change the course of our civilization. It wouldnt be the first time when chemicals shift history (mashrooms, alc)

  • Strange. Such delicate thing. But more powerful than all these metal bands can ever play.

  • Milu moja, placzę z tęsknoty

  • super ..sublime i had the chance in 1985 to see here in a sound check in rome...but sche ...after cancell the concert

  • Yes, you're right. It's not casual that gothic rock and other "deep" new wave subgenres died years ago. We have insignificant bands like Gossip or other shitty groups that the people call "rock bands"...Just a few musicians can resist the "plastic wave"...

  • ROY HARPER was great... as is Elisabeth !

Follow me to HAPPINESS ISLAND =^..^= !

  • Roy is your man. This is a mans song of lust and longing.

  • Oh my god, though it's just a piece of music, so spectacular... so real that you can feel it...

  • and my first love......

  • Mine too. Only 20 years ago - and even now this song hurts. Still, if it hurts, I suppose that means I'm alive.

  • @elldee50 you know, i think that's a good overall response to the emotional safeguards this song can trigger. probably the best i've ever heard.

  • God!! I haven't heard this song for soo long!! it really brings back memories, bittersweet memories,it's soo moving.

  • Have you noticed how deeply european goth rock is/was? Even when they make some covers of american songs (Tim Buckley's Song to the Siren for example). I think it depends on the Romanticism and Decadentism cultural roots of these musicians

  • Beautiful Music...This Mortal Coil is one of my favourite all time bands...the music pulsates, distills honey. I am glad to be Human.

  • ich liebe das lied

  • mich dich

  • i had this album when i was a teenager its one of the best of all time

  • I could see how this cover could heavily influence Sinead O'Connor's version of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U. Both have that aching but beautiful feeling of longing for what could have been in a relationship. Both say it with the same barely controlled emotion.

  • omg YES! Both songs have the same feel to them - I never even thought about it until you made the connection

    Good Insight! :)

  • such beauty is what makes suicide too much of a shame.

  • I knew a girl once, this song will always remind me of her, and of laying alone all night on her living room sofa, playing Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left as the sun rose...

  • one can only have beautiful memories listening to TMC and Mr Drake - never was time so mournful of youth recollecting days, nights and dawns wiith such liquid air for music

  • this is the power of music

  • Comment removed

  • still makes me cry, and recently dumped...let the tears flow, gotta let it out. Maybe some bloke will love me one day :(

  • they seem to flock to me when I'm not looking and don't want them. try that baby. hugs.

  • Enjoy your freedom, as long as you can! Being in a relationship is hard shit, I kid you not.

  • Im sure some bloke loves you now.

  • This version is amazing. Roy Harper's original is amazing. Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel's version is amazing.

  • her voices its beautiful, but i dont know... she scare me -.-

  • Elizabeth, yet again, delivering a stunning vocal performance.

  • Liz sings in an amazing way, unusual piece of music. Piękne.

  • At least this might get our Roy the recognition he deserves. Tis true though this id lovely but the original is a proper heart breaker

  • oh yeah - don't get me wrong, this version is amazing and ethereal - but the original by Roy Harper really sinks into you. Like, you can tell the music and lyrics come from real life experience <3

  • Totally spot on. Really if you are not familiar with the Roy Harpers work you would never know that it is he who is the greatest rock poet of the last 50 years. A woman is unlikely to really do this justice, for the simple reason that it is about his love expressed from a mans point of view. "and I must take her......" Roy Harper is a genius, check out Stormcock.

  • I wish Liz Fraser would do an album of cover versions, like this. It would be brilliant.

  • There is original video of this song?

  • this sort of music is just so beautiful...its just so pure...perfect...gives me goosebumps...

  • Comment removed

  • I adore this song for reasons already mentioned. Does anyone care to elaborate what the lyrics actually mean?

  • kate bush and peter gabriel video pretty much sums it up ; or not . . .

To me it feels like disappointement at possible paths not taken . . .

  • This reminds me of working in a fancy resteraunt in ( my opinion ) horrible downtown indianapolis ; inexplicably this song was on a long loop tape of music and i would hear it every few hours ... very nice !

  • make me remember when I was waiting in my father car watching outside with this music playing

  • This album is a masterpiece!

  • I hope that the new generations don´t forget this music

  • It's up to us to spread the word about this kind of music. It will never be mainstream and I think it should be that way, but as long as there is always a small group of hardcore listeners, it will always live on.

  • @00SoldierofFortune00 good things you wrote you know i am an hardcore listener really : madball agnostic front terror nyhc 100% but before when i was younger i listened cocteau twins christian death and 4ad no matter ! i just talk about feelings and energy; i think you'll understand keep the faith you are not alone i am not alone bye !

  • One of my all time favorites.

  • This Mortal Coil made what was quite simply the best three albums of our generation. The diversity of the songs they covered from Talking Heads to Rodney Crowell was astounding. I've been lucky enough to see Liz perform twice over the years here in Houston. I'm still just in love with her. If they could only continue to produce their work as a unit... PLEASE, Ivo and John! The Hope Blister (while good) is not enough. All we can do is hope...

  • louise rutkowsky

  • ...love....

  • so evocative...atmospheric...haunting etc etc etc...just to repeat what everyone else has said...

  • This was always my favourite cut from the album -- so beautiful, so sad, so simple

  • extremely atmospheric

  • her eyes are so big sometimes..(liz, not the coil girl).

  • god I thought I forgot alllllllllll of this music... why are they showing the coil girl i thought that was liz singing..maybe I'm wrong...

  • Liz is singing, and that picture is of the album filigree & shadow, this song is from it'll end in tears. All this mortal coil is genius.

  • how beautiful.

  • GJ!

  • Thanks for posting.

I'm a Roy Harper fan, but I truly fell in love with This Mortal Coil.

    Liz Fraser sounds fantastic.

  • great atmosphere; T.M.C. was a beautiful star in the musical firmament.

Thanks to share us this video!

  • what a voice! beautiful, thank you 00SoldierofFortune00

  • No problem. I want to share This Mortal Coil's and the Cocteau Twins music with the world.

  • and I'm glad for that :)

  • I agree, very beautiful song. Liz's voice is so sweet...

  • Beautiful song
