@tray2022 which site classifies Les Mis as a rock opera? Having performed in the show several times with friends in the show around the world and since it's my favourite Musical and the fact when character breakdowns have no mention of rock tenor or rock baritone etc I'd love to know who classifies this show as a rock opera? It has been classed as 'pop opera' in reviews but Rock Opera leans to rock singers/scores..no matter tho..Les Mis is AWESOME!
I think his Valjean got a lot better in London--at least in the videos I've seen from that production, he sounds closer to the age Valjean is supposed to be (he's forty-six at the beginning of the play), and his acting seems more mature. And he didn't wear ridiculously long wigs in London, either. :)
I think it's freaking impressive that Drew has played so many leading roles in this show, especially since Valjean and Javert are so vocally different. But although he can nail the role vocally, he doesn't work for me as Valjean, and I didn't like his Enjolras either. Nothing again him or his talent, he just doesn't really fit them for me. I did like him as Javert though, even though he's a different type from the norm, and his Grantaire is the best!
Drew Sarich has a knack of playing Victor Hugo main roles, first as Quasimodo in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (in Germany) and now Valjean in Les Miserables, he really has talent to play all of these roles
This is great!!! First time I've heard him as Valjean. :) I have to say his range lends itself VERY well to this role, although sometimes his youth shows itself too much. But on the whole, I love it!
@drstory thats fine you feel that way, im simply stating my opinion that drew is absoloutley fierce. I've played this role and i know how hard it is to play but drew was an inspiration when i watched this because our voices sound similar, thats all .. no big deal :)

Up there with HPJ, Bowman and Kingsley to be the worst JVJ's in the history of the London production. Good voice for Enjolras, and Judas in JCS, but a horrible, horrible, nasal whiney Valjean
i tend to disagree. I think he is a vey convincing valjean. Yes hes a little young and scrawny. But in no way is his voice whiney. The clarity and the diction in his voice makes it so convincing to watch. Just cause hes no the stereotypical valjean, he still makes the character his own and his interpretaion is very interesting
@Allshookup1 That's bullshit. Ok fine, his interpretation is interesting, but it's just not Valjean. Yes he has a clear voice, but his voice doesn't have the richness and breadth that Jean Valjean's is supposed to have. If you want to hear how Jean Valjean should really be done, you need to search for Gary Morris on youtube. Let's come back down to reality here folks. Drew is ok, but they're scraping the bottom of the barrel if he's Valjean.
@drstory Gary Morris was pretty annoying actually.. He had too much vibrato and his voice sounded forced at many notes.. However, I've never seen him performing live.. I only heard recordings.
@drstory I saw Drew Sarich as Valjean in London and he was mind blowingly good. Bring Him Home was the best I had ever heard it, i've seen the show numerous times and he was the best I've seen
Drew I love your voice!! Even if it's so young, your incredible acting makes up for most of that. I wish people would stop hating on the American accent. Leave it alone, already!
@thesilvershining its funny that people bash on accents when those who sing it in england haev british accents when the show takes place in france lololololol
@MrActor123456789 That's a bullshit thing to say. There is no define way of playing ANY character, in any musical. Sure there are some specific factors that should be met in a character, but every actor should make that character their own, not pretend to be some other actor, thats not acting that's doing an impression, and if you want to see someone do impression's go watch Terry Fator.
@clownrus I'm not saying he should pretend to be another actor or that he shouldn't make it his own. All I'm saying is, physically he is plain out wrong for the role. He's also not convincing as an old man or as a convict at all. There's a difference between making it your own and not playing the character at all the way it's written. His voice is way to youthful sounding and he makes no attempt to do any kind of character voice to disguise it. He's just not right for this role. Period.
@MrActor123456789 Thats your opinion on his performance. I, on the other hand, think he does a beautiful job, he makes quite a frightening convict, and although he doesn't come off as an old man, I don't really care I still love the way he portrays Jean Valjean.
@MrActor123456789 I agree about your comments. Not taking away the fact that Drew has an awesome voice but it's not the right voice for Jean Valjean. @bestnameevar..mate..Les Mis isn't a rock opera!!!
@clownrus Actually originally it was written as one. It's a pop opera (meaning popular music of the time) and the original orchestrations were very heavy in the synth and electric guitat department. But these orchestrations are completely orchestral.
but why?? I am English, but why is it wrong with singing American.. it's really no different than singing English.. he was french, so both are different, it's just a different type, but it's no different than any other language/accent.

It annoys me when I hear people in Phantom singing with their blatant American accents...for example the word "Past" should be "Pahhhst", not "Passssst"...I hear you on this one.
Since each of us is entitled to our own opinion--I am American and think accent does not matter. What makes one way of pronunciation better than another, or one language superior or inferior? Sarich sings beautifully, and the story itself is unforgettable. That's quite enough for me.
yeah so I went to see Drew in July of 2007in this production, but he wasn't there. It turns out he took two weeks off....I was there on his break. I almost died when i learned that he was coming back as Jean Valjean. *dies anyway*
amazing singer and i agree with all the stuff bout him being too young....but whats with the orchestrations??!! especially the percussion.....NOT sounding very les mis at all lol
i love sarich, amazing singer, but he doesn't have enough troubles and years in his voice yet..you know? its does sound fresh, but he was just in jail for 20 somewhat years, he's old, he's had stress, his voice should reflect that..
Just seeing clips, definitely comes across like that, but the total performance, he's got this really nice balance of vulnerability yet a angry wisdom.
Wow...he's so different from other Valjean's I've heard/seen, and I absolutely love it. He really does an excellent job and I never would have expected it.
Drew is Alysha definitely my favourite Valjean! I saw him in Les Mis in the West End last week and he really was in a league of his own. His voice is beautiful.
i didnt say it was a bad thing, i really like drew sarich alot as JVJ. but even if hes trying to sound classical, his timbre is still inflicted with that course rock sound. its fine that it is though
a little over the top, but no doubt he's got one heck of a set of pipes on him.
