unni sir has sung well only. why pick on unni sir,Most of the non telugu speaking singers screw up the lyrics. They eat away the lyrics,u can hardly make out what they are singing.with unni sir lyrics are clearly audible.which singer these days sings with emotions.
Another point I would like to add is that if the singer does not know the meaning and the right pronunciation, how will he able to sing with the right bhava?
Unni sings film songs very nicely, but his Telugu diction is not good. I love his voice , but this is not what I expect from him. Carnatic music would have spread far and wide if not for musicians who hardly care to perfect their diction. Therefore they sound like they are in a hurry to blurt out what they know and finish their job! The day carnatic musicians give importance to diction and to singing with the right bhava, that day it will get its due.
If lyrics were so important, carnatic music would not have diffused so profoundly to all four states of southern india. I think carnatic music plays a bigger role than that of a meduim for bhakthi!
please listen to the song of " Rama Varma, Rajashree and Ratnaprabha sing Sita Kalyana Vaibhogame in Raaga Kurinji" to know how important the diction and pronouncing ofthe owrds the right way--> again it in no way detracts the brillince of Unni.
Was going through some of the comments..unni is brillinat--no doubts; but his telugu dicition in the song remaina off mark. i feel the muscian & listeners experience will be enhanced if both know the meaning of lyrics. i strongly feel the singers should make concerted effort to know meaning and pronounce the words in the right way ( i don't advocate to learn telugu--though some feel, not learning telugu is not an option if you want to be a top notch musician).. i hope this helps. allareddyrr
All the musicians from the 4 southern states of India may not be proficient enough in languages otherthan their own regional language. But if his captivating voice is capable enough to confer the highest bliss, we are blessed and privileged to converse with the lord. And Unnikrishnan is one among them.
There are many great musicians who are well versed in their own regional language, but who cannot confer sarupya saukhyam to the listeners with their proficiency in music.
I dont speak tamil or telugu(i speak malayalam), and i dont have a clue what he is singing but I've listened to this peice multiple times because i think music in itself is bigger than the lyrics. He dosent speak telugu so its obvious he is gonna make mistakes . N if it bugs u too much u might wanna stop listening to this.
hmm..I feel that the lyrics have to tell a story - drawing in the audience so that they can connect from an emotional standpoint. and i think emotions are what drive great songs - they give you that feel of unfulfillable longing to hear more and more..
So Lyrics are important for me,and also lyrics shows the composers feeling at that particular time when he composed the song..and it gives real meaning to the song especially if its a great song like this..
springfield29..u r right on the point.. somehow I have seen posts that keep praising the musicians even when clearly they made mistakes with the pronounciation... they are all great musicians no one can find fault with their dedication but in order for one to be complete bhava is equally important ....all these people who take it easy on language should sit before Divine Souls like MS and learn...
@springfield29 I totally agree with you. Although music itself has an universal appeal, lyrics are very important if the reach has to widen. When the audience understands what the singer is singing, they can relate to it in a much bigger way than otherwise.
I admire the way Ramadasu put such unique words together and i can't take it when some one try to spoil that effort. It wouldn't have bothered me much if its a film song or something else.
The meaning of the song is important for me where as music might be important for you. It's all taste ..One persons genius can be anothers tosser. Its like an open ended disussion ..
To be frank i have agree with all the people here about pronunciation, i didn't like it either,, It should be more clear, i guess only Balamuralikrishna can do justice to this song..
Fair comment sudamsh1 n sreebhar! It's worth their while for celebrated singers to take a few moments and learn the correct prononciations of the words in language they don't know. But having said that modern singers are careful and do so ,take for example Bombay Jayashree. She doesn't commit such errors!
Poonthanam and Melpathur were great devotees of Lord Krishna. Poonthanam, a great poet, who wrote his verses in the vernacular, was famous for his bhakthi where as Melpathur, an erudite scholar and great poet in Sanskrit was known for his vibhakthi. Melpathur used to laugh at Poonthanam's Sanskrit reading and recitation. One day Poonthanam was wrongly reciting "Padmanabho Maraprabhu",which means Lord of trees in Malayalam.
Melpathur openly laughed at Poonthanam hearing his mistake in pronouncing the language and corrected saying, Padmanabha is not Maraprabhu(Lord of trees)but Amaraprabhu (which means Lord of immortals in Sanskrit). Immediately, there was an asareeri (celestial voice) from the inner shrine:"I am also Maraprabhu"(Lord of trees).Lord was alwys partial twds Poonthanm bcs his bhakthi was greater than a didactic scholar.Bhakthi is abv sahithya& Unni sang with utmost bhakthi tht mde this rendition great
oh my... youtube is blessed.. it made us find the Asareeri.. the great Vdyaganapathy can now tell each musician where they rank on the Bhakti scale... I have seen this story of urs on other posts.. so Avidyaganapathy Unni is no Poonthanam and you are no Asareeri...
Sri ramachandra[kodhanda pani] has your words have become a gold .......why u will not react even if call you....I had not left meditating on you even in my dreams..........
It is a wonderful Ramadasu Kirtana and Unni Krishnan is a good singer. But I did not like the way he pronounced beautful Telugu words while singing this song.

I'm not sure about how the pronunciations go, but...he sings it richly. There is emotion into his words. It's really something.

especially that 'kalalO nI nAmasmaraNa'.. its should be pronounced as kala(dream) not as khala(art)..it bugs me every time !!

Very bad way to spell simple telugu words in a kirtana. The ragas and compositions are killing the simple essence of bhakthi.
