  • Wow, I'm SO SCARED. WAHH.

  • This is not scary, now the V of doom and VID TV, that is some sick shit

  • the horn bit freaks me out.

  • As a small child I thought the capital S of roman type looked angry. I can't now say why.

  • S is the sign of Satan.

  • HOW SPIFFY!

  • Some of the tv logos out there are scary, however I don't find this one scary at all. As a matter of fact, it strikes me as a "happy ending to something". Like having to go to work on a day where there is a dreary thunderstorm and towards quitting time, the rain begins to stop and the sun (red and yellow) begins to appear as the clouds begin to part from one another.

  • ._. For years I've been wondering why it was so scary for people..

    Now..

I STILL dont get why people find it scary.

  • @supermax110 I dont either, but that Viacom V of doom used to scare the crap out of me. The S reminds me of Bewitched

  • It's scary? Ha ha!

    VID is really scary!

  • Damn, that's scary......

  • If you want to know why it's so scary, look at the eyeball in the middle of the logo. It looks like it's staring back at you and it comes out of nowhere.

  • I KNOW WHERE U CAN WATCH THIS SCARRY LOGO, WATCH THE PANTRIDGE FAMILY ON ANTENNA TV.

CHECK LOCAL LISTING IN YOUR AREA ON DTV FORMAT.

  • As a kid I saw this and had no idea what it was!

  • channel 4 logo at 00:04

  • i dont really understand how this could scare someone either, but I am not one to talk-i was terrified from the X files theme song.

  • This shit isn't scary.

  • Never scared me.

  • People are stupid. This is not one of those things you can explain, and suddenly MAKE someone experience the feelings you do. You either get scared by it or you don't.

If you're not scared, then move on. Why bitch about it?

  • People who aren't scared of this are newfags.

    The music is eerie.

  • @ManofWario Lol, right on.

  • WTF? How is this even slightly scary? The music is just some cheesy 70's jingle and the animation is just 2 squarish things. How can this scare ANYONE!?

  • Sure, this logo is from hell, but it is a Shippo sort of demon, very cute and friendly.

  • MY FREAKIN EARS

  • @AnimeFanADDICT Ya that's true, at least this is only six seconds, and not two hours or so like the movie.

  • Ok...I don't know what was more traumatic for me- watching this, or the movie "Threads".

  • @ctomarctus If it's the "Threads" I think you're referring to, then it's definitely more traumatic.

  • WUSS!

  • idk i guess this is scary if u watch it at night...alone...really LOUD

  • @SwordSmile Hm... now that I think about it, that kind of makes sense. It's not scary watching it on a YouTube page in the day, but at night, on a somewhat larger screen with no one else around in the dark, it could be a little scary.

  • Please, for the love of god, someone explain to me how this is scary. It's not that I personally don't find it scary, it's just that I can't think of any possible way this could even be thought of as scary!

  • Its intrestring how certain logos can inspire terror

  • this is scarrier than the v of doom

  • Some people are just bitter because Screen Gems killed their parents.

  • "69"

  • It wasn't the logo that scared me, it was the music when I was a kid.

  • Call me crazy, but I'm starting to think the S, especially the "eye" on it, is cute. I'm getting a vibe this logo wasn't meant to be scary. People misunderstand it, but I can sympathize logo fears, because I have/had some myself.

  • It reminds me of daytime television programming, where I would find this logo playing after a block of retro sitcoms.

  • @2000rubs -I guess so. I always thought it was regal, like a king rising from his throne.

  • whats so scary about this

  • I just realized if you look closely enough it looks like film

  • I think the "eyeball" in the center scared most people

  • I don't know either.Maybe it sounds like "Dun dun dundundindun The S from Heeeeell!" to them;D

  • Yeah, I don't get why- HOLY SHIT, IT SUMMONED ZALGO!

    -Tabris

  • look more like 69 lol

  • At first (around 1965 or 66) I thought this was a new network, not a production company.

  • Someone PLEASE tell me how this was considered scary.

  • @MiltownPunkette21 i heard this is scary to somebody. but i didn't found this scary either.

  • Was this supposed to be scary? the Playstation intro is scarier.

  • @Gunner193 oh reely nao? I find neither scary.

  • @OSDolphin

    ... I was being sarcastic.

  • this used to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid, I'd run out of the room. Makes more sense in light of my diagnosis of Asperger's, it's very assaulting from a certain perspective.

  • Heh?

  • More like Scream Gems.

  • that music gah

  • The film that was made recently about this logo was an independent comedy, a satire of conspiracy theories.

  • I don't get how this is so freaky for some people.

  • @Serithe idk either...i guess because of the awful sound starting at 0:02

  • The hammer and the pounding on the chisel and the kettle drum roll after the FBI still creeps me.

  • The "S from Hell" didn't scare me much compared to the infamous Viacom "V of Doom."

It looked like it was gonna get bigger and bigger until it swallowed you!

  • I don't get why people call this the "S from Hell".....I never found it scary.

  • I don't know either. It's a classic logo in my opinion.

  • me neither

  • some people get chills when they see this. i dont feel it myself, but i have friends who claim its creepy as hell. must be some spooky subliminal shit

  • Yeah Why do they call it that? (I can understand about why Viacom is also known as the V of Doom because it's scary AND Viacom are idiots for removing videos that DON'T have anything to do with money)

  • @MiltownPunkette21 I 100% agree with you, why do they call it "the s from hell"?

  • @MiltownPunkette21 It's referred to as a troll.

Someone takes something mundane, and claims it freaked them out. Trolling ensues.

  • @Tokopol -Interesting. :)

  • @MiltownPunkette21 Neither did I. Ironically, I used to be afraid of the MTM cat.

  • @timhomer2009 How can you be afraid of the MTM cat? Its a kitten!

Now the dead kitten varient they used for the last episode of General Hospital is a different story.

  • @UltimateDragon709

When I was little, I always found the MTM logo to be unnerving.

  • @Kemonokami I dont see how. Explain.

  • @UltimateDragon709 The Cat Dying was From The Final Episode of St. Elsewhere, Not Genaral Hospital

  • @Rusty3921 Right, well you know what I mean then.

  • @timhomer2009 How can you be afraid of the MTM cat? Its a kitten!

Now the dead kitten varient they used for the last episode of St. Elsewhere (or whatever one exsisted in the autistic kid's mind) is a different story.

  • @MiltownPunkette21 The colors of the S and the background (red and yellow respectively) represent fire, which is a trademark of the underworld. Thus, it is called the "S from Hell." But I agree that it's not so scary.

  • it's really just the eerie sounds. the S itself isn't that scary, but put the sounds against something funny, and it's still going to be scary.

  • Do I sense a Decepticon around somewhere disguised at the S from Hell?

  • Looks nyce. Much kleenr den the ofurs I've seen arownd heer.

  • Pardon me for asking, but what are you, German?

  • no, he's leet speaking.

    LOOK IT UP!

  • Actualy, I'm a girl.

  • Listening to this on low volume, it seems crazy that anyone would find this scary. Listening on high volume however, creeps the figurative shit out of me.

  • I associate this logo with being little and about to be tucked into bed. Sometimes when I can't sleep I smoke a wee bowl and watch this one. When I was a kid, it scared me, but now there's something that feels like home. And no, it's not the smoke!

  • i watched bewitched reruns on living just to see this logo!

  • You glutton for punishment, you.

  • actually it was in good quality, so it wasnt as loud, but the sythesised trumpets were still obnoxius

  • When I was young, I always thought they were magic carpets coming together...

  • carol burnett was horrifing also.......think i need another pint...somebody help me!!!!

  • That end sounds demented......

  • yes i agree...was terrorized as a child.....and am totally fucked and drink too much because of the horrer of the evil S

  • Shit that sucks. Have a cold one to help you get over it. I am. Just as an afterthought you sure it was the end symbol and not the programs associated with it???? They all look pretty fucked up to me. Mind you that bird from Bewitched would get it. Not the mum, not the daugther you know the Blonde one married to Darren.

  • Paramount's "Closet Killer" logo , the Viacom V of Doom and the S from Hell all scared me. ....

...A 6 year old boy in his steamship PJ's tucked in his Charlie Brown sheets hears these logos plotting to strangle him in his sleep in what "Art in America" Magazine would call :

    "an Arresting Commercial Image".

One theorist concluded that TV companies at this time were trying influence kids not to watch too much TV.

"This has been a Filmways presentation"

  • why is this called the S from hell? I really like this. it's nice.

  • The Early 70s: You are 6 years old and "I Dream of Jeannie" is almost over. As Jeannie blinks her last blink you realize that t bedtime is coming. It is a school night. As the catchy theme song plays while the credits roll you are sorry this show is over.

And then... the radioactive colors, the eerie music and this S shape looms in from the top and bottom of the screen ending in a crescendo of fanfare. This is the last image you take with you to bed. The S from Hell. "Goodnight".

  • You gotta see the blue mountain Paramount logo from the late '70s and '80s... that thing made me cry when I was a little kid lol

  • to aramanth -

You bring up an excellent point. I remember hearing (and seeing) these types of TV logos around age 4 or 5 - usually at night and about the time I was lingering in that funny space between awake and sleep. This is also the age when nightmares started to creep into play, and I can't speak everyone else, but I dreaded going to bed at this age simply based off of fear. This image intermingles with these fears - hence, the "S from Hell". Looking back though, its glorious!

  • I was terrified with the Viacom "V of Doom" as a child... I had to back myself up into the wall whenever it came on. I don't know why these logos have frightened so many of us in the whole wide world, but I am glad I wasn't alone!

  • Well Certain shows Will get ending like this but not all of them! But To me this one of my favorites!

  • squareing the circle

  • It reminds me of syndicated daytime television in the mid 90s.

  • Wish Screen Gems used this at the end of their movies!

  • It is a toilet paper

  • It's like a very calm, melancholy... GATE TO THE NETHERWORLD. *insert Saved By The Bell's "generic sting"*

  • Are there any other pervs out there that see it as a stylized "69"?

  • This is high pitched.

  • Word, it's about a semitone too sharp. Peace.

  • @mqg96 It's probably from a PAL tape.

  • @tokusatsunerd Your right, every single tv show or movie from america that is PAL somehow becomes high pitched.

  • Funny as a kid I never found the old screen gem trailer to be scary...in face I liked it, so much that through my life I've caught myself whistling that little tune.

I think it actually is a very soothing sound, though a bit mournful.

  • Mournful is another good word to describe the effect it gives.

  • I saw another comment that states it perfectly: it makes you feel empty. I tend to think about people who have left my life or people that are dead in the preceding show (i.e. the Bewitched comment below) when I hear the music from this.

  • I'm also a little creeped out and saddened by this when it shows on TV. When I watch Bewitched and see this, it makes me think that all those people I just watched are now dead.

  • You know, I always felt there was something a little eerie about it too. Eerie may not be the best way to describe it, but it is along those lines. I thought that I was weird, but these comments confirm that I'm not.

  • I stii get chilly looking at this. There must have been something hypnotic about those tv logos. We all can't be making this up. It does signal some type of loss associated with the shows. Maybe it's suppose to draw you back. There are 1000s of people our age who are drawn together by this logo. It is not a coincidence but a well laid out design. I don't want to sound like conspiracy guy but what else have we been programed by?

  • You are right. Ussually this came at the end of a good show followed after my bedtime. So the loss of the show and bedtime combined with this ominous satanic "S" with hypnotic eerie sounds sent a fear into me for some reason. Yeah we are not alone in this.

  • It's weird how there is this whole subculture of people who claim to be traumatized by this and other TV logos. I always loved these as a kid. Maybe because I understood even at an early age, what their purpose was.

  • what's so scary about this?!!

  • I remember this end logo coming after every episode of 'The Monkees' which I used to watch every Saturday afternoon in the early '70s.

I found the sythesized little Screen Gems tune eerie in contrast to the Monkees' upbeat end credit song: 'For Pete's Sake' (In This Generation).

The Screen Gems logo was as creepy as the Emergency Broadcast System tests ("Are the bombs on their way???")

They got a kid all happy inside with Saturday Morning cartoons then slip creepy stuff like this into the mix.

  • ahh so relaxing.

  • That's not scary. I find the music quite pleasant...

Now the V of Doom, THAT one is frightening and hilariously crappy at the same time.

  • v of doom ain't scary either!

  • This logo never scared me as A kid,the one that really terrified me was Starry Night from Night Court;anyone else?

  • Shut yo mouth, if it weren't for my interest in seeing Starry Night in action I wouldn't be a Larroquette fan now. That logo is classic.

  • when i watch movies from screen gems that logo would really show how weird it is and i am really confused of how did they made it loook scary if you would really focus on it it is scary just pay attention to it

  • How is this scary?

  • This logo to me isn't scary, even the music, because the music is in a major key.

  • What's With The 4 network bug?

  • These never really creeped me out so much as fascinated me. They always seemed so futuristic with their synth music and fancy shapes.

  • It's the Illuminati all-seeing eye in the center, plus an S straight off Hitler's SS emblem, a form of symbolic Freemason magic number 33.

  • Some of them were creepy to kids cause there is something really empty and mysterious about these logos. When I was a kid we had one for channel $ in our town and I HATED the logo. It was like this reall fat number 4 with the call letters...

  • I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who got chills when seeing this S formation. I remember watching "The Monkees" and enjoying it then seeing that creapy S thingy--wooooh!

  • Yes, I know what you mean. Though, I don't find it creepy. I find it rather soothing. But yet there's something that makes these logos somewhat scary....Oh and I used to see this logo right at the end after I watched "Bewitched". Ahh... Gotta love that show. I always hated Darrin...Lol.

  • It didn't evoke fear in me--but it did leave me with a creepy, dark, lonely and empty feeling.

Not a pleasant experience--and then your mother would tell you it's time to go to bed...and you would have to walk down that dark hallway.....

  • This logo was from "I Dream of Jeannie". I remember seeing that show since I was a kid and I was too scary for this. It was on WPIX-TV and they should air two episodes as part of the 60th anniversary of WPIX-TV next weekend.

  • I can see how people would be freaked out by this and the "V of Doom". But I've just listened to both and it wasn't really scary. The #1 scare factor is WGBH. Hands down.

  • YES!! The ALBUM version!

  • People had nightmares over this? Why?

  • People had nightmares over the SFH because they saw a bigger, less clear, and louder version of it coming over mid-60s and early 1970s vacuum tube powered TV sets and old school network transmissions. All that distorted sound and TV reception wasn't as good as what we all now take for granted. Many of us were really, really young when we saw it, too. You have to remember, the Filmstrip S has been around in some form or another since 1965.

  • I guess that makes sense but then again I always was a strange girl when I was younger.

  • The PBS one was scarier...

  • I love this logo, and the music is soothing. how can anyone be scared of this?

now the 1980s Paramount logo on the other hand.... that one used to make me cry when i was a little kid, when it would come on at the end of Cheers LOL

  • It's probably the tone quality of the last couple of notes, they have a grating, fingernails-on-chalkboard feel to them that the other notes don't have.

Not sure what's scary about the S itself. I always thought it was kinda cool.

  • The S is pretty cool. you're right about the last few notes though, they sound too sharp. The first few notes were nice. if the last notes were like that, then this would be called the S from heaven. lol

  • Exactly--the screeching of the last few notes really was freaky, but it did develop a lifelong interest in sound design and electronic music! Eric Siday was definitely a pioneer in the field. I wish there was a way to purchase recordings of his music! Peace.

  • I seem to remember hearing that he came out with some albums back in the day.

  • So funny this phenomenon of people being creeped out by closing logos. Admittedly, I was somewhat creeped out as a child sometimes, but nothing to severe, or even big enough to recall in my older age. But when searching one day for an old Warner TV logo, I discovered that there were a LOT of people afraid of these old logos when they were younger! I find it utterly fascinating!

And it must be said that TV logos of today don't compare to those of yesteryear, not in the least!

  • It wasn't on "All in the Family" or any other Norman Lear productions. The best-known shows on which it appeared were "I Dream of Jeannie," "The Monkees," "Bewitched," and "The Partridge Family."

And that music still creeps the hell out of me. And I'm 42.

  • "Double toilet paper"

  • This is the 1970 S from hell...It wasn't scary.

  • Did this logo appear at the end of early "All in the Family", "Maude", or "Sanford and Son" episodes? I gotta ask.

  • Why is that tune so catchy? DOes it just remind me of growing up?

  • This Is My Favourite Tv ident

    Its Not Scary Or Freaky.

    I Love The Music

  • me too. It's sounds so happy

  • Just imagine if Sesame Street was produced Screen Gems... then a lot more kids would've been exposed to this logo/creepy tune. lol

Announcer says: "Sesame Street has been brought to you today by the letter S... from HELL!!" *Screen Gems logo then plays, while kids everywhere scream in unison* ^.^

  • Not all kids are scared of this.

  • "while kids everywhere scream in unison", huh? Too funny...you really ought to join us on Yahoo at Club Screen Gems...you and anybody else who's a Gemfan. We love talking about SG at Club SG. Come on in!

  • how do i join???

  • if something in this is scary, its a music ^^

  • S From Hell? I don't get it. Some tv logs did scare me as a kid but I used to like the Screen Gems one.

  • I don't get it either....

  • Resident Evil

  • my eyes would tear up and get goosebumps and chills. something eerie

  • Woah shit! That happened to me too. When you get really creeped out and you're not scared, but your eyes get watery. Why?

  • man, i was 8yrs old when a news editorial intro gave me this weird feeling. but then screen gems...........daaaam this is almost an outer body expierence. not sure if but mystery of life lies within this tune. not a religous person but vivid thoughts of satan and jesus appear in my mind. circle in center of logo is earth with the hand of god and satan wrapping around it possibly

  • I was too young to remember this logo! I'm fascinated by how it scared so many young ones back in the day. I've watched this clip several times trying to figure how it could have done that. I've even heard it described by grown-ups of today who were very young back than as "The most frightening thing on TV!" I guess when you become an adult and know what frightening really means this logo looks as though it could well be your best friend! LOL!

  • Looks like the least scariest thing I've ever seen. Post the scene where Judge Doom puts the cartoon shoe into a barrel of dip and THEN we'll talk about stuff that gives kids nightmares.

  • Roger Rabbit right? That shoe dissolving in the dip is way sad.

  • Looks like a toilet paper roll.

  • sweet

  • it look like it on dvd
