@lilltartan I can't remember exactly when, but it's inferred throughout Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, and is made very obvious (soonest I can remember) in the episode where they've discovered who the ultimate culprit is and have resolved to take her down, and you see some flashbacks of her life, then you see her throw a coin into the offering plate thing at the shrine, and Hanyuu's all red/black-eyed and rejects the coin, stating how she, with her friends' wills, will overcome the antagonist's.

Unless you are referring to how Hanyuu became Oyashiro-sama or something, as shunkwugga explained quite well, which is explained somewhat in the 3rd or 4th episode of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei.

I'd like to say first off, this might spoil a lot.

Hanyuu is a demon, she's Rika's ancestor who told her daughter, Ouka Furude, to kill her because she was a demon. Even though people think she's Oyashiro-sama, she really isn't. The /real/ Oyashiro-sama was an alien, if I can remember right, who was in the spaceship that crashed into the swamp. Because the aliens brought the disease, Oyashiro-sama became a doctor to help cure it, thus worshiped.

Hope it clears something up for you guys~ :)

actually the whole alien thing was just Rena going crazy, Hanyuu is actually oyashiro. In one of the episodes it showed Takano trying to put a coin into the box-thing but hanyuu made it bounce back(because she didn't want takano at her shrine). also, Hanyuu is often shown apologizing over and over to people, and whe people are affected by the desease they here someone appologizing over and over.

The thing at the shrine is more-so Hanyuu being protective over the village, since a part from the game explains she was a demon and did live as a person in her life, not a God. As well as her daughter.

My personal view on the apologizing was that she has had to watch these things go on over and over again, even if it isn't her fault, she wishes she could help but cannot interact with anyone but Rika. So she's apologizing that she can't save them or do anything.

Because Hanyuu is a god. She's Oyashiro-sama but since she can't do anything but watch her friends die, she considers herself powerless. Later on in Kai she must have used her powers (Idk o.o) to have a solid form and be able to help

I'm not even sure where this information is found (I'm guessing the games) but when she was alive during the first outbreak of Hinamizawa Syndrome, she was blamed for it and called a demon, since she had horns. Then her daughter killed her, and she was made a scapegoat for the stuff, and everyone calmed down because they believed they killed the demon, but lived in fear of her spirit, and called her Oyashiro from then on...or something.

The Diclonii were identifiable by their horns, but people hated them because they were heartless killing machines and were well-known for it.

Hanyuu was just...born with horns, and this was a time when superstition was rampant...Hanyuu lived hundreds of years before the events of Higurashi, and people were superstitious. During the first big outbreak of the Syndrome, Hanyuu was blamed because she was "a demon."

I didn't read the manga, so I wouldn't know about that. All I know is that the way they were portrayed in the anime was to eradicate and replace humanity as the next line of evolution. That involved killing all humans.

No, her daughter was in her teens when she killed her. Hanyuu's actual form is seen for a second, and she looks MUCH older. I'm guessing she just appeared that way since a little girl would have an easier time relating to another little girl as opposed to someone who looked like her mother.

I've just stoped watching Kai where Hanyuu calls herself God in some episode. But I don't remeber any part where someone said she was any demon.

And those people how heard footsteps after them (like Rena and Satoshi) and apologizing heard Hanyuu, yes. She was apologizing cause she couldn't do anything. And everything she was able to do was just walking after people apologizing, that's how Rika said. So there was no curse or disease after all. So no Oyashiro. Just Hanyuu.

@pepsi93 I have read in one chapter of the series. (I don't know what is the name of that chapter in Japanese, but it is kind of a side story, not the main storyline.) It depicts Hinamizawa when Hanyuu still alive. There was a riot in the village by people claiming that Hanyuu is demon because she has horns and tried to drive her and her family (her husband and her sister, an ancestor of Rika, named Oka) away from the village. That is why I describe Hanyuu as demon. Read shunkwugga's comment.
