@lennkop thanks for the response - my understanding is Native American's are upset with the band itself - the gimmick it uses "The Indians", the headdresses (not all Indians were plains Indians but they are all stereotyped as if they were), using the names of great leaders (which is incredibly arrogant) etc. If the band were to cease capitalising on "Indian" stereotypes and drop the gimmick it would be a start, an apology would be even better. I can't speak for Native American's though.

I just feel sad, especially in light of what the Choctaw did for the Irish during the Great Hunger (after being the first tribe forced along the Trail of Tears). Better example: It's sort of like white Americans appropriating Ainu symbols because they've seen them appropriated in Japanese media. The secondary appropriators are mimicking the group actually in an oppressive dynamic with the indigenous people. It's still awful, but the behavior of the first group of appropriators informs the second. I don't think this band would exist without Americans feeding Europe bullshit depictions of native peoples.

@lennkop thanks for the response - my understanding is Native American's are upset with the band itself - the gimmick it uses "The Indians", the headdresses (not all Indians were plains Indians but they are all stereotyped as if they were), using the names of great leaders (which is incredibly arrogant) etc. If the band were to cease capitalising on "Indian" stereotypes and drop the gimmick it would be a start, an apology would be even better. I can't speak for Native American's though.

@lennkop The campaign isn't for taking videos down (so far as I understand), nor for YT to police itself. Sorry for not being clearer, but for the band to stop doing this now, nobody can help the past, that doesn't mean we can use it to defend being offensive in the present. @lennkop as a Kiwi of Irish descent I don't want to be speaking on behalf of the Irish either given things haven't been too bad for Irish in NZ. I just feel sad, especially in light of what the Choctaw did for the Irish during the Great Hunger (after being the first tribe forced along the Trail of Tears). American Indians and Irish have a lot in common and while I'm sure this band never intended to demean or offend anybody, that is what they are doing.

Better example: It's sort of like white Americans appropriating Ainu symbols because they've seen them appropriated in Japanese media. The secondary appropriators are mimicking the group actually in an oppressive dynamic with the indigenous people. It's still awful, but the behavior of the first group of appropriators informs the second. I don't think this band would exist without Americans feeding Europe bullshit depictions of native peoples.

It's disgusting, but I somehow feel less immediately ready to shiv them than I would if they were from a country with a colonial history of genocidal action against the group they're imitating. The part of me feel that isn't filled with blinding rage feels that they probably are more removed from natives than American/Canadian/Australian whites and aren't as aware as a result... sort of like how my sister couldn't get her friends in Finland to believe that the Amish really existed.

One of the best bands I have ever seen, (I haven't seen them since the mid-70s). I am not a country fan but they are so tight musically and are so versatile and professional!
