There were several other inventors before Thomas Edison that had prototypes for the lightbulb, actually on July 24, 1874, Henry Woodward patented an electric light bulb, but unfortunately could not afford to produce them. Thomas Edison bought the patent off of Woodward in 1879, later that year Edison demonstrated his light bulb and then Edison filed for his patent in 1880. I find this highly suspicious, I believe Edison took the work from Woodward.
