Why isn't there a better fail-safe built into these reactors? I don't claim to be an expert in the nuclear power field, but I know there are boron rods inserted between the fuel rods to absorb neutrons, which helps regulate and slow the reactions. @PenguinJr1994 yes and they may be affected buy the solar flare. if that's the case the pumps needed to pump the water to keep the cores cool may not work.realize that once the reaction starts it takes a long time to stop and cool down. so if the main system shuts down they you have the backup pumps and if their affected and cant keep the core cool you have a meltdown.
