One thing hidden from the view of the contemporary world: his art!
The man is one of the greatest masters of all time, way beyond even Cezanne, Picasso and Matisse,
But on second thought, I realize that there is a dilemma here. If you ask this question: Can a worldly man see his art? The reply is a big resounding NO!
When the mountain is too high, there is no way you can see its pinnacle if you are directly at its foot.
Can you imagine waking up to find that Art today is as professional, true and real - as high flying as any great era in ARTtime - Art that is unfeigned and drawn from a fervent study of the woof and warp of the brightest stars of creation - Art that is so staggeringly wild and out of this world that it makes your hair follicles atomic in response ---if you can imagine waking up to this, then you will understand what happened the day I found Knox WORKING some 21 years ago.
Thanks for the heads up 11trixie. I came east to study with Knox at the ASL from 1979-81. He was the first "real" artist I met. He was part of Irving Sandler's group "Concrete Abstractionists" along with Al Held and Ronald Bladen in the late 60s. When I mentioned him to an older lady artist she blushed and called him "Knox with the bedroom eyes". Hard against soft, thick against thin, curved against straight.
Pat and Don have captured the very essence of Knox:brilliant artist, sensualist, exotic, magician, funster, and inspiring teacher. Thank you both. Great video and treasured gift.
this raw savage beauty of a Man truly comfortable with his masculine artistic curiosity which in itself makes the hair on your arms rise up while watching this honest raw loving depiction of Knox Martin who clearly loves all of the shapes whirling through him... man, woman, bird, cat, cockroach, food, shapes to feast on.
Having known my father Knox all my life, this excerpt of the documentary on him, has, thank goodness, captured his genius, beauty and Giant Beingness. The viewpoint of the video taker has attempted to depict the miracle that is Knox, but it is only a tiny fraction of the many facets of this rough diamond. I'd suggest an update since that was filmed, new studio, new look, new creations and games since that was filmed 6 years ago.
A wonderfu;l video, of a brilliant and inspiring artist, one of the truly great artists of the 20th Century. This is not to be missed by anyone interested in art.
Pat and Don, I thought I had already posted a comment but it seems not to have gone through - I am so proud of you both, and this makes a heartfelt promise to be brilliant. I predict the art world will embrace it, NYC and worldwide. I am much more music than visual art oriented, and I absolutely adore the soundtrack, which is over-the-top perfection. Life, filmmaking, art, artist, animal, woman, music.. all as art... precocious, precious, heartfelt.
