@wcbrilsmurf No they did have to publish anything if they didn't want to the could have just never released it . Microsoft is also one of many companies that contributing line of code to the Linux kernel as well .
@maw88ify I doubt that. HOW is that statistic made? Is it actually USABLE code? Microsoft HATES everything open source, so they probably make sure the code they contribute with is very very buggy and not optimized at all. I don't trust them. They are criminals, they lie, they have always lied, and they are even proud of lying. They brag about it. Unsympapthetic all the way around.
@MsPwain WRONG Microsoft make money off of Linux severs "Microsoft has formally extended the strategic Windows-Linux interoperability collaboration we previously had with Novell to SUSE Linux." microsoft. com/opensource/
Yes, it's perfectly usable code. It's mostly drivers so to the kernel can take advantage of the optimized Hyper-V virtual device interfaces rather than the generic ones. If it was buddy it'd defeat the purpose. They want a platform to compete with KVM and Zen, both of which already had thier own optimization drivers in the kernel.
@maw88ify OK. My question is then - since Microsoft doesn't hate Linux anymore - why do they not allow me to buy a computer without Windows (and then CHEAPER). It's ironic that they accuse Google for monopoly, when they have a huge (highly illegal) monopoly themselves. I hear this "Microsoft has monopoly, because people want windows", and I answer "Yeah - and Google has monopoly because users want Google search, not BING".. It is definitely NOT because Google tries to kick BING out.
@crazypenny94 Mac uses code from BSD / Unix. Linux distributions are Unix like OS . So they are just as secure as a Mac, and have less viruses than Mac. There was a Mac viruses just a few years ago call Koobface that was a facebook virus ...
@crazypenny94 I have a mac trojan client on my mac right now you make us such easy targets because you feel so bullet proof you end up being nothing but venerable.
From now on whenever I get dragged to the iStore or the Apple section of BestBuy I'm gonna just start calling it Unix instead of OS(whatever they're on now) and see if the sales people even know what I'm talking about.
@AmiableAdder: They're not that well trained. If you really wanna troll some of these retail guys check out the Apple Store and talk to a genius. Just make sure that you know what you're talking about.
@BigBobsh2o: Their are no specifics for the OS that the ship uses. If I had to guess it would probably be some type of quantum-genetic computer with an OS made for massively parallel computation.
As for the merger between the OSs. That is highly unlikely to happen due to licensing issues and different points of view. You can keep hoping, though.
BSD is the best at the moment but it is not viable, Linux is the only real hope to take over the market with a quality system. Though I do suggest that you diversify your distro knowledge away from Debian based systems. And while KDE is the future for Linux, it is wise to get your feet wet with things like LXDE, XFCE, and OpenBox as they are very likely to be used in a corporate environment.

You forgot (Open)Solaris, which is just kind of there in the background. I actually prefer Ubuntu (Linux). Mac only runs on certain hardware, which is expensive when compared to it's PC equivalent. The BSD community is fairly small and I don't find it very user-friendly at this point. Then there's Windows, which is... Windows. Chrome OS is also very small as it's just starting up, it's also very bare as it relies almost fully on the internet.

Several fake windows pictures.
Windows doesn't have multiple desktops like that let alone anything like Compiz to do that with.

@kawaiifreak860 You can get Virtual Desktops in every OS, and 3D cubes for Windows.

And their contributions? Virtualization. :\

@jmans25 Not completely true BSD is use in many severs .
What you really mean is BSD desktop OSes is dead to home users, but severs BSD is doing well .
Adobe , Juniper , Yahoo , F5 networks , NOKIA, NASA, nortel, NYI , and the US government, and there are many others use BSD on their servers.
The BSD is dying troll is also now dying ... LOL

@maw88ify True say man.
Lol I heard solaris is also used in servers.
But for workstations those two are dead!

I think one day there will be some kind of merger between Windows, Linux, Mac, and BSD.
It's the type of operating system that they use for the computers in Star Trek.
