  • tip from a pro ,ppl dont waste your money on synthetic oil for bikes , yes it lasts longer than reg oil but that means it stays in your bike longer,its better to use cheaper oil and just change it more often... also if the engine is stored, synthetic tends to sheet off surfaces leaving them exposed to oxidation (rusty cylinders)motorcycle engines are much harder on oil than in a car,the clutch spins in oil ,the alternator sits in oil , and trans shears oil

  • i got my motorcycle second hand and the previous owner didn't tell me when he last changed it, how do i tell when to change it? is it purely down to the level on the dipstick? or can color and age mean a new oil change?

  • @lolzords234 Always a good idea to put new oil in when you get a used bike. It's $50 or less and it could make or break your new bike. Just do it to be on the safe side.

  • Can you keep the fairings on an oil change for an 05 600rr? Does a lot of oil come out when you remove the oil filter? Thanks!

  • I don't know about the fairings, but I do the filter.

    A reasonable amount of oil will come out with the oil filter, and if it is held upright, it will also hold some oil. I learned of this neat way to get around making a mess taking the filter off - get a quart-size (or bigger) plastic baggy and when the filter is loose enough to turn with your hand, put the baggy on it (while still attached) and take it off. All the mess will go into the baggy along with the filter :)

  • That's a pretty good idea. I wrapped my pipes with tin foil and it worked pretty well too =). And it turns out I did have to remove my fairings too, as well as move the container that holds the excess radiator fluid. The oil filter is trapped in there! That was a pain..

  • wow your oil change video helped out alot, i just bought a brand new bike back in october.The dealer said bring it back for a oil change around like 600-800 miles. They was gonna do that and check everything else for the first time for about $220. Thanks to you,i dont have to.

  • nice equipment...i prefer elf over reposol tho little bit thicker (10w60 compared to the 10w 50) which i think thats what your running...ive never heard of the starting the engine tho after filling it halfway is it just a habit you picked up or is that what your sappose to do, cuz ive never heard that before?? jw

  • thats because the oil filter is filling up with oil when this guy starts his bike there is no oil in the filter, that means the bike runs with out oil in the top end for a moment, really bad always pour oil in the filter before you put it on, happy riding

  • dont poor oil in the filter before putting it on. Your manual should give you a couple diff. amounts of oil to add...with or without oil filter replaced. the 10 seconds he ran the bike did no harm to the motor.

  • It was a moto-gp style tail kit from a company called Mad Doctor. There are many aftermarket r6 racing body work companies. If you are in the San Diego area, I recommend Catalyst Racing - they build to order.

  • The editing was quite awkward. The video was cut just before the actual execution. Example: "I'm goin to drain the oil", CUT, next step. There wasn't much to see. You might just as well read the instructions.

  • u should if not the first oil change def the second change but i would change it every oil change

  • Instead of looking at an oil change window then looking again or checking a dipstick and trying to get the level between two lines... a better tactic is to fully drain the old oil from your bike till it's dry, then look use the manufacturers specifications of how much oil to put in the bike then just put that much in. All the oil bottles have markings on the side to tell you how much you've put in.

  • well generally u drain or the oil out first. But remember, the ammount u need to put in will be totally different if u are only changing oil and not filter as well (I always change filter and oil at same time). Also if the bike is second hand and has had work done to it (rebore, stroker kit etc) the ammount of oil needed may vary from manufacturers specs

  • mate it will be almost exactly the same as on this bike. all u need to find is the oil drain bolt, which is mostly on bottom of oil catch can (on some bikes sutch as harleys they have a tube with a bolt on the end at bottom of engine)

  • Generally yes.

  • Warming up the oil is good for getting it to flow but when the engine hasn't been ran for a while all the oil is in the bottom and you can empty it all out. The center stand is good for filling the oil and checking the window but using the kickstand for draining it ensures that the drain plug is pointing to the bottom and everything flows out. But a great video otherwise. And why do I have an urge to go to a moto website? I think was shown more advertisements than the oil change.

  • putting the bike on the sidestand (kickstand is on a bicycle) doesn't always point the drain valve towards bottom, or more accurately, doesn't always place the drain at the lowest point, that is bike model specific.

  • It was like that on my ZX9 and my VF700. But you are right it is bike specific. I really like those KN filters work great.

  • Camera shake is bad for youtube video because of the way the codec works. If you keep a still image, the picture will be clear, if you have even the smallest amount of shake in the camera, the picture will be blurry and we can't make anything out. The codec assumes its an action shot you see. If you can keep a still video picture for when you want clarity it will do wonders for your videos.

    Great vid otherwise.

  • Is it necessary to drain all the oil or can I just drain it until the oil is level to the two marks? I have less than 20 miles on my bike since I changed the oil.

  • You can try... but be warned it will be messy.

  • You have too much oil in the engine. Drain and refill (with new oil) as soon as you can. Make sure you are checking the bike when it is level. The oil level should be between the two marks with the engine off.

  • Cool video - this video helped me change my oil and filter. I have one question. When I look at my oil window (when the motorcycle is turned off) the oil window is full. But when I turn on the motorcycle it is dead level with the full mark. Is this o.k. or do I have to take out some oil? What do I have to do next?

    but didn't you mean to change the oil on a warm engine because the oil will be *less* viscous? ;)

  • Yes, mugget, that is recommended.  For those of you who perform the oil change on a warm engine, please be careful of the headers and engine case. The parts can be VERY hot. Thank you for the feedback!

  • informative...but you forgot to emphasize a crush washer to the oil drain plug. Without a crush washer one might over torque the drain plug and  then it would not be a good thing.

  • You are absolutely correct! Crush washers are a critical aspect of changing your oil. Although on occasion you can re-use the washer, it is recommend to change it with every oil change. Crush washers are cheap and should never be left out. Thank you for the feedback, 636chance!
