i like the view from you about djing ;) the thing is every idiot can sync TRUE! But every idiot can learn beatmatching! so why the fuck people complaining about the sync i dont get it :/
Ok at the start its quite important that you learn beatmatch because its a basic skill but after that, is it a GOLDEN RULE of Djing> "Dont go digital then you are not a real dj anymore!"? I dont think so! But the Vinyl and CDJs Fetischist will say after i post this lolol only vinyl or cd is the real art -.-
I'm fairly new to the scene, and have been practicing Beat matching and finally starting to get it!! i have found myself resenting Auto Beatmatching due to its ease and making me as an aspiring Dj redundant, but i do like you thinking, if you do Auto BeatMatch, you should really be pushing your creativity! i guess im just scared that i wont be able to make it out there if everyone can Dj so easily
beat matching is good! but with digital djing using the sync function can help you focus on livening up your mix and delivering a good performance by utilizing other digital features such as hot cue juggling and looping etc. Having started on vinyl and cd all i can say is that digital is a wonderful thing. Love your out look and keep on mixing! remember- Vinyl, CD, MP3 were are all here to make people happy. Drop beats not bombs!
@dommp5 hmm, for a dj starting completely from scratch would it be worth learning to beat match and use cdjs or just learn to use digital dj equipment, leave the beatmatching to the software, let your creativity flow and hope that people start to respect digital djs. and one last question, do you think that digital djing is up to the same standard as cdjs? :) thanks for your time
Personally I think if you have the money it is worth getting a budget set of CDJ's to learn the fundamentals of mixing however it is by no means essential. I think that digital djing is of a higher standard because there are so many more possibilities. Pretty much every essential mix, mix cd or download you get from a dj nowadays will be digital in some, if not all, its roots. Either way have fun;)
@jeremyelrick hmm yeah i see what you mean but wouldnt that all time spent learning to beatmatch just be wasted the second you go onto digital? because from what ive seen you can do pretty much anything on digital now adays that you can do on a cdj *i might be incorrect so please do correct me if i am :)* so wouldnt it just be easyer to skip beat matching all together and learn the other aspects of djing using digital software. or would it just be learning how beat matching works?
I use Traktor pro and believe me sometimes the bpm detection and sync does not work - especially with breakbeat music. Therefore your beatmatching skills will be needed.
Onthe whole though it will accurately match bpms which is very useful. I feel that unless i am doing a set to a large crowd thats hardcore/oldskool/garage/hard dance i would use traktor.
@widdy2007 hmm ok, so its still worth learning but would it be something worth learning properly and really spend some time on it or just to learn the basics.
@ISN1P3DI You need to be confident enough to rescue any bpm cock up made by the software within 10 seconds in my opinion. This would take about 3 - 6 months of practise using vinyl and probably a shorter time if your using computer decks but like i say you should be confident that you can rescue any mix that isnt right because in a live situation its either put it right or just cut the mix to either track and live with the fact you cocked up!
@widdy2007 just had a quick go at a bit of virtual dj and your right, the sync is a bit dodgy with music like hardstyle ect, so beat maching is now on my to learn list :)
Great vid. Down to earth, makes a lot of sense and has pushed me in the direction of digital. Now I just need to fork up the cash and learn how to DJ. Yikes.
hear hear! ...the last 30 -secs hits the nail on the head. Who gives a shit how you get there ...it's all about the end result and any DJ with more than a few braincells will understand and respect that. Lets work together with techno avdancements to push the boundaries. Tj
This may be a ridiculously stupid question so bear with me. Am I going to need to get a sound card for my computer to support a digital turntable? I heard you say that you bought one with the turntable so should I assume that it's a necessity?
doesnt matter wich gear you use real djs dont auto beatmatch unless they are doing very complex mixes live but letting themachine do the work is cheating you might as well put a mix cd on and pretend dj ing is and should be a hands on performance and it doesnt matter if it vinyl cd timecodes or midi decks i have hybrids take alook at dj yoda he uses high tech gear but does not let the machine beat match for him unless he is busy coz he mixes video and music and uses effects
it always makes a difference when people take the time to actually prepare their post. thanks for thinking it out beforehand and making this a worthwhile intro.
really well said man!!!!! all the haters will continue to hate no matter what you use ... use what feels right and make sure for god sake you have decent taste in music!!!! i love your tenminmix for dec... .really tight man!!!! keep it real....
If both DJs are digital, their MIDI clocks can be synced very easily with just a cable between their computers. If only one is digital and using, say, Ableton, matching tempo is as simple as tapping a specified button to the beat.
DIGITAL IS BEST

@tosher777
My only critism - listening to your mixes would be that they sound a bit too 'synthetic' and lack that raw sound needed for a live venue.

Another Dissadvantage might occur when playing after someone else...Beatmatching is needed to adjust your tempo to the other DJ´s Set Tempo

It's pretty nice, yeah.
Google "sync two computers midi" (without the quotes) for a bunch of detailed instructions on doing exactly this.
By the way, Jeremy, I really dig what you're doing. Found you through the DJTT competition. Your setup is incredibly elegant.
