These are very interesting concepts. But can anyone who has read one or more of Dr Sarno's books attempt to explain/guess for me why it is that the Japanese people are not (as far as I know) more crippled with pain then those of us in western nations? I mean, perhaps more then any other race of people, they are really big on internalising true negative emotions/reactions and trying to be nice whenever possible. Thanks
Sarno write about how Western culture places a lot of emphasis on the individual. We admire the person who goes it alone. Whereas I know that the Japanese focus on harmony and community. (Did you know that in Japan if a family business takes on a new partner, they routinely ADOPT him? A grown man.) But in the US we have cultural paradigms like Lutheranism/Protestantism, which tend to emphasize self blame, individual responsibility + repression. Stiff upper lip.
I recommend a really good book for anyone who has really bad ME/Fibromyalgia called "The Journey Through ME" (Chroinic Fatigue Syndrome by Janet Hurrell you can get it on eBay and Amozon
TMS is real. I had back pain that was getting worse and worse. I was taking 10 vicodin a day and still in constant pain that was not subsiding with time. I had an MRI and was scheduled for cortisone injections. While researching the treatments I came across Dr. Sarno's book. I read it on a Friday and by Monday I took my last Vicodin and cancelled the cortisone treatments. Now I take only Tylenol and I'm getting better every day. It's miraculous.
I am a recovered fibromyalgic who left the medical profession to discover the cause and cure for this horrific disease after 15 years of failed treatments. I understand this illness completely from the inside and back out again. Symptoms are often mistaken as a cause and what can help does not cure. Please, do not give up and keep going. See my You Tube video "Curing Chronic Fibromyalgia - Choosing What Works" and my best wishes to you all!!!

My back was cured by Sarno's work, too. Ran the NYC marathon one year after reading the book, after not being able to run for a decade.
