if you don't understand the meaning in this scene, you need to take a step back and examine yourself. try looking past the surface, people. not everything is what it seems on the surface!
@Angeldemonboy It's the tone of wonka's voice which does it for me, and the fact they don't know where they're rowing to. Not sure what does it for other people, I guess it's the uncertainty, though if I'm in other states of mind I couldn't give a fuck.
"Wow what a lovely boat ride we're going to have! This is neat. I wonder what magical things will stumble on this time. I can't wait! It's gonna be fun! Wait what's that? Oh my... what? WTF!? AHHHHHHHH!!!"
There's no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going There's no knowing where we're rowing Or which way the river's flowing Is it raining, is it snowing Is a hurricane a-blowing Not a speck of light is showing So the danger must be growing Are the fires of Hell a-glowing Is the grisly reaper mowing Yes, the danger must be growing For the rowers keep on rowing And they're certainly not showing Any signs that they are slowing
@dasprin37 Actually, the way I see it the entire movie is an allusion to Dante's Inferno, and each individual room in the factory is a representation of one of the nine circles of hell. This scene is a representation of the river Styx or the fifth circle. Since some of the seven deadly sins are part of the nine circles, you're not entirely wrong, but lust is included, but subtly represented by the candy room. if you want, I can go into more detail
According to voters on Times Online, this is scarier than 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 'The Omen' and 'Scream' (but not quite as scary as the 'Wizard of Oz'). For some reason this never scared me much, 'Watership Down' on the other hand...
There's no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going There's no knowing where we're rowing Or which way the river's flowing Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane a-blowing? Not a speck of light is showing So the danger must be growing Are the fires of hell a-glowing? Is the grisly reaper mowing? Yes, the danger must be growing 'Cause the rowers keep on rowing And they're certainly not showing Any signs that they are slowing!
This should be what the end of the "It's a small world" ride at Disneyland is like. It'd be great if it just happened without people knowing (which direction they are going).
See this didnt scare me when i was a kid. i missed all the scary pics and i didnt listen to the song cuz i liked all the colors but now watching it now i can see how siome pppl found this inappropriate for kids. but the thing is kids dont notice it. well i didn't and i was 7 at the time so yeah
Well, have to say that this scene seems very much like the inside of your mind when mania starts to go wrong. Saying this from experience. It's a brilliant scene!
Speaking strictly in terms of the movie's universe what are the weird images supposed to represent? Something the tunnel is conjuring up to scare them? Also what does "grisly reaper mowing (moaning?) mean?
Man... this scene scared me to death when I wass 8 years old. Something about that beheading chicken just dosent set right with me. But then again maybe thats was Gene Wilders incredible acting at work
There's no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going There's no knowing where we're rowing Or which way the river's flowing Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane a-blowing? @xxchrisalicexx Thats cause political correctness has warped your mind into believeing the world is made out of marshmellows and fluffy pillows and that everyone in the world is so sensitive and kind - and doesnt swear - but if they want to you can never hear it but can only see their mouth moving :L Suprised they show this scene still when it appears on telly. I hate political correctness!
I have an interesting question. with how fast the boat is going in the tunnel, how the hell was willy wonka's hat able to stay on his head the entire time????
Suddenly you are having a good day at Candyland and the next thing you know... you are on a boat ride to hell......AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
I like this version better than the Johnney Depp version. Yes the new version is good and funny, but it just doesn't have that special something that this version has. That and the music. I always love to sing along with the songs they sing. And Willy Wonka's world seems so much better in this than the other one too. It seems so real. Like it can be. Plus I like the relationship connection between Charlie and his grandpa. It doesn't show them as music in the new one like it does in this one.
I always get so pissed off everytime they take this scene out everytime they show it on ABC Family. I don't know why they do. Maybe for timing maybe. But everytime they are about to show this scene it goes on commercial. And when it comes back on it shows that the boat ride ended and them entering in the inventing center. I always get mad because this is my upmost favorite part. That and the part with them first seeing the awesome room with the waterfall. And you can't forget the ending too. :D
The funny thing is. I watched it again for the first time in awhile on ABC Family and they actually shown the scene. I guess they might have read our complaints here on Youtube and decided to finally show it. lol. I was cheering to myself last night when the scene actually poped up. lol.
@DonZabu YES! the dangers must be growing, the propellers keep on rowing and there not showing any signs that they are slowing! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I've always thought this was funny because in such a good movie, this part seemed evil, lol. this and pure imagination are my fav songs from this movie.
This is what made the original for me, and since johnny depp is known to be a musician as well as an actor, I expected to see at the very least this song in there, but what we got was as far away from willy wonka as you can get if you ask me, it has to be real in order for it to LOOK real in this case.
this is the best scene of the movie because there is so much that it could represent. I think that the paradise of the candy room is like the younger years in life and the ride in the boat is when life keeps going and going until it randomly stops at a new destination.
I always loved how Gene Wilder would slowly raise his voice and have that crazy edge in it...Young Frankenstein is another good example I think.
Anyhow when he says that creepy poem and then raises his voice to the end and lets out that long whoooooooooooooooooooooo....DAMN that gives me chills even today! Its great!
