Yes there are penalty's for fighting. You get a 5 minute major most of the time. You can get a 2 minute for instigating along with a 5 minute major and a game misconduct if you are the clear aggressor.

Fighting is necessary in hockey because it allows the players to police the game themselves. When a player does something dirty he is held accountable for his actions. This means, less injuries, most notably to the star players who are sometimes targeted.

If other sports allowed fighting you wouldn't see bench-clearing incidents, or dirty plays.

eg: Pedro Martinez wouldn't throw a baseball at the batters head.

Example, top speed on skates and triped from behind head first into the boards, many more examples.. .. plus Canadians/NHL players (the majority) fight with honor, class and respect
