I vaguely remembered this piece of film. At the time I didn't appreciate it though having seen it again I thought that it was a brilliant piece which deserves high praise! (lol - pun not intended but still quiet funny). Both the script writing and the excellent cast of characters who played there parts superbly deserve full credit including Charlote (RIP) and Geraldine... Many thanks for the post...Well worth the effort..
I used to watch this in the Birmingham Library when I gave up gambling. They also had Godfather, Les Enfants du Paradias, Taxi Driver ( briefly ) Unforgiven, Fargo which I'd watch if 1 hour 30 mins. It's not the same trying to watch it on 5th floor surrounded by 50 people on internet. It's better in the booth without distractions. I watched a few other things with Charlotte Coleman, but I think she had all great supporting cast and could not find anything as good.
Wow this series was brilliant. Man I hated that pastor. Did anyone else see how he tried to kiss her cheek at the end and she turned away from him? hehehe Yes!
oh wow that C.B radio at 2.43 is amazeing as a radio Amateur myself I'm very intrested I wonder what make it is? Does anybody know what kind of C.B it might be out of intrest??? please let me know and I think the handle is very funny too THIS IS KINDLEY LIGHT COME IN MACHESTER COME IN MANCHESTER ha ha ha ha ha ha ha love that bit when she does that what a C.B radio handle very good who ever thought of that one must of had a sence of humor ha ha ha ha. Class series this I liked them all. Ste BSc.
It would of been better if she had found someone at the end, and found some kind of happiness, but shes damaged due to her upbringing, and its sad, especially as the girl died in real life, but i think we were all on her side.
This is more or less the story of the author (Jeanette Winterson's life). She went to Oxford and then went on to become a celebrated author. She had a pretty happy ending... even the "damaged" can you know.
I don't think Jess's mother ever "disliked" her. It was the mother's idea of Jess's "sin" that the mother disliked. I suppose seeing that Jess thrived after being cast out of the family and the church softened her feelings towards Jess. I first saw this when it aired on basic cable. I don't remember the movie being so miserable yet I sensed it was important. At least it ends on a note of hope that Jess will have the life she wants, based on religion or not.
Her mum had a real weird accent! As narrow minded as her mum was, you could still see how much she loved her daughter. Brilliant film, definitley did the book justice.
Thanks so much for posting this! Enjoyed it very much, and it is a great pleasure and very touching to see a great performance of wonderful, talented Charlotte Coleman who left us so tragically and early.
so.... did they accept her for who she is? i hope so, cause people should be who they are and nothing more, and if people cant accept that, then they are the ones with the problem. thanks for the movie, very moving
Actually, they didn't really accept her. Jeanette W hardly ever saw her parents again, and even now, after her mum's death, she still calls her "Mrs Winterson" instead of "mum"
Bloody great, the days when programmes from the BBC where made to educate and entertain giving an understanding from one generation to the next, unlike today where the BBC exploits the public and its standing by churning out PC (politicaly correct) material whose only effect results in the dumbing down social context of todays culture.
thanks a ton for uploading this! :)
