right on... i had the canon niffy fifty 50mm f1.8, liked it. then i found the sigma 50mm f1.4 and fell in LOVE. i was going to get the canon 50mm f1.4, but liked the sigma WAY BETTER...
i found the aperture ring on the sigma lens was more rounded than the canon. the canon 50mm f1.4 had a more octagon shape.
Note: f2.2 is f2.2 regardless of lens. If one is sharper, it's because of better optics. A 1.8 @ 2.2 will be letting in the same amount of light as a 1.4 @ 2.2. Analogy: A Pinto going 30Mph is just as fast as a Ferrari going 30Mph. Good video - thanks!
I'm still not entirely sure which to buy :) I've been tossing up these two for months (I don't NEED either, but just WANT). I keep saying, well if I'm going to spend $100 for one, why not spend another $300 and get the 1.4 which I'll probably end up getting anyway. GRR.. my brain keeps going in this circle.
@MsRHAwesome The lens hood helps shield against stray light coming in from the sides of the lens. Often such light can compromise image quality by creating a light haze over the entire photo.
i don't understant something, IN A CROP SENSOR, is still a good portrait lens the 50mm? or a 30mm would be recomendable to suit the 50mm (in a full frame, 30 x 1.6 = 48)?
One correction: It's the other way round when it comes to focal lengths. 50mm is 50mm on a full-frame camera. And incidentally 50mm equals 80mm on a 1,6 crop censor body.
@4:20 you claim that the difference between the 2 lenses is one full stop and that is wrong, it is only 2/3 of a stop, 1.4f to 1.8f is 2/3 of a stop, 1.4f to 2.0f is a full stop.
great test!..i just got the 1.8 for my 60D and it beats the hell out of the kitlens 18-135 in detalis sharpness and colors...fantastic lens..it now feels that i get use of the 18mpix on the camera.
I got a Sigma 50mm 1.4 on a Canon 7D, for me it's fantastic!
If you compare the 2 lenses 50mm 1.4, Canon and Sigma, you can see Sigma is bigger and heavier, and it cost little bit more than the Canon... whatever I think both are good lenses
Go for the 1.4, Save a little longer its worth it, quality is better, build is better, more smoother picture. I tested both out and after serious consideration and testing, I chose the 1.4 and I'm sooo glad I made I did. Also if you don't have a prime 50mm in your kit bag get one, you're missing out big time.
@MightyRoy Great question. There are two mail sensor sizes, full and crop. The full frame sensor is usually more money and offers a few more perks. I'll make this a topic for a future video. Thanks.
I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I found your channel via this video (and bought the 1.8 as a result) and I've learned a great deal from you. Keep it up!
if your not going to shoot in rugged terrain with rain, sand storms, and dusty conditions get the tamron 70-300 the quality is on pair with canon and its cheeper.
Guys i just bought the 50mm f1.4 but in manual focus mode the ring feels not as smooth as i expected and towards the end sides of the focus it's feels gritty! Is that normal?
Please! i heard the 1.4 lens is bad for film making because you cant zoom out very good you have to be close to the subject your filming all the time and the 1.8 you dont have to? :o im a film maker i don't really care for the photography part does anyone know what is better for filming?
Well make sure u go for IS if u gona buy f4 70 200mm ! Canon rules ! buy tamron n u will always have back of ur head u compromised ! By the way I think focus for 50mm 1.4 is fast 1.8 really struggles! !
@sheray009 Photography makes me crazy because there is always a compromise. If you're not compromising your budget you're compromising features you might want to use, let alone quality.
I don't have the 70-200L, but I want it badly. In fact I was considering buying the new Tamron 70-300 instead since it got many great reviews, but I know there's no substitute for the f/4. I'm torn.
@thevideoride don't bother with the f/4 non-IS. the optics on the IS are updated, and nobody seems to keep the non-IS in their kit for long. they ALWAYS show up on the used sites by the dozen. nobody is letting go of their 4L IS. everyone ditches the 4L non-IS. surely there's a good reason for that! even at nearly 2X the price, the 4L IS is more sensible.
have any videos with that lens used in it? place give me the link if you do. i see one on ebay from the uk that's pretty cheap

i don't think this review was very good. i didn't know much about the 1.4 from this

Does either of the two also mean for sharper or High-Quality(HD) filming?

@yarcek I think it depends on what you want your perspective to be. I say try both focal lengths and discover what you like most.

@mystery119 yes its good but 1.4 is the best!

@mystery119 its great..you can shoot at ISO 100 with no noise..but as you dont have any IS you have to be steady on the movements

@mystery119 I think so.

@Photoshopuzr You're joking, right? They were talking about the 70-200mm f4 L. The 70-300 Tamron is not even in the same ballpark.

50mm 1.8 and 5Dmkii is a pretty crap combination
I had the 50mm 1.8 for my 50D (which was okay, no complaints)
But the 5Dmkii and the 1.8 is quite shocking,,,,
+++ I recommend buying the 50mm 1.4 regardless of the body you use. +++
