Herod's Temple was a disturbing temple because it was a ROMAN TEMPLE. It even had a Roman Eagle over its gate into the Court of Israel. I bet it also had nikes (angels) on the corners of its roof bearing tropaeums (crosses). A quick image google of the Synagogue in Dura-Europos would reveal that 3rd Century Jews believed this temple had Roman Temple architecture.
