  • I would hate to have to sight read this solo from sheet music... All those polyrythms and linear drumming are incredible!

  • cobus is way better people say travis orbin is beter but he really isn't

  • @Testifyrocks oh yes let's compare to different and subjective styles of drumming

  • @Testifyrocks dude ...cobus is nothing compared to him o_o

  • it's crazy how you can do that bass groove with such a straight face. i might look like i'm taking a massive shit if i even attempted it...killer drummin, good sir!

  • This was nearly 6 years ago, and it's so amazing to see how much you've gotten EVEN better!

    Inspiring :]

  • You, sir, are a beast, but can you crack THREE cymbals with ONE swing of the stick? That's what it means to be a drummer.

  • Film a better quality solo please! I'd like to see the madness in hd!

  • Dude, don't cut your hair.

  • the kick drum ostinato with the displacement was awesome. Not that the rest wasn't but that really stuck out to me

  • HEY TRAVIS IS ME foREVer from steam! great solo :D

  • Jesus Christ

  • Hey there Travis. This is a cool video. I was wondering, if at the time one of your influences was Mike Mangini? Also, When did you start drumming?

  • nice, i've been dying to see a cover of either matrix gate or alien hip hop from planet x, you've definitely got what it takes to play that!

  • Awesome playing AND a Train Of Thought shirt. Couldn't be better.

  • After the first hits, did anyone else think of Bow Down by Born of Osiris?

  • @stevo946 YES HAHA

  • Left side heavy with the audio?

  • I like his set up, mine is similar. And its cool how he doesn't have some riderless large kit with 20 cymbals, and dose not do psychotic double bass every beat. Keep it up travis.

  • it's all feet on this vid... not as impressive

  • @Coltsfan2295 hahaha!

  • hmmm, from 1:24 to around 3:08 kind of reminds me somthing that thomas lang would do, i like it.

  • You're a monster, Trav. Kudos to yudos! Keep playing like it's your life! I'm going to be looking at more of your stuff.

Your kit set-up reminds me of Bill Bruford's current set-up.

  • Talk about coordination. Shit...

  • This is amazing stuff, Travis. Do you have any advice for building this level of 4 way independence that you have achieved?

  • Your foot coordination is amazing on top of your accents with the right and left. Definite avant garde drum solo.

  • you would def have a chance in gcs drum off

  • man those feet just keep on goin for days, christ your multitasking blows my mind

  • travi orbin is best drummer in the holy fuckin world

  • Sounds very 'Mike mangini' influenced in parts :)

  • wow, youve gotten a lot better in the past 4 years :D

  • How do get your EXR kick to sound like that?

  • is that a dream theater by any chance?

  • Face = Win

  • Super technical and super awesome.

  • "Kinda Virgil Donati like" Cool

  • @loungerodder but no one gets travis´.

  • mike mangini ish.. im diggin it

  • you should really look into drum clinics or drum demos. haha. great job!

  • You got more chops than a butcher, man!

  • The only thing that makes this video better is the vuvuzela button!!!!

  • i did a cover of giants in the ocean, i love his drum beats

  • Are you playing skinamarinkadinky dink on your bass drum at one point? 0:43

  • i think of every song by travis orbin a drum solo

  • real nice make it look real fluid i love how u make ur snare drum sound almost like two different drums...real nice

  • I must've watch this at least 15-20 times by now, and I feel inspired every time.

  • your awsome

  • Your legs are definitely made from stone or some intense alien hardware. I'm seriously in pain from 1:23 to 3:06 just listening.

  • not bad keep it up bra....

  • guau!!

  • the part when u dropped the stick was the best part XD beast pedals but that was a killer ending

  • holy crap fix the pan

  • nice foot work on those bass pedals

  • so at 1:23 when u do the straight herta stuff on double bass do u even pay attention to your feet? u are seriously coordinated holy crap

  • when u do another drum solo?

  • nice, AAXtreme China, great choice.

  • Hey Travis you are a great musician when it come to drum set :]! I was wandering if you had any rudimental history or any note reading chops like on marimba. Thanks :] Keep doing what you're doing. : ]

  • whoa man. mind boggling stuff right there. good job :D

  • Travis is the special ops of drumming...highly trained, elite, and can chop you up in 1 million ways with his sticks....good stuff Travis always fun to listen too!!!!!!

  • Haha niiice. Thank you!!

  • @shaftninja why u sayin ty? ur not travis orbin...

  • @cjeclypto

you...my friend... are STUPID!! of course he's travis

  • At 5:13

    Mangini?

Anyways, you are one of the best drummers out there, in my opinion atleast.

  • Mad skills. kinda boring to watch, but fantastic drummer.

  • ..boring? Are we watching the same video?

  • quintuplets in the beginning huh?

    I'm impressed :D

  • You must not be a drummer.

  • It's applied in the music Travis plays, though. But I guess if it's not your style, I understand why you think this. I personally think many drummers that use polyrhythms such as Travis and Danny Carey use them in a very musical way. This solo might not be so "musical" but his playing with Periphery and Sky Eats Airplane certainly is.

  • never heard them so i cant say anything about that.. but i hope this complex stuff has some musical ideas behind it.

thats cool! as a solo tho.. not my cup of tea

  • its old school, like if buddy rich had double kicks. 10/ 10 on technicality

  • stfuXdonny and teddyspringoaks, you don't know anything. This drum solo is a technical masterpiece. Just because it doesn't flow doesn't mean it isn't good. in fact, it is more difficult to play a beat that is very complex rather than being fast or sounding nice.

  • I agree. As proficient as he is, this solo doesn't do much to hold your attention. This guy really is a good drummer though. Keep in mind this video is almost three years old as well. Check out the videos of him doing stuff for Sky Eats Airplane for better performances.

  • 4:48 til the end is crazy

  • the double bass sounds reminds me of Hot For Teacher by Van Halen, lol

  • yar right! it's the same sound :D

  • Well, people don't seem to understand this isn't supposed to flow like a Dennis Chambers solo.

It's a technical solo, a very technical one.

    Well done, sir.

  • 2:48 to 307 blew my mind

  • your bass sounds like an old car muffler

  • ahahaha

  • @snaredrummer1394 haha omg so true! I love it!

  • this is dope. that's a weird ass setup though

  • I may be wrong, but i can see that mangini was one of your influences right?!

The way that you hold your stick and the some beats reminds me of him

  • @Maruceroooo Travis even uses his sticks, so I'm pretty sure Mangini is one of his (main) influences.

  • really strange, but, not bad at all

    nice work man.

  • u should do some born of osiris covers you could prob dominate august burns red covers like they were nothing. but BOO is really fast and technical. u should also check out the dillinger escape plan they have really fast beats but the timing blows ur mind. but something that is really really fast and hard to play is despised icon. i bet u could play them all but it would be awesome to see a cover just from one of those bands. and i realize none of those bands are the same style as you.

  • Sky Eats Airplane...really? I hope it's the best thing for you. I am gonna miss hearing what you can do with Periphery.

  • That was seriously inspiring man. I see a lot of drum corps coming out of there too. Killer feet too.

Do you have any tips for those who want to increase their kick speed?

  • practice :\\\

sounds lame, but thats all you really have to do, work at it..

  • I can appreciate the technicality, but it's lacking slightly in colour, tone and ambience imho. There's not that certain "melody" that I always find really awesome. but ****.

  • sounds like thomas lang joined meshuggah. fucking awesome man! i love thiis.

  • Cheers mate !! Long live the Groove !!..

  • pretty solid i myst say.. 4/5* from me

  • Remembrance by Gojira?

  • Too bad the audio is way off from the video.

  • AMAZING

  • insane :D

  • ahh ur alright

  • Jesus...

    Amazing.

  • phuckin polyrhythms. hard as hell to get down

  • what kind of drum is this!?

  • i'd love to be able to play that style, i'm having trouble figuring out how to learn independance with different limbs and also polymetrics, which is the same thing me thinks. I'd really like to go to this music school in montreal, the drummer for Martyr i guess is a teacher there now. That would be sick, he's pretty sick at linear playing. you're just nuts tho man, your drumming i mean, super awsome, I hope periphery stays together and has great success, i'm sure you guys will, peace

  • sorry for being a comment monster and using up all the comment space lol. thanks for the info on that beat. i'll keep trying it, mabe i'll try making my own using the 1/4 note triplets, on this dvd are you going to show any techniques or exercises, i'd love to see the independance exersices you might have used in the past to get to this point. I live in Moncton,n.b., here in canada, i took lessons with mike machine, he plays in my friend's band, he may be fast, but you're sick man!!!!

  • sounds like 3/4 timing when i listen to the cymbal but then when i listen to the kicks and snare beats sounds like 4/4 lol, you should really do that part of insomnia in a vid on here. that would be soooo awsome if you did. peace.

  • It sounds as if the tempo changes, but it doesn't. The chinese is playing quarter note triplets against a backbeat on the '3.' The final version won't be like that, as I added a bunch of ghost notes and the hi-hat will be pedaling the (regular) quarter notes. You will be able to see it performed on the DVD. Thank you for your kind words and interest!

  • dvd??? when is this coming out?? i'll be getting one

  • you should make a drum video for insomnia, or at least the song from 3:15 on, the whole breakdown part, the drums for that are sooo cool. i have to learn it. it's buggin me that i can't figure it out, are you playing the cymbal on every second 8th note, is that what's goin on there in that beat? what is the time sig on that beat, 4/4 ? i can't tell.

  • Sick. Incredibly SICK. I hope you and your bandmates come back to new york soon!!!

  • holy frig, you're awsome, do you write out all your drums in sheets, i just remember what i'm doin, i guess it's good for writing intricate parts with rest notes and stuff eh. mabe i should start writing my drums in sheet first, the rest of the band isnt' tech enuff for me to do that, i found about periphery from Born of Osiris top friends on myspace, i typed in "Orbinator" on youtbe and found you on here lol, Cameron from b.o.o. is an amazing drummer eh? did you teach him or something?

  • your like my drumming hero

its nice to see a really good drummer

    in maryland.

    theres few here

    i have always been a periphery/bulb fan

and you just set the record straight for periphery

  • You remind me largely of Chris Pennie. You're amazing!

  • (Damn the video sync!) Dude, you're phenomenal. It makes me happy when I see people than can perform similar ideas I have in my head (but can't yet do).

  • Thanks so much, man! I'd leave you a personal comment but for some reason I can't (do you have that feature turned off?). Anyway, I really appreciate your compliments and for being so receptive to what I'm doing! Any plans to post some of your own clips?

  • Yeah - I have my comments feature off. (I'm an observer - not a poster of my own vids... yet.) At the moment, my playing is not really at a level I'm proud of. The past few years my practice time has gone away (married/work life), but I'm getting back into the groove! When I get polished up again, I'll likely post something. Keep up the good work.

  • Kill yourself amfinc

  • man, you have some impressive polyrhythms. 3:42 reminded me of "The Walk" for your band.

  • Very nice footwork, i just cant say that the handwork really impresses me, huge talent though

  • um u r soooooo good at drumming

  • <3 it,nice work!

  • un futur très grand batteur...

  • i can hear similarities from Gavin Harrison and some how Mike Mangini

  • hahaha, u funny man:) awesome drumming! rok on bro:)

  • This is pretty fucking awesome!

Just for my own fun, are you a right or a lefty?

  • gah ok i have been looking for this exact bass sound if anyone can help me please let me know

  • mine is close. i use an aquarian superkick 2 with a gibraltar click pad. but im changing over to the Evans EMAD2 or 3. they give a deeper kick.

  • i have the superkick 2 and click pads but i cant get that sound and id rather not change my heads

  • You wont get that sound exactly like on this vid cos you have to take into consideration that his bass drum is mic'd up and eq'd.

  • Actually, the sound of the kit as a whole is highly natural. I added microscopic bits of bass and treble (yes, bass and treble... no actual frequency readings, heh) with GoldWave.

With that stated, the biggest things to bear in mind are (in order of importance): the fact that I am playing the bass drum, the actual acoustic sound of the instrument (tuning, pedals and pedal settings), microphone selection and placement, and the microphone preamp (part of a Fostex multitracker, not special).

  • I forgot to mention the sound of the room is huge as well (put that before the preamp, heh). My woodshed was very 'dead' sounding back then but since then I've laid some oak hardwood floors. Goood stuff!

In these times (if you're not witnessing the event unfold directly in your presence), it's easy to get caught up in wondering whether or not someone is making the sounds that you are hearing. Not only is the kit sound natural, but the playing as well, heh. This is a very 'anti-Pro-Tools' solo.

  • takes too long to load.....

  • hey what is your cymbal setup like? good drumming

  • great check my video mcnamara bros dueling drummers

  • i thought he had more spirit than this tbh xD

  • what kind of pedals do you use?

  • good but when ur playing just on the bass its kinda boring maybe if u could put something over it that wasnt just 8th notes on the high hat

  • great double bass but also boooooooooring!! sorry my english..

  • Mike Mangini fan?

  • i heard hardly any toms just double kick and snare hes good but that was boring sounded like some one warming up or fucking off

  • I'm not saying he's bad drummer, his double bass skills exceed mine. Very good control, but it was just boring from my perspective, it doesn't seem he was really into it.

  • fucking amazing coordination

  • nice dude. we have similar styles. ;)

  • Very 2D solo. Where's the dynamics?

  • I saw bits and pieces of just about every Mike Mangini solo in here.

Way to be original. And Boring...heh.

  • Yeah sure your good, but boring

  • Really reminds me of Tomas Haake. Fuck all those drummers who think speed is what it's all about. You have crazy technique and I love it. I can easily hear this being put to some crazy guitar work.

  • no fuck you

  • wow, i absolutely love it!!! 5 stars without thinking twice. Have you ever seen Marco Minneman play because your style here made me think of him, with the independance and technicalities, etc. Your articulation is mostly very good, but I agree with btldrummer, this solo is definatly for a drummers ear, not for your average crowd who just wants to hear blazing single strokes and gets googly eyed over sparkly drums. . .

  • Woah.Polymetry at its very best.Funny how some people think you're just missing the beat.

  • I totally agree with u!

and the myspace song...pixieprog is to bumpy!

Try to work on your accuracy of time...

  • This is one of the solos where its for drummers and not for a live crowd that wouldn't know the awesome tech shown.

  • man very solid amazing tech wise but lacking in the show dept. but what ever man really drummers know that u got the skills to pay the bills man Ps What did u do for independence training my god

  • YOU hold the drumsticks all stiff.

  • wow u really must not play drums this dude should be sponsored he can play things like terry bozzio its brilliant

u really should go shit talk a vid that actually sux

  • this guy's independence reminds me of mike mangini

  • ur an awesome drummer dude how long u been playin

    check out m drum vid

  • i LOVE the sound of your bass drum

howd you get it like that n how did u mic it?

    awesome skills

  • i didn't like this solo to much.. i like really fast solos.. but all in all.. u were ok...

  • That was awesome! Your wicked good.

  • loved every bit of this solo. its great. nuff said.

be well and go in peace.

    x

  • you are an idiot. i would have posted a more intlligent response but it was too long. oh this is good about me by the way. but hey, he's not looking at music at all, he demonstrates a lackluster ability to play the whole set. and he doesn't really have a style, other than never ending 32 notes on the bass. im going to put a drum solo of mine up, and we will see what you think.

  • Best drum solo, by a seven year old ever? look that phrase up... thats good drumming. you have no rhythm if you think that this is seriously good. it is just okay.

  • hey dickfore... where do you see his music? on the side? hes definately not looking at it. i only have a few things to say to your reply...

  • man, this makes me laugh every time I read the comments! It is just apparent that people are confused by your otherwordly note divisions. But if they would look at the transcriptions they would actually find a new appreciation for a soloing. Seriously though, most people cannot even fathom what 5ths or 7ths would sound like under a steady beat! So the fact that you are able to execute those things makes you beyond most musicians(or people who would call themselves such).

  • go to a hardware store and buy door foam and put it under your toms heads it works better than moon gell or drum gum.

  • excelent final!! congrats dont worry men for the sticks!! very lOL!

  • I really wish I could hear it. Not sure if problem's on my end or yours. Enjoyed your other vids, btw. Good work! But what causes that audio/video dis-syncronization? (Anyone?) I want to upload some of my own work, but would be VERY distraught if the timing was off--as it ruins the piece, imo.
