i always loved this song, and the whole 4AD artists. I always wondered who's the awesome girl on this album (and on this video) too, since she's not Liz Fraser. Anyone ?
Haunting, magical, sadness and loss..........beautifully put to music. One of my favorite songs of all time. True artistry. Rich in color and full of emotion.
Grazie "Amico Mio" for uploading and "Hosting" this I guess! As a young man in my early 20s when the brilliant "Impresario" Ivo Watts Russel put together this "Project" I had already been a huge "Cocteau Twins" fan, and this debut ensemble would introduce me to "Dead Can Dance" another 4AD love! I still cannot get over the striking difference between this track and Frasers' cover of the Tim Buckley song "Song To The Siren" on the same album! Simply breathtaking!
For hosting this brilliant piece! After loving this album for approaching 30 yrs, I'm still struck at how disperate this track is ,with the other contribution of Elizabeth Frazsers' "Song To The Siren" on this album! At the time, and even today, I cannot believe I'm listening to the same artist! Ivo Watts Russel acted as a brilliant "Impresario"! Breathtakingly, no hauntingly beautiful!
@TGubbins66 I know what you mean. I remember hearing this on the John Peel show somewhere around 27 years ago, and I just stopped, and listened, and experienced. All this time later, and this song still has the same effect.
Oh my god - this is one of my fave sad songs ever - and my friend just posted this link - My wife just left and I'm not sure I'm ready yet, but here goes - be ready with the tissues.
this song is so heart wrenching. I love the lyrics. So sad and beautiful.
It remains me of this guy i once knew and loved. Due to stupid drama and complications, we could never be with each other. The lyrics say a lot about our relationship. I hope he's listening to this...
I love this version of the song. Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel also did very goog cover, but I think this is the best. Angelic voice and nostalgic strings... Beautiful.
I wonder if Mozart could have written his Requiem being on antidepressants. Although think he did wine. The point is that medicals will bring relief to many, but instead, certain books, ideas, music etc. will never be created.
And if so, they will never inspire anyone and will not change they way people think and feel.
I'm sorry, this is just asinine. I'm not saying that I totally agree with being totally reliant on medication but hinting that culture itself would implode if anti-depressants existed hundreds of years prior just is not right.
Good, exceptionally composed, "Emotional" music is 90% theory and 10% emotion. You can't just be sad and write Mozart, you have to be Mozart to write Mozart.
@ParadoxVincent you made interesting point. But still, I did not imply that culture would 'implode' due to vast use of antidepressants. Suggest rather we can expect culture to change its course.
Instead of his 'Requiem', Mozart would compose something different - possibly equally brilliant. Kafka would write other books. Van Gogh....oh, we would not have
people talking about medication...I make an effort to resist it. it just papers over the cracks, makes automatons of us all. people fear the feelings they have, and they realise that it's difficult to function, so take the pills.

Yes, you're right. It's not casual that gothic rock and other "deep" new wave subgenres died years ago. We have insignificant bands like Gossip or other shitty groups that the people call "rock bands"...Just a few musicians can resist the "plastic wave"...
Have you noticed how deeply european goth rock is/was? Even when they make some covers of american songs (Tim Buckley's Song to the Siren for example). I think it depends on the Romanticism and Decadentism cultural roots of these musicians
I could see how this cover could heavily influence Sinead O'Connor's version of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U. Both have that aching but beautiful feeling of longing for what could have been in a relationship. Both say it with the same barely controlled emotion.
I knew a girl once, this song will always remind me of her, and of laying alone all night on her living room sofa, playing Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left as the sun rose...
one can only have beautiful memories listening to TMC and Mr Drake - never was time so mournful of youth recollecting days, nights and dawns wiith such liquid air for music
oh yeah - don't get me wrong, this version is amazing and ethereal - but the original by Roy Harper really sinks into you. Like, you can tell the music and lyrics come from real life experience <3
Totally spot on. Really if you are not familiar with the Roy Harpers work you would never know that it is he who is the greatest rock poet of the last 50 years. A woman is unlikely to really do this justice, for the simple reason that it is about his love expressed from a mans point of view. "and I must take her......" Roy Harper is a genius, check out Stormcock.
This reminds me of working in a fancy resteraunt in ( my opinion ) horrible downtown indianapolis ; inexplicably this song was on a long loop tape of music and i would hear it every few hours ... very nice !
