A love story helps character progression, and especially in a movie like rounders it shows how our protagonists "shady" profession affects his life. Now today with all the publicity sure, poker as a profession isnt frawned upon as much as when this movie was release, but back then it was the most obvious dillemma to put our hero in.

It wouldve been a huge suprise if they hadnt included a love story, although they shouldve written it a lot better and not make her seem like a narrow minded bitc..
