I am a true Beach Boy fan I can accept anything they recorded, whether its good or bad really makes no difference in the long run. I think thats the point, they've had such a long run, 50 years nothing else really matters. I can't say this is my favorite tune, can't say its my least favorite. I know I know Brian is, was, and always will be the man, but Carl and Dennis made their valuable contributions too.
@pmoyer50 well ur entitled to your own opinion. the guitar riff for this song is better than anything on til i die...the best part about "til i die" is the ending i love it alot. where brian sings "until i die"
@NEWGUY562 : As to the ending of 'Til I Die being the best part of the song I have to agree with you. Overall, I think that melody beats The Night Was So Young, though. This album was the last Beach Boys album that had a lot of influence from Brian. Their subsequent albums I really don't care for too much. Maybe a few songs here and there were okay. If it wouldn't have been for the Mikey factor, the original Smile would have debuted in 1967 and God only knows what that would have done for them.
@pmoyer50 i'm glad u agree :) . no way..the night was so young has the sweetest guitar riff ever. and it's definately one of my favs out of all their post pet sounds career :)..
u probably a big fan of pet sounds and the stuff b4 that huh?
@NEWGUY562 : I was in high school when Pet Sounds came out. It was far ahead of it's time and yeah, I loved it. A lot of their earlier songs were great. The one side of Today was fantastic and a prelude to Pet Sounds. Friends has to be one of their most underrated albums. Many songs on Sunflower are great and 20/20 has a number of gems on it besides the songs that should have been on Smile in 1967. To list my top 10 songs in equivalent to ask me to argue with myself. I've too many favorites.
Peter Buck said; everytime I found this album at some sales, I bought it and gave it to a friend. This was the first album that a band really showed that synthezier bass.
Their voices are shredded. Maybe people just got old, but let's get real, if they had taken care of themselves and supported Brian when he was peaking, the Beach Boys would have (and possibly still would be) an incredible, lasting group.
As it stands, this album is perfect is far from their peak, but still better than anything I could do.
@lapislazuli53 I hate it, and honestly anyone who says they love it is a Brian Wilson cultist. Brian was great, but that ended around 1966. The man has lived off that rep and music company PR hype for the last 45 years. Essentially Brian's nutjob-to-genius ratio is about 10 nutjob useless years for every genius year. But to a Brian cultist, he could take a smelly dump on a piece of vinyl and they'd call it the greatest thing since Pet Sounds.
Mr. Lazyhippy - I have this LP too. In 1977 wrote record reviews at a small newspaper in NJ. I played it OVER and OVER. I loved it because Brian was so clearly vulnerable during that time. SO ill, and somehow managed to still create these admittedly peculiar, 'slice of life' songs. God Bless Him and I'm so glad he lived through all the horror to emerge on the other side to write more beautiful music.
@MsJollycholly Oh bullshit, regarding its "vulnerability". Brian fanatics like to call Love You brilliant because it puts them in some special club that's "in the know", musically. The other 99.8% of us live in reality. It's not a vulnerable album, it's an album performed by a batshit insane coke/heroin addict, and it's embarassing and demeaning that it was allowed to be released. If he wasn't famous, it'd be no different than letting a mental asylum patient put his delusions on vinyl.
@peterp21 thank you so very much for your astute and insightful commentary. While I Don't recall calling anything from this album 'brilliant', I DO maintain that people folks who under the thumb of their additictions and who are mentally ill to boot are ARE vulnerable indeed. I regret that there is no room in your world to comprehend that some of the most talented people can suffer significant torments from their schizoid demons. 1977 was a very different time and
@MsJollycholly Let me pull back a bit and clarify my comments, which came off a little aggressive. I am a big BB fan and of course appreciate BW for his place in the rock and pop pantheon. I just get irritated by people who have a weird obsession over BW and are unable to objectively separate Pet Sounds from Love You. I can't really hate Love You as I know the history behind it and BW's mental state at the time. But I think it's stretching the boundaries of good taste to call this "great".
@MsJollycholly Let me also say, I think Love You had some fragments and melodies that could have been turned into a good album. This song is a perfect example. It actually has some real instruments and a fantastic harmony part. It just needed some editing, more instrumentation, revised lyrics, and better production. The BB, who always have had some awful career management, made a major mistake putting this out in its near demo form. Note that the next album, MIU, only hit #150 or so.
@MsJollycholly Love You, among other things, helped to end their comeback. It's sad too, because DW at the time was putting out Pacific Ocean Blue and if they had held off, used some POB songs (if DW let them) and pulled in some more tracks in the can like Good Timing this could have been a good album that mixed the oldies/soft rock feel with some progressive stuff like they put out on Holland or Surf's Up. And sadly, BW never really came back. He never did start writing awesome music again.
It's a shame, but then again maybe the release of Smile this year will stirr some more interest in the band, which I honestly think was the best band ever with tons of differentiated music. How could one even guess that the BB's were behind Love You and All Summer Long, so different!
Even after their heyday, the Beach Boys could still create great songs like this one!

Those lovely little soaring harmony bits are classic BW .. as good as anything he's ever done.

I think "She Knows Me So well", "Girl Don't Tell Me", "Love & Mercy" and about 150 other ones would give this song a run for its money

Carl on lead, with brother Brian chiming in (and that's Brian's raspy falsetto :whooo" over the chorus -- still effective!).
