everyone has their lids on for these reasons:

everyone knows that spontaneous fights mean that you must remove your opponents' helmet, not your own. Only in pre-arranged fights do you remove your own.

Also, removing your own helmet is a severe penalty, so it is a stupid idea to do that, when it can become part of the fight anyway.
