Lego NXT plays the piano

i want to do a project like this for my self, how exactly does it know where to go next if it isnt hardcoded, is there an algorithm to detect what note is played and where it is relative to the rest of the keys?

heres a better idea match peg up with EACH key and program it to hit which one you nedd to hit instead of tap, tap, tap not hearing a rythym so itll be like a real pianoist just having fingers for every key

its also hard coming up with 88 motors on the nxt! a suggestion would be to use two motors to press keys while only one to pace the board. that way, it can play tunes with more continuity.
