So many of the great ones are gone, Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Dina Washington, Ella Fiztgerald, Etta James, Billie Holliday. Thank God we still have Aretha and she's better than ever. I just love her dog gone it!
Everything is in sync, from Aretha, to the piano, the drums, the horns ... to the outstanding background vocals. Every note is with precision and excellence. A nurtured and matured craft.
Blow Ree, Aretha oh you were about it then, and baby you were fine? The lyrics were so awesome and spoke volumes about a relationship. This is a masterpiece, and no one should try to sing this classic song. I don't care, who? The emotional songs of yesterday had substance, nowadays, it is just words spoken or song. The times of past were about real romance, not this nasty, freakish stuff we have today.
@kallekaskas It's still there. I mean, artists like Adele still make well-made, emotional songs. While you shouldn't forget masterpieces like this song, you also shouldn't let nostalgia cloud your mind and prevent you from appreciating good modern music.
@Politoed89 Have to agree with you. Amazing song. Wish I could have lived in the 60's when music was music and there was a thing called talent. Very rare these days... well in the mainstream at least.
What is that sound at 2:15 faintly in the background? Houston's voice? an instrument? It trips me out everytime I hear it! Beautiful touch whatever/whoever it is.
AMEN AMEN AMEN! PURE talent! In the day there was NO machine for making this sound like this! They could help voice it but they couldn't fix it like today
The sheer amount of nostalgia here is unreal, I'm sure in 40 years time it will be Aguilera who will be viewed the way Aretha Franklin is now. Do we really need to put down a current artist, who does happen to have an absolutely amazing vocal talent, in order to make the legendary Aretha Franklin seem unbeatable? Christina is todays vocal prodigy just as Aretha was back in her time, both are amazing don't bash a current artist for paying tribute to a great!
@xomeghanxox So true! We should enjoy that we actually have some singers today who has raw talent and no need for autotune. No need to like their music but people these days won't like to admit some other artist than their favourite has talent.
my choir director taught me how to sing this song ^-^ i was happy and now im gonna ask him to help me with it some more so i can audition for the school talent show
Examples of soulful women vocalists, Aretha, Etta James, Bessie Smith, Billy Holiday, Mary J Blidge, Amy Winehouse. These women have what is called emotional depth, they are artists. I do not consider people like Christina Aguilara, Brittney Spears, Lady gaga to be artists in this sense. They are more like trained monkeys with lipstick, which is a shame because they do have talent, but it is squandered on their lack of insight and need to be payed attention to.
@nenuttz what?? you compare christina aguilera to britney and lady gaga? are you crazy?? christina is a real artist!!! aretha franklin etta james Praise christina aguilera many times! so shut up
@nenuttz Aguilera is actually one of the few artists today who has soul in their voice. I don't know any other female artist from this generation that has been praised as much by the legendary artists(celine dion, whitney houston, patti labelle, aretha franklin etc)as Christina.. People can hate her way of singing but her voice is still one in a billion. I agree britney(can't even sing) and gaga are just singers who can pull off some crappy pop but Christina has done blues/jazz/pop/rock/electro.
Oh please. Mary J. definitely has soulful chops. Why else would Aretha appear on records with her if she didn't think she was great? If you think Whitney is great too... I have video clips of Whitney is saying that Mary is her favorite singer because she is so soulful and expressive. Just because someone is a classic doesn't mean that you can be a total snob to newer generations of musicians. Maybe if we encouraged them instead of putting them down we could see them blossom into greatness.
@Tajiloh I wouldn't say Mary J is the most soulful female in the business though ,just one of the most popular. There are better soul singers out there that just are not as big.Nikka Costa for example. Purist forms of soul are snobbed though now or even blues ,although I love Amy Winehouse.
@Breniznit Well she's definitely popular. I do think she has soul though... it's just soul music combined with hip-hop. So it has a different flavor. I do love Amy Winehouse though! So sad that she died T_T
I still finding & discovering the great voices. Aretha is one of those voices I've come across. The feeling, the true emotion in her voice can make one cry! This is my one of my favorite songs of hers. There are no tricks to her voice, no studio enhancements, reverb or anything! This is a gift from GOD himself!
Christina Aguilera has nothing on this. She may have the pipes but as an artist, she conveys no emotion, which is the point of art in the first place.
@nenuttz Agreed. Christina's voice possesses no amount of storytelling ability; she just seems to maniacally and obnoxiously scream at the top of her throat. Aretha (the greatest singer in the history of American music) possesses vocal talents that are far beyond the capabilities of any average human being... period.
Some people may call me a youngster because I am 20, but I know music and this is REAL MUSIC! Not to many of today's artist can bring up deep emotions like this song does to their listeners.
@elei5 yuck! Christina was flat the entire time besides I could whistle xtina under the table any time,it's not as impressive as a belt and Aretha belts alot.
@jeffcfe I don't think that's Cissy Houston. It's Aretha's cousin ...search this song in YouTube and you'll see her perform it live with her cousin singing it live also & she still sounded clear as a bell.
@dreamboynyc2 Also Whitney Houston has talked about her mom recording this with Aretha, so its been common knowledge for those who know the Atlantic records legacy of Aretha and The Sweet Inspirations.
If you're with someone who doesn't love/appreciate you back after all you do for them, give it up; don't waste your time trying to force your love on them.
To be honest back then raw talent was king. They didn't have the technology to clean up vocals. They had to be pitch perfect every time. Sure there are singers who are this talented. But since they aren't as camera friendly as say Rhianna they will never sing anywhere beyond their church choirs, and for them, that's fine.

We know Aretha is the true QUEEN OF SOUL.....but i got to give Cissy Houston her props....she could produce the most angelic sounds. Cissy was awesome in her prime.
if you know anything about Amber/ Mercedes she loves Aretha. Her Biggest influence and her inspiration. She sings her song to pay homage to it. Like how fanous artist cover other artist's work.
lets not lie about it amber riley did a damn good job singing this song. lets give credit to where credit is due. of course know one can out do the original singer but she did a good job.
Little sister Carolyn sat down one evening and wrote one of my favorite songs of any singer and she also wrote Angel another favorite of mine....GO LITTLE SISTER CAROLYN!
@lIlI8 This girl might have cool voice ( I appreciate that), but when she does HER song I'll like her and admire her voice.. since than keep off the covers !!!
If you really heard that song because of that Glee performance- SHAME ON YOU!
Are people seriously that dumb? I'm sure even Amber understands she cannot top Ms. Aretha. I understand Amber is an incredible singer however you cannot compare. You guys shouldn't even mention her here.
By the way, after Aretha said, "AIn't No Way" the word "Ain't" and phrase entered the mainstream ... and it had to ... because folks realized that there was no other way to say it with such powerfully right-on-target emphasis.
All you high and mighty asses who bitch about how people came about to like this song really need to get those sticks out your asses. Who the hell cares how someone came about liking this song? What matters is that they like it enough to even look up the original. Maybe if you got off your pedestals and just listened to the music, no matter where it comes from, you'd realize that.
@sassyjurphy Amber Riley knows she cannot compete with Aretha. Everyone knows that. Amber is just paying tribute to an artist she clearly admires and respects. Why can't people understand that?
Much props to Rolling Stone for recognizing sister Aretha as the greatest singer of all time. forgive me but how did Donna Summer not make it to at least 100 I mean, that ability to do gospel, rock, dance, country, techno, jazz, opera, island music, I have never seen that kind of musical transendence. but its cool they got number one right! Donna Summer!
this song makes me so sad but in a good way. not sure if anyone really 'gets' that. it breaks my heart yet fills my soul with such emotion that I wanna go and find the kinda love she sings about. the hurts so good kinda love. the makes you wanna slap yourself kinda love. LOVE this song. one of Miss Aretha's B-E-S-T. thanks for posting this gem of a classic.
Aretha, Gladys, Dionne, Phyllis, all have/had natural gifted voices and none of today's imitators can compare, including Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Fantasia, Toni Braxton and Jennifer Hudson. The present day singers are excellent singers,,but they lack the soul to carry songs like the masters listed above. I don't think we will ever see the likes of Aretha, Gladys, Dionne, Phyllis, Patti, Natalie and Whitney again. Just keeping it real.
@justonemoment1 I agree, but I think the songs, music and musical arrangement are to blame, more than the artists. If today's music producers/arrangers had the same passion (and expertise) as back then (60's, 70's), I believe a lot of the "imitators" you mentioned would rise up a level. Image what an album by any of those "imitators" would sound like, if Stevie Wonder (or Prince) wrote/played/produced/arranged everything? Yeah :-)
@justonemoment1 there are some talented soulful singers still around (Chrisette Michelle, Jazmine Sullivan, plenty more...)...they're just underrated. They don't get play time like the artists you've mentioned.
@justonemoment1 you see to aretha like a god because she has a lot of years singing... she is amazing i know, but wait a years and you'll say the same about christina aguilera, mariah carey and jennifer hudson! peace! :)
the best of soul from the still reigning Queen of Soul... I agree, how can anyone dislike this amazing soul record, a benchmark of Soul, perhaps for decades to come. Love you, Aretha
Why are people on here beating up on Amber Riley (who does a most credible version of this song)?...Has anybody noticed that three absolute legends Patty LaBelle, Whitney Houston and Jean Carn are also covering this tune? They aren't claiming to outdo Aretha either...but they don't have to make any claims. They are legends in their own right. I agree with those who say just enjoy the performances of these great talents. There''s only one Aretha
Ugh...Just listen to all of you Glee Stans....Just shut the fuck up and listen to the damn song....Glee is shit, and the fact that it took a garbage program like that to bring you here means you were never ready in the first place....
Okay people. Stop bashing Amber Riley for singing this song. I honestly don't think she sang it to try to outdo Aretha. She sang the song because she just loves to sing. She knows she's not Aretha, but she has potential to become someone legendary. Why can't we just appreciate both of these amazing singers instead of trying to put them down?
I doubt that Amber Riley thinks she's better than Aretha Franklin. In fact, I think she was probably honoured to sing one of Aretha's biggest hits, which made thousands of people all over the world aware of the beauty of the Queen of Soul's music. Music isn't about competition. Well, the industry might be, but the songs speak in their own rights, and you shouldn't need to compare every single version to find "the best" one. Just enjoy the sounds.
Step aside and let the Queen of Soul reign among the few original divas we have left...you go Aretha! Nobody can hit the notes and do her songs justice. I am glad to see young people being influcenced by this womans God given talent....
OMG OMG, always wondered who that is wus signing in background... song always make me cry when i don't know i am... send chills up the back of my scalp... Lord its all the way from heaven an beyond...
Aretha - Queen Of Soul, Amber - Singer; but please stop comparing the two. We have different opinions, and for me Amber sang it better than the queen. I don't say Aretha's not good, I just loved Amber's version more! They're both great singers (NO DOUBT) So those who hates me now, go sing it like Amber or Aretha!!
This is ARETHA'S song written by ARETHA'S sister and ARETHA had the hit with it. I won't argue with anyone on You Tube, and especially in this instance, I don't have to . Right is right. ROCK AND ROLL AND SOUL ARE HERE TO STAY!
I don't get people's comments. If Aretha and Mercedes were here, they'd sure have lots more respect for each other than what you guys have goin' on here. They're both queens in their own right, so why don't you haters get lost, coz the only ones that ain't gonna get respect is you!
I don't know who Mercedes is but I know damn well she can't, won't and will NEVER touch this damn woman!!! Aretha doesn't have to give respect to ANYONE because NO ONE will EVER touch her PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Glee brought you here then maybe you should leave out of here! Glee does cover songs, if it wasn't for artists like Aretha, Glee School would be Pee school!
lol 11 dislikes? shit AINT NO WAY

Amber is a good singer & her tribute to Aretha was very good too but NO ONE could ever beat the QUEEN. Just deal with it.
Gabyevo 6 months ago 3
By the way, after Aretha said, "AIn't No Way" the word "Ain't" and phrase entered the mainstream ... and it had to ... because folks realized that there was no other way to say it with such powerfully right-on-target emphasis.

When Aretha sang like this, everybody had to stop in their tracks and listen humbly and lovingly. Much respect!

All you high and mighty asses who bitch about how people came about to like this song really need to get those sticks out your asses. Who the hell cares how someone came about liking this song? What matters is that they like it enough to even look up the original. Maybe if you got off your pedestals and just listened to the music, no matter where it comes from, you'd realize that.
sassyjurphy 6 months ago
@sassyjurphy Amber Riley knows she cannot compete with Aretha. Everyone knows that. Amber is just paying tribute to an artist she clearly admires and respects. Why can't people understand that?
sassyjurphy 6 months ago

Just keeping it real.
justonemoment1 6 months ago 27
@justonemoment1 Just because previous singers were amazing it doesn't mean the new ones that come along are imitators.
NinjaGrace 4 months ago 3
@justonemoment1 I agree, but I think the songs, music and musical arrangement are to blame, more than the artists. If today's music producers/arrangers had the same passion (and expertise) as back then (60's, 70's), I believe a lot of the "imitators" you mentioned would rise up a level. Image what an album by any of those "imitators" would sound like, if Stevie Wonder (or Prince) wrote/played/produced/arranged everything? Yeah :-)
bourgeoisbrats 4 months ago 3
@justonemoment1 there are some talented soulful singers still around (Chrisette Michelle, Jazmine Sullivan, plenty more...)...they're just underrated. They don't get play time like the artists you've mentioned.

This song is one of the most magnificent pieces of music ever layed down on wax...period!!!
brojdub 6 months ago
Okay people. Stop bashing Amber Riley for singing this song. I honestly don't think she sang it to try to outdo Aretha. She sang the song because she just loves to sing. She knows she's not Aretha, but she has potential to become someone legendary. Why can't we just appreciate both of these amazing singers instead of trying to put them down?

Glee version is NOT better nothings better than the original
Skuxdeluxcheeseburga 6 months ago

Now I know why it´s called SOUL from 2:33 to 3:14, it´s like Mozart you just listen and the music touches you as just genious can.
You need to feel deep in your soul and hearth and have an angel voice to be the Queen of Soul. Thank You Aretha.
fjgptq 7 months ago
This is ARETHA'S song written by ARETHA'S sister and ARETHA had the hit with it. I won't argue with anyone on You Tube, and especially in this instance, I don't have to . Right is right. ROCK AND ROLL AND SOUL ARE HERE TO STAY!
simon4186 7 months ago
I don't get people's comments. If Aretha and Mercedes were here, they'd sure have lots more respect for each other than what you guys have goin' on here. They're both queens in their own right, so why don't you haters get lost, coz the only ones that ain't gonna get respect is you!
NoSenseiProductions 7 months ago 3
@NoSenseiProductions
I don't know who Mercedes is but I know damn well she can't, won't and will NEVER touch this damn woman!!! Aretha doesn't have to give respect to ANYONE because NO ONE will EVER touch her PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
