Great movie, especially Philip Baker Hall's performance, but is a person allowed to stand there and taunt other gamblers, or would he be asked to leave? I'm not much of a gambler, but other folks here might know more than I do.
Um. IfIfsandands. Were you ever in a Casino in the early 90's? Have you ever hung around con-men, or professional gamblers? Are you seriously suggesting that cigarette smoking is a "plot device"? You can't POSSIBLY be that clueless about these things. Oh - or are you just being obnoxious and wanting to push the whole "cigarettes are bad" thing onto a work of art that involves characters who, 95% of the time, are smokers? Your question is amazing. You can't possibly be an adult.
@dasheight I'm a filmmaker and I use smoking as a prop, so to speak, all the time. SO you are the one that is wrong Sir and not Ifsandands. You seem a bit stressed if I may say so, perhaps you need to sit down and have a smoke?!
Question folks, why all the cigarette smoking in the film? It's a serious question too. is it a plot device? A prop to suggest a character trait? Any ideas, share them....
often the smoke of their cigarretes works like a mask, mostly with the "tough guys" ads mistique, seriousness and works wel with alot of scenes i guess!
I love Kubrick, but I gotta say Fellini had a remarkable run of it, and Welles with just a handful of films could also be claimed as the best director of all time... and Speilberg has had a very interesting career too, and I think underappreciated because of his pop films.
This is PTA's unnoticed trademark character in all his films - the character we see for only one scene, but remember forever. Like the "Thurston Howell" character in Magnolia, and Rahad Jackson in Boogie Nights.
@brickbusterful even though I disagree, I understand what you're saying. I personally feel PTA is the next Kubrick. He's the most consistant yong director today.
I actually like his movies more than Kubrick's, and I feel like he's maturing as a writer and director, don't get me wrong, I LOVE magnolia and boogie nights, but I think there will be blood is his best. It's crazy how good he is, I feel like 3 out of 5 of his movies are masterpieces. And the two that aren't are still REALLY good.
@brickbusterful well Kubrick is arguably the greatest director of all-time, so that's not the issue here. But yes I agree, he's a cut above all the young(er) filmmakers around today (coens, tarantino, smith, etc.)
@jakespick I wouldn't rate him above the Coens myself, they are all very gifted, but I'm glad someone else gets excited by PT Anderson. Between PT, the Coens and Christopher Nolan, we movie lovers have a golden age of Hollywood movies to look forward to.
@IfIfsandands Christopher Nolan has got to be the most over-rated director in movie history! These frivolous comments regarding Christopher Nolan as a great director seem to mount with the passing of each day! Why?! Because instead of scrapping cheesy overblown ideas at the beginning stages of the creative process, he bone headedly plows ahead until, before you know it, that cheesy idea is in theaters the world over? Please don't compare that guy to PT and the Coens. Please.
@jakespick And he didn't even go to film school! The guy is such a talent. It's a real shame his movie The Master had to be shelved. I was so looking forward to it.
Thank God for posting this. Just saw the movie last night, rewatched this scene 6 times in row. Unbelievable scenery chewing. This is right up there with Swingers' hockey scene for most rewatchable of all time.

The crew wouldn't let anyone swear or insult others at the table. The shooter would have to behave himself or he would be told to leave.

this is the worst PTA film... and still, it's soooo good! That's when you know a director is talented, when their worst film is good.

@Rush555555 lol Fair enough. Ok, he has great technical mastery, if not real vision. PT is the man though, no doubt.

I agree with that. PTA even has the same output ratio as Kubrick, making only a few films per decade.
I also like Soderbergh, but he goes the opposite way, being extremely prolific.
But both are my favorite directors of this generation.
