this is the version from the "A Window in Time" disc: "The recordings on this disc are of Rachmaninov's reproducing piano rolls as electronically translated for the Bösendorfer 290SE by Wayne Stahnke."
@lolonthecake Yes :-)) There was one YT video of this on another channel that had over 100M views (from the CD Rachmaninov Plays Rachmaninov, The Ampico Piano Recordings) that was pulled by YT a couple of years ago - copyright. Since, there have been a half-dozen new ones posted.
This is the ONE piano performance that is unforgettable.
I agree with you. it is so moving, and to think that this is the composer himself playing! What a beautiful technique he had. His music just makes me well up inside.

@vignetique Yes, all poured into Rachmaninoff's eulogy (Elegie) in memory of his friend who had passed away.

so it would seem there are a couple of different versions of this using the piano roll as a basis

This is so wonderful, moving and haunting at the same time. Just as many other pieces by him, pure genius!

@NavReNavraS This was recorded on an AMPICO(?) piano roll, and reproduced on a modified Estonia 9 food grand in 1978-79
