Impulse43211, the great thing about music is to each their own. If everyone liked the same thing the world would be a fantastic bore. I've also seen some bad Waits covers. I appreciate your comments and I enjoy intelligent tete a tete, so thank you.
let's face it, pretty is pretty, and crap is crap. This is pretty much crap. I would have thought this was recorded at The Walker Art Center in Mpls, Mn. They're great at displaying crap under the guise of "art".
@bigduke6702 i've heard some really bad covers in my day. trust me this is good for a tom waits cover. at least she's not trying to imitate his voice. that drives me crazy. i'm not even a st.vincent fan. i feel the same for marlin manson. not a fan of his music, but pretty good covers.
@hildathenoo She has two albums out of stunning original material. This was a special even to honor Waits- that's the only reason she (and everyone else there) was playing a cover.
@hildathenoo every artist does a cover now and then! anna calvi and st. vincent both have full albums of self-written material, which is more than we can say for most mainstream artists at this point. :(
@hildathenoo you don't seem to realize how new the phenomenon of the singer-songwriter is. go back even just 40 years and most of the biggest touring acts in the world were doing standards and old blues covers. also, yeah, this was a waits tribute show. and lots of male artists do covers too, by the way. it's not an exclusively female activity.
She was the highlight of the evening for me. Can't find a video of her version of "Downtown Train" though, which is a shame - I thought that was her best performance.
And WHAT AN AMAZING BAND under the musical direction of David Coulter (musical saw, percussions, banjo...) : Steve Nieve (keyboards), Thomas Bloch (ondes Martenot, glass harmonica, cristal Baschet), Dave Okumu (guitar), Terry Edwards (winds, guitar, percussion), Tom Herbert (bass) and Seb Rochford (drums) !!!! Encore...
@theondes I completely agree! They were too far back on the stage from where I was seated to get them on film, but I was especially impressed with Terry Edwards and Seb Rochford - brilliant stuff from all of them though.
@pnoplyr14 No it's definitely on her ring finger. But she mentions becoming "someone's elderly spinster aunt" in an article published on the LA Times blog yesterday.

I feel that everyone who partook in this event is at least a little insane.

Annie: What do you believe in?
Me: God.
Annie: Who in your God?
Me: You.
Annie: Is this reality or just another façade?

Pure sex. She could have had any man or woman in the audience that night.
