@smithdsmit It is interesting how Garfield's and McKinley's assassinations are overlooked. Maybe it's because they were killed by random nuts (a crazy man in Garfield's case, an anarchist in McKinley's) as opposed to Lincoln's killer, who was associated with a cause. Plus Lincoln was the first President to be assassinated and was quite famous at the time. Garfield had only been in office for 1 1/2 years. McKinley had already served a term; he should be more well-known than he is.

Guiteau was clearly delusional and insane. If he'd only wounded him he might have been sent to an asylum instead of prison.The theory is he killed Garfield in revenge for not giving him a government post. Those were the days before Civil Service & most federal jobs were given out by whatever admninstration was in power (the practice was known as patronage). The establishment of the federal government's Civil Service was due in a large part to Garfield's assasination.

And everyone would say "where were you when you heard the president was killed?" Then ABC, NBC, and CBS would replay every second of footage countless times. My comment was not 'anti-american". But more of a comment on the american media which really plays such things up. Remember Ronald Reagan being shot? I can't count the number of times i saw the slow motion replay going over every single aspect of it. The media loved this and kept replaying in slow motion for weeks.

Oswald had an escape plan, and he did escape momentarily. He was detained later, but actually escaped the scene back to his house. On the way I believe he killed a cop who stopped him.

Booth (Lincoln's assassin also had an escape plan). Ironically enough, Booth ran into a warehouse from a theater, and Oswald ran into a theater from a warehouse.

Well Oswald left all but $14 to his wife the morning of the assassination. After the shooting he was flagging down a bus between stops and taking a cab, hardly a thought-out escape plan...with $14.

I didn't include Booth on my list because he really did have one thought out...not very good, but a plan.

Amazingly, even though he was shot, Roosevelt gave his speech! After the speech was over, he went to the hospital. His shirt , eyeglass case and the pages of the speech...all with a bullet hole through them, are on display at TR's birthplace/museum in New York City.
