You're from Brazil? The word for mandolin is "bandolim", not "bandolin". In the summer of 2009, not long after this video was taken I attended the annual Mandolin Symposium in Santa Cruz, California where I took a lot of classes on Choro music. The instructors were Dudu Maia and Danilo Brito, some of the best Choro players in Brasil today. I've heard of Armandinho Macedo, and seen some videos of him playing. He's awesome!

Yes, it's in the standard mandolin tuning. To help you out, it's in the key of A and it's all based around an A chord shape. When you started playing mandolin, maybe you learned how to play a G on the top 3 strings like:
E|----3---
A|----2---
D|----5---
G|----7---
I just move this entire shape up two frets and switch the fingers around a little bit so it's an A instead of a G. I'm not playing the E string in the beginning.... that doesn't even come in until the bridge.
Also, if you're trying to play along with the recording, it's not going to work. The pitch on the recording is not exactly in A and it was changed with either a variable tape speed or just not being perfectly tuned to 440 Hz A in the first place. I hope that helps. Try to play along with me and not the Beatles recording if you want to sound in tune.

I play ukulele, and I can get a good Mandolin off of a friend for a good price. I was wondering if it would be worth it to learn this instrument if I already play Uke.
Mandolin and uke are completely different. The tunings are different, the material of the strings are different, the size is different, etc. Mandolin is played with a pick, ukuleles are strummed and plucked with the fingers. Chord shapes are different. Mandolin's strings are in pairs, uke's are not. Almost everything about these two instruments are different. I say just get all the instruments you can, like I do! I have a uke, too. :)

@CGiordano464 the Country band Diamond Rio has a alot of good mandolin in ther sngs. It would be need to see someone do a vdersion of like " What a Beautiful Mess" or some rolling stones or i dont know anything thats 30 70s rock and roll or some modern country
@CGiordano464 A few years back I recorded a version of Under My Thumb where I used mandolin for the main melody and hand claps and claves for the rhythm. Twas fun.
D'Addario strings are the standard sets for mandolin players all around the world. They're good, if not great (they're the standard for a reason). Martin & Co. puts out a nice set, and Elixir strings are very good as well.
Maybe it's only me, but I can't stand Elixirs. They are way to bright and slippery. Sure they last longer than other strings, but I can't stand the way they feel and sound. I'll gladly pay less for something that sounds better to me.
@fredalan It is a Kentucky km-675. It's a $700 mandolin that I got for $420 on ebay, very slightly used. It is a fantastic mandolin for the price. I even had a very famous mandolin builder (Randy Woods) tell me that it's one of the best sounding Kentuckys he's ever heard (and he has heard a lot, I'm sure). I've had it for about 4 years and I would love to upgrade to an American or Canadian-made model. I'm looking at Muth, actually.
No idea. It's a piece of crap camera. I guess they thought it would be a good idea to have some auto-focus........ so people who are too lazy to figure out how to use a focus don't have to work too hard. Why they thought that was a good idea, I don't know.

@sosome57 I can't read music. I would love to be able to, but I don't find it completely necessary at the moment. I find great respect for anyone that can read, but you have to understand the convenience of tablature to some people.
I play by ear, too, to some extent. Have picked up a lot of irish music that way. I like my music though. Working on some Bach right now. Couldn't do it without the music. You're arrangement is even better now that I know you learned it by ear. Like I said, I'll have to slow your video down and figure out what you're doing. Great arrangement. Much better than the others I've heard!
@DubyaREX02 Tabs are great, but if you play by ear, I really think you should go into music. Cause to be a great musician you must train your ear to recognize different voices and pitches in polyphonic melodies. and you have a head start on it. That's really cool man! Oh and great video.

You're from Brazil? The word for mandolin is "bandolim", not "bandolin". In the summer of 2009, not long after this video was taken I attended the annual Mandolin Symposium in Santa Cruz, California where I took a lot of classes on Choro music. The instructors were Dudu Maia and Danilo Brito, some of the best Choro players in Brasil today. I've heard of Armandinho Macedo, and seen some videos of him playing. He's awesome!

Are you in standard tuning? because I've been sitting here watching this video over and over trying to figure out how you play it and when I play it, it doesn't sound right

Yes, it's in the standard mandolin tuning. To help you out, it's in the key of A and it's all based around an A chord shape. When you started playing mandolin, maybe you learned how to play a G on the top 3 strings like:
E|----3---
A|----2---
D|----5---
G|----7---
I just move this entire shape up two frets and switch the fingers around a little bit so it's an A instead of a G. I'm not playing the E string in the beginning.... that doesn't even come in until the bridge.

Also, if you're trying to play along with the recording, it's not going to work. The pitch on the recording is not exactly in A and it was changed with either a variable tape speed or just not being perfectly tuned to 440 Hz A in the first place. I hope that helps. Try to play along with me and not the Beatles recording if you want to sound in tune.

I play ukulele, and I can get a good Mandolin off of a friend for a good price. I was wondering if it would be worth it to learn this instrument if I already play Uke.

Mandolin and uke are completely different. The tunings are different, the material of the strings are different, the size is different, etc. Mandolin is played with a pick, ukuleles are strummed and plucked with the fingers. Chord shapes are different. Mandolin's strings are in pairs, uke's are not. Almost everything about these two instruments are different. I say just get all the instruments you can, like I do! I have a uke, too. :)

the tabs! I would buy the tabs , please save your soul for whats really important! I have figured out part of this but it would be so much easier if I had the tabs....
I like a challenge too but this one is over my head. I think it would be a challenge even with the tabs... I keep coming back to listen over and over, you really are awesome on this song!

@CGiordano464 the Country band Diamond Rio has a alot of good mandolin in ther sngs. It would be need to see someone do a vdersion of like " What a Beautiful Mess" or some rolling stones or i dont know anything thats 30 70s rock and roll or some modern country

I play by ear. Most guitar tabs are incorrect, anyway, so I don't bother with them.

I'm a beginner, so I'm not really sure what is a good brand to get.

D'Addario strings are the standard sets for mandolin players all around the world. They're good, if not great (they're the standard for a reason). Martin & Co. puts out a nice set, and Elixir strings are very good as well.

Maybe it's only me, but I can't stand Elixirs. They are way to bright and slippery. Sure they last longer than other strings, but I can't stand the way they feel and sound. I'll gladly pay less for something that sounds better to me.

What make/model is the mandolin? Very good sound to it. I'm trying to get ideas of what to get myself.

@fredalan It is a Kentucky km-675. It's a $700 mandolin that I got for $420 on ebay, very slightly used. It is a fantastic mandolin for the price. I even had a very famous mandolin builder (Randy Woods) tell me that it's one of the best sounding Kentuckys he's ever heard (and he has heard a lot, I'm sure). I've had it for about 4 years and I would love to upgrade to an American or Canadian-made model. I'm looking at Muth, actually.

No idea. It's a piece of crap camera. I guess they thought it would be a good idea to have some auto-focus........ so people who are too lazy to figure out how to use a focus don't have to work too hard. Why they thought that was a good idea, I don't know.
And thanks. I should rerecord this, I play it a little bit differently now and better I think.

@sosome57 I can't read music. I would love to be able to, but I don't find it completely necessary at the moment. I find great respect for anyone that can read, but you have to understand the convenience of tablature to some people.
Then there's the rest of us who play by ear....

I play by ear, too, to some extent. Have picked up a lot of irish music that way. I like my music though. Working on some Bach right now. Couldn't do it without the music. You're arrangement is even better now that I know you learned it by ear. Like I said, I'll have to slow your video down and figure out what you're doing. Great arrangement. Much better than the others I've heard!

@DubyaREX02 Tabs are great, but if you play by ear, I really think you should go into music. Cause to be a great musician you must train your ear to recognize different voices and pitches in polyphonic melodies. and you have a head start on it. That's really cool man! Oh and great video.

anyways how long do you think it would take me to learn how to read sheet music? I really want to learn eventually.
how long would you estimate for a 19 year old kid, with about a 1300 reading lexile, a b+ average college student to learn how to read sheet music? is it hard?
