@ninosimone To be sure... Verrett, Hendricks, Bumbry, Grist, Sir Willard White, Kathleen Battle & Leona Mitchel Her Liu... gosh!)... the list goes on. And the Mama of them all... Marian Anderson.
Jessye Norman... my word! Just magnificent... magnificent...
Go head Ms. Price! I liked the discussion about prejudice and the emotion in her voice. My family is from the south as well, and I recognize her sentiment very well...
When I was a young student I got to turn pages for one of her concerts. Amazing, it maid me want to stop turning pages and sit in the audience because I was missing too much. God what a voice of seamless singing it was
@sirenadellopera I wondered the same thing. I think she means that it's a form of prejudice when critics bring up her race in reviews--or maybe when they compare her to other black singers. That's my guess.
@sirenadellopera I think she means this--that to talk about a new singer as the "New Leontyne price" or about another black singer as "Not as good as Leontyne Price" or , for that matter, to assert that "Leontyne Price is the greatest Africa-American soprano" is to focus on a racial category, rather than the full category in which the person being referred to SHOULD BE judged. Pigeon-holing based on race--even when it's meant to be a compliment--that too is prejudice.
What she says reveals what a tremendous person she is. What her colleagues say about her reveals even more. People like Sherrill Milnes, Marilyn Horne, and Shirley Verrett--their praise of her is uniform.
Leontyne Price makes some classic statements in this 'interview', especially: "the world is better....the world has a pretty good Diva". She is an Afro-American, and her contribution to her art is important; as it is to the world of opera. TY for posting R.
Thanks for reposting this. Denyce Graves said that to hear Leontyne Price sing is to hear the voice of God. I would like to add that to hear her speak is to hear His wisdom.
@sketL I wish so much that you all could have been at the 1981 Met Opera Trovatores that she sang with Giuseppe Giacomini. They were, in my esteem, the greatest nights she ever had in her entire career. The voice, mature but completely firm, was a personal gift indescribable in its melody and beauty, to each member of the audience. She had perfected that role in a way that Verdi would have loved by her devotion to all that the score offers a singer of her capacity.
I LOVE HER,I WORSHIP HER

@sketL And that is saying something, because Ms. Graves is pretty close to that level herself.. My goodness what voices on these women!
