Lutefisk is fine if you make it yourself properly or buy some of the expensive stuff. The cheap crap they sell in the low cost supermarket chains is just low grade fish that tastes bad from the start. So don't get that.
"I don't know anything about lutefisk..." Yeah, well, first off, you should take about ten steps back from the pot. That's a nice suit you're wearing, after all.
I'm norwegian and i HATE lutefisk....... NO fish deserves to be cooked in that ..... condition ...... blæh! .. and why is that woman on the left dressed like a caveman on crack.....? but i love thaifood ((: norwegians love asian food from Toro (((: and makrell i tomat and then we have a kid on a yellow can and put our food in tubes ..... if you love europe and you love food, you love Italia, not Norway .. :P
@linnetteification I'm 26 and have never eaten it. I've smelt it, which is why I've never tasted it. It might taste delicious, but it smells utterly revolting. I do eat blodpudding, though. Yum!
@Odlandskate so I'm old? not even 30 yet and I have loved lutefisk since I was 13 :) BUT the important thing is to not having the fish as a shaky jelly, and also you must have the right side dishes :)
Never tasted it untill I was 40. But now I'm a great afn. Most grown up Norwegians have it at least once around XMas. The good thing about it is you cover the whole thing with bacon bits and bacon fat, potatoes, mustrad and pea stew ... and most imortant, have Aquavit (Strong Snaps) and XMas beer with it.
You will have completely forgotten about the jelly fish by then.
My god you Americans are so ignorant. I am a Norwegian and most of this was just bs. Doing a google search and you will learn... Even serving lutefisk that not even from Norway? Well, then its not lutefisk
well... all you need is dryed fish, caustic soda, water and salt to make lutefisk. But this lutefisk looked wrong, geelo like and got wierd side dishes. So, I would say no good.
Norwegians eat it with small mealy boilded potetoes(Ringerike-poteter) , pea stew and huge amounts of diced bacon in rib fat. Add some Colemans mustard and you`ll have the best meal money can buy. Greetings from Oslo, Norway
Given the right accompaniment, most anything can be made not just palatable, but downright good.
I loathe Brie cheese's moldy taste and gooey texture when eating it alone, but pair it with the right kind of crunchy, savory cracker, and I'll put away a day's pay worth of the Queen of Cheeses without a complaint. Same deal with Japan's natto, though I admit that trying it a third time convinced me that I have irreconcilable differences with the stuff. :) Greets from Rocket City, AL.
LOL, I've lived in Norway for over a year now, and have yet to see anyone actually EAT lutefisk. Though you can certainly find it on Christmas menus and in the store. Blech.

I think to eat lutefisk...it HAS to be hot. Having it room temp or cold just makes the jelliness...unappetizing.
