It's so hard to tell on the internet if people are trying to be clever (and failing, because they don't understand the jokes I make) or if they get the satire in my comments, and are being sarcastic too.
lol, that would be the joke.
EVEN CREATIONISTS think the moon goes around the earth. I was making fun of thunderf00t for pointing out the most obvious thing ever, and I was making fun of creationists because even they understand that.
Man, that is a ghostly, beautiful sight. I'm sure I'm not the only person to have viewed this clip to wonder what it's like up there, a little away from our little corner of the cosmos.
Is it true that if you got to an observatory with a strong enough telescope that you can see the flag they planted during the Apollo mission?Because that would be cool to look at :)
Took my breath away. As a child I had a little telescope, about the size of my forearm, maybe a little longer, but I was never able to see anything like this (probably due to it being the length of my forearm). I've always wanted to look at the moon like that.
Just out of curiosity, how did you film it? Was it a holding the camera to the telescope job, or is it a built in thing?
I believe the crater with the neat sunlit mountain at the top is Aristillus. The kinda lumpy one below it and to the left is Archimedes. It took me a while to figure out what they were because the image is backwards (happens in my telescope too, but it's not nearly as powerful as yours).
What's even more fun is when the Moon is half-lit the other way and you can see Aristarchus. It looks like a shiny pearl in the Oceanus Procellarum. It as a very high albedo relative to its surroundings.
Nice stuff! Have you considered stacking some AVIs of the Moon or Jupiter using a program like Registax? When I started out in astrophotography my setup was pretty much the same as what you're doing now - holding a video camera to the telescopes eyepiece.
Seeing this reminds me of when I was using my old school hock-shop tele and the only thing I could look at was the moon. Beautiful and haunting to look at, nice vid.
If you don't mind waking up at 4 am you should give the Orion nebula a look. It's an impressive sight if you've never seen it before, but I don't know how well your camera would capture it.
That will spoil quite some prejudices that astronomical laymen have... at least if you don't manage by some means to get some really long exposure times.. (like by having a motorized telescope)
it wouldn't be such a problem if the videos were taken during a really cold winter night.
During that nights you could barely forget that there is a atmosphere while looking through your telescope (at least if this atmosphere wouldn't be that bloody cold during those nights)
Did you notice that Copernicus wasn't an inch across in the video? The crater is almost 60 miles (93km) in diameter. The Lunar Lander was a whole 14ft in diameter. If thunderf00t could get a picture of Copernicus to be 21,000 pixels wide (around 20 screens across) an Apollo lander wouldn't be a single pixel).
Found something at Wikipedia: Copernicus is 90km in diameter. So the video ist approx. 500km "high".
Btw. A timelapse would be nice, but you have to do it every night for a full month to really see great changes. In a single night the angle of the sun to the moon's surface moves just 5 degrees.
The hardest part of that time-lapse would be following the moon as it rises and sets each night... it'd be great to see, and I've seen other time-lapses of the lunar phases, but doing it with just a telescope and a camera would be a tough task.
That was a last quarter moon, judging by the picture at the beginning (and thunderf00t being in the US) - when we look through the telescope the image is upside down. Last quarter moon is getting thinner, if you were standing on the observed surface of the moon the sun would be gradually setting, and the shadows getting longer and higher.
Of course you are right. I forgot the 180° rotation (not using telescopes that often) and assumed this is a very recent video from the last night. When I'm looking up now (already dark here in Austria, Europe), I see the first quarter moon. So it matched what I saw in the video (should have analyzed the craters ;-).
I'm jealous... Moon is so beautiful and I can't photograph it....

We've had clear blue skies here in southern
ontario now for about 3 days and the half
moon was brilliant in the morning blue sky
today and yesterday. I could barely drive
for gawking at it. Does anyone ever try to look
at the moon in a telescope during daylight?
For all I know maybe you can't.

The strange movements of the Earths atmosphere... Would that be from our magnetic field? You know, similar to the Arora borealis?
aretz28 3 years ago
i thiiink its to do with the air in the atmosphere moving due to wind and it distorting the light... but thats just a guess.

The moon rotates once about every 30 days. I don't think that the shadow movement during a night wouldn't be too impressive.
You would also need a motorized telescope to make such a time lap... Which reminds me that you still haven't answered my last question :-(

But...
Shouldn't the shadows get shorter? There's a full moon coming so the sun would be more "top-down".
How large were the features that could be seen? I have no concept even for the approximate size.
