I'm very confused. I don't mean to be dumb, but why does she say she learned this on Norway? I thought this was an American folk song about the Shenandoah River... anyone know what's going on here?
@rundustyrun1 it means that this song is so beautiful that even Norwegian fishermen would sing when they're longing home. This performance was also recorded in the States if I'm not mistaken
@rundustyrun1- I think everyone but you can understand why she learned this beautiful song in Norway. We should be proud as americans that other countries appreciate our Folk Songs.
@rundustyrun1 Why would she go all the way to America to learn a song? I learnt many songs back home in Sweden when I lived there but it wasn't only swedish songs...
I've never heard of this performer before now; found her while searching for this song. Her clear, pearly high notes are piercingly beautiful. I have seldom heard a modern, popular singer with more purity of tone, without the airiness of pop singer sloppiness. Bravo!
@mindsaglowin She sings the Norwegian, swedish and danish versions of ariel :) When she "dubbed" that movie she was only 15/16. It's BEAUTIFUL, you should listen to it :)
The lyrics are kind of straight forward. I guess if english isnt really your language it could be hard. It's talking about a river (the Shendandoah) in Virginia. It's like an hour from my house.
You're right about that. The Highland games and the calling of the clans in North Carolina are bigger than Scotland's. I had the pleasure of living and working in Scotland for several months. Lovely country and people. Same for Ireland.
@res57 Wrong, the answer is of course that anyone can sing anything they like. I just can't believe some of the moronic comments to this stunning performance.
@jeanyeh1 It's a song about love, about freedom and for many Southerners in the United States, a beautiful song about Virginia. It has many meanings to many people. The original song was about a travelling trader who fell in love with an Indian maiden and told her father how he planned to marry her and take her away across the Missouri River. Flatboatsmen used to sing it and the song made its way to the sailors on ships which spread it around the world.
@jeanyeh1 This song goes back to the American Civil War. It is about a young soldier who is from the Shenandoah valley in Virginia. His family has been divided by the war . As he is far away from home
fighting the song relects his thoughts of the home he loves and the life he knew before the war tore it apart.
It is a deeply touching song and the melacholy and longing just oozes from it. I guess that is why it is so popular world wide. Hope that helps.
Taipei artist chorus....have you heard that chorus before? But I quit that team and went back to Miaoli county for a long time. Where are you? and What's your chorus?
@jeanyeh1 Just came across your question. It is about a young man who has to leave Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, USA to fight in the Civil War and he hates to leave his place.
@valbona34cena Bet it will turn out great! Group of my friends sang it today at the end of the school year, and it was fantastic. Even better than Sissel for me! Maybe because it was live, and it was choir, so it sounded somehow more 'flowing'.
Unquestionably the *second* best performance of this song.
The *BEST* performance is also by Sissel but from her "Sissel in Symphony" concert (no offense intended, Alex). Same violinst but with Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains on tin whistle.
I haven't yet ordered from this site but I plan to. They appear to have every CD and DVD Sissel has produced or contributed to. Unlike some other scandinavian sites they ship internationally. Most of the site will display in english. If you do order from them, please let me know if you are satisfied.
@alexhkleung Hi Alex, The only way that I know of to get the Sissel in Symphony DVD is to buy her Nordisk Vinternatt CD. The DVD is a bonus with the CD (a 2-disk jewel box). This is why this CD is more expensive than most of the others. The bonus DVD isn't advertised but you can check Sissel's discography (english) on wikipedia to verify my claim. This is is one of her best CDs and the DVD makes it a "must have".
Maybe the 41 who clicked the dislike buttons so far can't croak like even frogs. The angels themselves are singing here. Voices like this still exist? Indeed, it is a wonderful world.
Shenandoah was first printed as part of William L. Alden's article "Sailor Songs", in the July 1882 issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine. Lovely Celine… give me a break and I am sick of your Euro trash loving bullshit too. Let’s say I go to Istanbul or a Siberian fishing camp and say Sissel and Lady Gaga to the folks there. Which one do you honestly believe they have a better chance of recognizing. Canada WTF have they ever done for the world and beside welcoming with the Nazis what has Norway ever given the world… Vikings?
@Zardoz215 I think it is time that you take a tour of the world. You will find that we Americans aren't as great as you might think in a lot of ways. Seriously, your remark would be perceived as quite ethnocentric, and somewhat buffoonish by many, and that only hurts all of us Americans in the long-run. Remember, much of what we have, including democracy itself, originated elsewhere, by cleverer people than ourselves from abroad.
@KingOfErehwon: I get the impression that he's a drugged-out loser - the type whose greatest desire is to eat one of GaGa's raw meat dresses as soon as she throws it out a window.
@wiseroldfart You are right and I shouldn't have bothered responding to him. I should just now focus on how we Americans can get those wonderful Norwegians to clone Sissels for us. All my requests so far have resulted in no additional Sissels. We need them for sure. The world will be a more beautiful and loving place if each guy had his own Sissel. I know that guy wouldn't have said those nasty things if he had a Sissel to wake up with in the morning. There must be a way.
@KingOfErehwon: He doesn't sound like the type who would give up a McNasty for a Sissel. He can have 'em all!
At the risk of snide comments from punks, the most amazing singer I've seen on the rise is Barbara Padilla. She should have won America's Got Talent a couple years ago, but more people voted for a country boy. Her most recent performances confirm what I suspected - that she has the potential to become a great soprano. Beautiful, very modest lady with a beautiful voice.
I have only recently learned of this lady and I am extremely sorry that I did not know of her sooner!! She clearly ranks among the finest voices this world has EVER produced. She is now in my list of all time favorites along with Celine Dionne, Esther O'Farim and Barbra Streisand.
Many of our folk songs are known in the countries of Europe as theirs are known here. A fisherman in Norway may very easily have picked up the song from some
one else singing it. Point is, it's a beautiful song done by a truly special singer.
We are playing this song in our upcoming band concert at my high school.... wanted to listen to actually hear it sung!! Now I'm even more excited to play my flute solo in it.... THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
There is another belief, even here in America, that the Shenandoah in the song is not a river or a valley, ....but an Indian chief....Frankly I wouldn't care if it was a story of two squirrels fighting or the Oslo phone book. She sings it beautifully.
"Shenandoah" is an old American folk song. Sometimes it is associated with the Shenandoah Valley/River area in Virginia. The orgin of the song is not clearly known and the "setting" of the song is often in dispute. The Missouri River is another river in the US and is not near the Shenandoah area of Virginia. The song's lyrics were reportedly first printed in the US in 1882.
@dylki - Well - she doesn't say that it is - she says that she "learned it from an old norwegian fisherman"... He might have learned it from America - maybe he was a sailor in his young days visting the US or meeting americans ... :)
@yogi4life Wrong. She does not say "old norwegian fisherman", what she says is she "learned it from an old fisherman in the southern part of Norway". She never said the fisherman was Norwegian. Please pay attention. All of you. I would at least expect those of you who have english/american as your native tounge to get this right.
@Svendsor Yes - you're absolutely right - I misquoted her and actually thought that this old fisherman from the southern part of Norway was norwegian - but you are right - she doesn't say that... But my point is that she is not saying that this is a "norwegian" folk song or folk tune... She only says that she learned from an old fisherman in the southern part of Norway - and obviously "Shennandoa" (I don't know if that is the right spelling...) has obviously nothing to do with Norway...
@dylki And no one is denying that. Sissel says is she "learned it from an old fisherman in the southern part of Norway". She never said the fisherman was Norwegian. Please pay attention. All of you. I would at least expect those of you who have english/american as your native tounge to get this right.
I find it hard to respect the violin that place itself on top of Sissel's first harmonic many places thoughout the song. Why can't it place itself half an octave away? Sissel doesn't need any guidance nor cover up. In fact, she needs quite the opposite, for her voice to shine. I don't think the arrangement is as good as it could be.
The pureness of her voice reflects a Soul in complete harmony with her Creator. She fills the senses with effortless, clear and truly inspiring song. Simply beautiful in every way.
@KingOfErehwon: Sissel sings it better than anyone. I first heard Jo Stafford sing it. The orchestral arrangement in Stafford's rendition appealed to me more than her singing. If you put Sissel's voice with a lush orchestral arrangement similar to Stafford's, you'll have made a timeless classic that can't be beat.
@wiseroldfart - You are right. The arrangement with Stafford is preferable, and I usually like the orchestral arrangements with Sissel. Check out the arrangement of Over the Rainbow with Sissel here on YouTube for a wonderful variation of that old favorite. She also has some great small band arrangements with some new songs. If you haven't already, check out her new songs, "Miss You Now" and "Close To You."
@KingOfErehwon: Thank you for pointing out a few of her performances. I had been planning on listening to everything by her on YouTube when I had a chance. I've already listened to all the great tenors and several great sopranos. A voice like Sissel's deserves to be recorded as accurately as possible to please even the fussiest audiophile. Of course, the orchestra also needs to be recorded perfectly.
@wiseroldfart - As you see, she has the bucks to get the best bands and orchestras money can buy. Now, if we could only convince the Norwegians to make more Sissels the world would be a better and happier place. I figure every guy should have a Sissel of his own. That should be about right, don't you think?
@KingOfErehwon: Norway gives us the beautiful Sissel. Canada gives us the lovely Celine. America gives us skanks like Madonna, Spears, and GaGa (she's no lady). What the hell, if you're as talent-free as our top skanks, you've got to make up for it by doing disgusting things to stay in the limelight.
@wiseroldfart - Well, Sissel may be the best and loveliest of them all, but we do have a bunch of class acts here in the USA, such as Alison Krauss. Great voice with top-notch band. Check her out on YouTube here: /watch?v=QjsjZWlRVvo
@KingOfErehwon: I know we've got better singers over here than the skanks I mentioned. But are they anywhere near as famous? I never heard of Krauss. I keep hearing about GaGa's raw meat outfits and which airport she fell down in each week in which pair of ridiculous platform shoes. I wonder if they're touching HER junk at airports...
@wiseroldfart - I suppose Alison Krauss isn't as famous as other pop singers, but she is indeed still pretty famous! She has sung at concerts for at least two presidents that I know of, is very classy, extremely well-educated musically, and has a sensational voice. Seriously, check out the link I provided you below. You won't be disappointed. And there are others that can greatly overcome our embarrassment of the Gaga's we present to the world. But, I admit, we do need Sissels of our own.
AWESOME AWESOME !!!!!!

@KingOfErehwon: I get the impression that he's a drugged-out loser - the type whose greatest desire is to eat one of GaGa's raw meat dresses as soon as she throws it out a window.
wiseroldfart 1 year ago

THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
jbcolorguardgrl563 1 year ago

The Shenandoah is a river that flows in two states,Virginia and Maryland and then into the Potomac which flows through Washington DC...

Funny, this is an American folk song, not Norwegian.
dylki 1 year ago
@dylki - Well - she doesn't say that it is - she says that she "learned it from an old norwegian fisherman"... He might have learned it from America - maybe he was a sailor in his young days visting the US or meeting americans ... :)
yogi4life 1 year ago
@yogi4life Wrong. She does not say "old norwegian fisherman", what she says is she "learned it from an old fisherman in the southern part of Norway". She never said the fisherman was Norwegian. Please pay attention. All of you. I would at least expect those of you who have english/american as your native tounge to get this right.
Svendsor 1 year ago
@Svendsor Yes - you're absolutely right - I misquoted her and actually thought that this old fisherman from the southern part of Norway was norwegian - but you are right - she doesn't say that... But my point is that she is not saying that this is a "norwegian" folk song or folk tune... She only says that she learned from an old fisherman in the southern part of Norway - and obviously "Shennandoa" (I don't know if that is the right spelling...) has obviously nothing to do with Norway...
yogi4life 1 year ago
@yogi4life Exactly. That was what I was trying to explain. This is not a norwegian folk song at all.
Svendsor 1 year ago

Vocalallusive 1 year ago
The pureness of her voice reflects a Soul in complete harmony with her Creator. She fills the senses with effortless, clear and truly inspiring song. Simply beautiful in every way.
MrPaulDavenport 1 year ago 3
I tried to look up the word, "angelic", in the dictionary. Next to the word, there was no text, just Sissel's picture.
KingOfErehwon 1 year ago 33
@KingOfErehwon can't agree more!
alexhkleung 1 year ago 3
@KingOfErehwon: Sissel sings it better than anyone. I first heard Jo Stafford sing it. The orchestral arrangement in Stafford's rendition appealed to me more than her singing. If you put Sissel's voice with a lush orchestral arrangement similar to Stafford's, you'll have made a timeless classic that can't be beat.
wiseroldfart 1 year ago
@wiseroldfart - You are right. The arrangement with Stafford is preferable, and I usually like the orchestral arrangements with Sissel. Check out the arrangement of Over the Rainbow with Sissel here on YouTube for a wonderful variation of that old favorite. She also has some great small band arrangements with some new songs. If you haven't already, check out her new songs, "Miss You Now" and "Close To You."
KingOfErehwon 1 year ago
@KingOfErehwon: Thank you for pointing out a few of her performances. I had been planning on listening to everything by her on YouTube when I had a chance. I've already listened to all the great tenors and several great sopranos. A voice like Sissel's deserves to be recorded as accurately as possible to please even the fussiest audiophile. Of course, the orchestra also needs to be recorded perfectly.
wiseroldfart 1 year ago
@wiseroldfart - As you see, she has the bucks to get the best bands and orchestras money can buy. Now, if we could only convince the Norwegians to make more Sissels the world would be a better and happier place. I figure every guy should have a Sissel of his own. That should be about right, don't you think?
KingOfErehwon 1 year ago
@KingOfErehwon: Norway gives us the beautiful Sissel. Canada gives us the lovely Celine. America gives us skanks like Madonna, Spears, and GaGa (she's no lady). What the hell, if you're as talent-free as our top skanks, you've got to make up for it by doing disgusting things to stay in the limelight.
wiseroldfart 1 year ago
@wiseroldfart - Well, Sissel may be the best and loveliest of them all, but we do have a bunch of class acts here in the USA, such as Alison Krauss. Great voice with top-notch band. Check her out on YouTube here: /watch?v=QjsjZWlRVvo
KingOfErehwon 1 year ago
@KingOfErehwon: I know we've got better singers over here than the skanks I mentioned. But are they anywhere near as famous? I never heard of Krauss. I keep hearing about GaGa's raw meat outfits and which airport she fell down in each week in which pair of ridiculous platform shoes. I wonder if they're touching HER junk at airports...
wiseroldfart 1 year ago
@wiseroldfart - I suppose Alison Krauss isn't as famous as other pop singers, but she is indeed still pretty famous! She has sung at concerts for at least two presidents that I know of, is very classy, extremely well-educated musically, and has a sensational voice. Seriously, check out the link I provided you below. You won't be disappointed. And there are others that can greatly overcome our embarrassment of the Gaga's we present to the world. But, I admit, we do need Sissels of our own.
