Maybe it is, maybe it isnt. I cant really say, but you have to remember that you can put bodykit after you buy a car (thing you cannot do in Gran turismo (You can in forza ;) ))
I don't know why the series is so dumbed down. All of the characters act like average joes instead of actual gearheads. It's not like a supercharger is simply better than a turbo. They have different torque characteristics and horsepower distribution over the tacho. On a drag, you can look at top speed and overall acceleration. With touge, there's a lot more to it.
The purpose of the series isn't to be some sort of semieducational show on how to tune and drive a touge racer; if it got too technical, would people watch it? I think not. To me, Initial D isn't about just the cars, it's about how the people behind the wheel grow and change. I think that's partially why Takumi is such an appealing character, because he's completely clueless about the technical side, he just wants to drive, for the most part.
His point is that the series isn't about the technical aspect of racing...
Besides, it's an anime... if you want to hear about the in-debt detailed descriptions of an engine and it's upgrades go watch specialized programs.. if you keep watching Initial-D just enjoy the show and stop complaining about this kind of thing.
