"Oh, the problems of the large." This movie just contained inspired madness! When it first came out I dragged my college girlfriend to see it three times, and three decades later I still love it, even though it's not easy being me. :-D
Ray Walston is perfect as Pappy. Remember him in "South Pacific"? Wearing a coconut bra and singing with the ladies onstage? He was a singing sailor twice!
A lot of people like this movie for many good reasons. It's charming and fun to watch. It was also surprisingly accurate to the comic. It was unfortunately the musical version and not the straight comic version. It was released at the same time whereabouts of some giant megablockbuster which also helped to kill its audience turnout.
Haha, so true. He made a memorable apperance in "Addams Family Reunion" where he played an old man who was perhaps even more hateful that Pappy, and after a long cursewordfilled speech about his hate for his family, Tim Curry (as Gomez) rises from his chair and says "Here here, the man really knows who to express himself", hehe.

Pappy reminds me of my dad. Old and grouchy and still thinks he can still kick ass even in his late 60's!

I love this movie, but I think you're lyrics are from the soundtrack or something because they don't match up.

Poopdeck Pappy: His mother ups and dies, and he wouldn't eat his spinach.
Popeye: She choked on it, pop.
Poopdeck Pappy: His poppa out of work, and he wouldn't eat his spinach.
Popeye: It wasn't my fault.
Poopdeck Pappy: The whole country in a depressigan. Ooh, and he wouldn't eat his spinach.
Popeye: That was Coolidge, Poppa.

Ninja: Poopdeck Pappy needs to work on his grandparenting skills, just like Popeye needs to work his "fudda"-ring skills. :D
