Proof of the way mutations gain new uses and lead to new species. Do you know about mudskippers, fish who spend part of their time out of water? Many fish flip and flop from one mud puddle or stream cut-off to another. Mudskippers have fins that allow them to walk, after a fashion. Not as dramatic, but cool.
I hope nature pressures it to fly higher and further so it can attain true flight. Then in all the major animal domains, flight will have evolved (insects, mammals, birds (hurr), reptiles and then fish). Maybe in the past, some fish had already attained flight. but untill we find some fossils it's just wishful thinking. I don't know of any flying crustaceans although there is some sort of spider that can "sail" in the wind for short distances. (what is short on a spiders scale?)
You probably know ALL about them by now but in Barbados you can have them every morning for breakfast. I'm sure I've seen dried / shaped / painted skins of Flying Fish in shops out there that you can buy for a couple of dollars (like the dry Puffer Fish you get). Would make a nice holiday... But local artists just might not bother making them anymore.

I've actually seen this whilst fishing from a tinny.
They were trying to escape a few dolphins which were , breaching and diving through a large group of squid.
Hard to say for sure, but the squid were so closely packed I reckon the dolphins were also swimming circles around the squid to keep them compressed and panicked.some of the bigger/faster squid were getting a good 2 metres out of the water.
I caught these guys helping pilot a ferry off Cape Canaveral, and by caught I mean with my hands, while on deck, 'cause these buggers were jumping through the ferry.
They taste like Baltic herring. Great with mustard, and before you get pissy with me about eating these beautiful creatures I was on the first leg of a 10,000+km trip so fishing was quite mandatory.

@fuunguus Who the longer they need to stay out of the water away from their predaotrs, the more likely one of the will have random mutation that helps it survive and benefits the group in way that they can fly MUCH farther than they do now. That would be cool.

If these fishes just had lungs their evolutionary path could take to them to the sky and really become flying fishes! Such a species would be sooo extraordinary! But I doubt they will evolve lungs any time soon.

@fuunguus Who the longer they need to stay out of the water away from their predaotrs, the more likely one of the will have random mutation that helps it survive and benefits the group in way that they can fly MUCH farther than they do now. That would be cool.

First off - you sound exactly like one of my friends, and since I can picture him saying this it's even more hilarious ^_^
Second - I can believe you didn't know about them. CAN. Unless you run into the scenario in a conversation, or playing Super Mario Bros (I asked how the fish jumped so high) it's fairly unlikely you'd look this sort of thing up.
