I know that this is a dumb question: Why does he hold his phone? Does he have notes for his lyrics on it? I write a lot and do some spoken word & I used to use my phone to get down ideas while I was out and had no paper. I'd put them into a text and save it as a draft. Is it something like that or does it just help to have something to look at or occupy the hands? If it helps, then I'd like to try it. This guy has excellent rhythm and delivery so he's obviously doing something right.
Its for notes, being a proffessional they make hundreds of songs, its too easy to mix text up or switch to another songs lyrics, they just keep notes on the phone to make sure they dont forget or switch, makes no difference occupying hands or not.
Pretty fuckin' sick, I wish the fans of today had the same mentality they did back in the 90's where lyrics proved an artist's skill. Now we have people like fucking Shawty Lo, Gucci Mane, and OJ Da Juiceman (WTF KINDA NAME IS THAT)
I don't think Cy was saying you should judge SOLELY on beats (and when he says music I don't think he only means the beat)... he's right that people often get overly caught up in other things (in this case, whether it fits their definition of "freestyle") that are secondary to whether it is *good music* or not. Which is always what counts most. Like, Public Enemy's lyrical content/vision were vital, but if they didn't make GREAT MUSIC first & foremost the other stuff wouldn't have mattered.
Funny that people are still dropping Ed O'bannon's name in rhymes in 2009... I think his name just lends itself to rhyming, cause there's nothing particularly significant about the person
For all those who have some sort of beef with the way this Kat flows, record your own video of you dropping lyrics(off the dome or written) and allow us to be the judge of your skill set. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy real Hip-Hop.
That was great, I dont give a fuck if is freestyle or whatever, enjoy the music!!!!!! Why hiphop fans focus on everything else BUT the music? Double Barrell is hot! Go support underground hiphop people, download Relapse and puchase Double Barrel...Em got enough money already LOL
from the way he was looking at his blackberry i think he had a few written reminders of verses on there. Torae is def a nice ass emcee and mad props to him but this is not a strict freestyle but still doper than most written.
And you're the kind of fan that is killing hip-hop. Other than the last 2 bars, It's clearly a written rhyme. Who can't see that? Jay labeled the clip a freestyle, NOT Torae. Did you hear Torae at any point say it was off the top? Didn't think so
Pretty much when an emcee spits a random verse, it gets labeled a freestyle simply because it's not, at that moment, apart of a song, NOT because it's improvised at that moment.
Bring some understanding to the table or go hide in your apartment.
Seriously.. I'm changing the title just cuz I don't want to bring Torae into an argument he didn't start, but personally I'd love to have this argument all day lol.. surprised to see people still promoting that "real emcees always spit off the top" fallacy.
Spitting off the top is great if you can do it well, but by no means should it be mandatory for every emcee.
(btw Torae def. does know how to go off the top, check my older video from Eclipse's anniversary show)
Exactly Nas couldnt freestyle off the top to save his life.. 90% of verses labeled "Freestyle" arent.. That includes some of your favorites like Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Lloyd Banks, Cassidy, etc. They are just labeled "Freestyle" most of the time.. It sounds better to call a record "Victory Freestyle" than "Verse over the Victory beat".. Why does everyone get at Drake for this same thing? Charles Hamilton, Mickey Factz, Skyzoo and others have been known to actually FREESTYLE off the head tho..
Suprised? Dude, they're EVERYWHERE! lol. Everytime I see these comments I want to flip, but I leave it alone for the most part 'cause theres too many of these people!
I don't know at what point freestyling (off the top) became a requirement to be an emcee. It's something that some can do and some can't, period. There's also this idea floating around nowadays that anything spat outside of a reccording booth can't be written. WTF?! SMDH. You should really vlog about that.
No disrespect but before you cop this kind of attitude you need to learn your history. For most of hip-hop's history "freestyle" did not mean off the top, that is a relatively recent idea and everybody doesn't use it that way.

cy:
Because the lyrics actually MEAN something --to ADULTS,
so they are just as important.....TO ADULTS,
& we there4 tend not 2jump on a bandwagon based *solely* on a beat.

Ill flow. Loved that they used an AZ beat as well.
So sad that the real lyricists and artists are now so deep underground and the posers and false prophets get so much hype and exposure.
