Saw them live at the Ritz in New York City 86 or 87. Gorgeous show. Love this band. I can sing a long with most of their songs and still don't know what they are singing about, It doesn't matter though.
The best thing about the Human League is that their image was human, not overly slick as you might have expected for synth pop. They could be warm and humourous as well as serious. This is probably why their producer Martin Rushent thought that the synthesizer would end the reign of the guitar virtuoso. The Edge, Van Halen, the hair bands and the jam bands, etc proved him wrong as if there was any doubt. Dance pop and rock continued on their separate ways.
@59joetsjoep Twas Donald Campbell in the Bluebird allaways sad too see a fellow human lose his life but he had a dream & passion & followed it to it's conclusion
As the ezekiel13 says... agreed. Okay, not the most intellectual band ever IMO but in terms of people credibility and awareness, they score a musical and atmospheric 10 for me.
Check out the rest. This song is the most special, if quite not the best. That's what happens when you grow up to music I guess. It's all personal right?
Went through 100 AA batteries and wore out the tape listening to this one in my walkman back in the summer of '83. WOW what great memories. Thank heaven for iPods. The kids today don;t know how lucky they are.
@utpunkster they are lucky indeed but not when it comes to the music they are growing up to, WE were lucky to have bands like these to mark our teens :)
Yes you are right, the song is about adam ant who was highly publacised at the time, "Mirror Man" refering to the uk newspaper. I dont know why people thumbs you down
Well, I would say the vast majority of people there were under 18 (me included), so it perhaps wasn't as appreciated as it might have been. Still, it was an awesome show, lots of energy.
if they sing this and someone uploads from any v festival where they are playing east to west i will defo post on my channel. chances are they prob wont sing it . top clip tho
The basic premise is that Oakey is a ghost of a performer who has died suddenly, and now inhabits a theatre where he reveals himself to a band (Human League) who have come to rehearse. The video is filmed on location at a deserted theatre in London. The main scenes are of Oakey in a dressing room singing to a mirror. Footage of the crash and death of John Cobb (whilst attempting to break the world water speed record on Loch Ness 29 September 1952) is spliced in with Oakey's dressing room scene.
I was born in 1971, lucky to experience the 80s scene in Toronto, Ont., Canada, this song brings back so many happy memories...gosh they dont make music like they did back then...
WOW...what an MTV flashback I've just had!? Does anyone remember hearing the story about that old black & white boat crashing clip in this video? I recall that some guy was trying to break the speed record on Loch Ness and a "disturbance" in the water created by YOU KNOW WHO basically caused the crash. ????
can someone who went to see them on tour tell me if they sang "Mirror Man"? I personally think this is one of their most well written and underrated songs.
I agree with your assessment on "Mirror Man". I fell in love with this one the first time I heard it. It's my personal favorite. The backup vocals (even though they're just ooohs and aaahs) set the mood for the song.
Va. Beach 2 days ago. They were outstanding as were the rest of the groups in the Regeneration Tour. I highly recommend going if they come to your area.

Just saw Human League last night in concert at the famous Cape Cod Melody Tent. They are on the "Regeneration Tour," along with Naked Eyes, A Flock of Seagulls, ABC, and Belinda Carlisle.
I love this band just not this particular song. I much preferred their other songs to this one. I just wish they would tour in Canada they play the US but not here.
The Human League are still going strong today they are touring the USA in August. Those girls still look really cute (for 40 somethings), but Phil Oakey shaves his head now, look them up on wikipeda
i remember being about 12 yrs old at school aswll as firedrills we had a drill in case we got attacked with nukes, the drill was to get under a table ha ha ha hilarious now but scary at the time
All that "Protect and Survive" guff. You were supposed to block outer doors and windows, build an inner shelter from say doors and sandbags and arrange provisions for 14 days - all in 4 minutes! Now, we're older but still appreciate the sound.
