i personally think that 80`s iron mike was the best boxer! he would have killed any man in the ring, as much as i love ali i think a peak tyson would have beaten a peak ali, he was absoloutly savage,
Mike tyson the best!, Aggressive, relentless, intimidating and never backs down even when he's wrong, mike tyson took the gentleman's side out go boxing.
Watch it again... Joe Louis put more opponents down with one punch, than any of the others. Joe Louis could fight inside, and outside. Joe Louis was quicker, and had better balance. Joe Louis was big enough to compete with today's giants. Joe Louis was the greatest heavyweight.
On the other hand, some great boxers have no videos available. Sam Langford, Jack Johnson, to name a couple. Even Jack Dempsey deserves mention.
@sabah2177 for me i think, frazier was the best 'cause he was a warrior, he never gave up, had a good defense, good skills, and impressive left hook, tyson was better in his prime he had everything, skills, defense, powerfull... but only for few years so thats why i said 2nd, foreman was fuckin powerfull, (the more pewerfull of all time i think) and ali just had a good skill, but not really powerfull, not a good defense, he was just a good spokesman, thats just my opinion (sorry for my enlish):)
@francedabord1 no doubt frazier was a great boxer , but he wasnt the greatest of all time . Ali was quicker , stronger and was a better boxer than frazier , he deserves a no.6 rank in my list , next to tyson.. and BTW Ali knocked out foreman cold in zaire , so how can you put foreman above ali ? well my list is . 1.Ali , 2.Joe louis , 3.marciano , 4.Foreman , 5.Tyson , 6.Frazier 7. Lennox lewis 8. Jack dempsey ,9.holmes 10.Holyfield
@sabah2177 In Zaire, Foreman got up from Ali's knockdown at 11 seconds. I think George was more exhausted than hurt. In the 4 years leading up to fight with Ali, Foreman had KO'd all his opponents in 2 rounds or less so he was'nt used to fighting in the later rounds at that point in his career and Ali was.
@francedabord1 roy jones jr??? but ali beat frazier 2 out of 3 times foreman ko frazier 2 times and ali ko foremen. frazier is 1 and 4 agents ali and foreman.
@1899sharkey When Tyson was Tyson, there was no way to stop him, he's the most dominant fighter ever, nobody in all boxing history can beat Mike in his prime.
@MrPasqualinho I think you overestimate his ability. Tyson peaked when the Heavy Weight division had a paucity of true talent. Every fight he had against a later legitimate contender he lost.
At the height of his career he was an undersized heavy weight beating up tomato cans.
@PorterPickUp "Every fight he had against a later legitimate contender" what about Toney Tucker ? wasnt he a legitimate contender ? What about Berbick ? What about Biggs ?
Im sure you think these were bums. But had Tyson beaten Holyfield and Lewis, im sure you would call those "bums" also.
It does stir intrigue to compare fighters from different era's and ponder what would have happened had they met in their primes, but to pick just one as the best ever with authority is impossible - it's only our opinion after all. They all had unique styles, but largely fought different men who offered different levels of competition. Those opponents who were common among them were for the most-part fought at different times in their career, so they can't really figure. Here's my pnny's worth:
All were great but Louis is the best HW. To those of you who think it's Ali, you need to look up Willie Pep. Pep used 'Ali's' style first, it's really his. A fun fact is that they trained in the exact same gym.
1.-Joe Louis. 2- Jack Dempsey 3 - Rocky Marciano. 4.- Muhammed Ali. 5- George Foreman. 6 - Larry Holmes 7 - Evander Holyfield 8 - Mike Tyson 9 Jack Johnson 10 - Joe Frazier.
Just my opinion based on years as champion, dominant in era and common opponents :)
I like this video because it is describes the real situation. STOP SAYING X BOXER IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIMES! THEY WERE ALL GREAT! WHY DO YOU NEED TO MAKE SOMEONE THE GREATEST?
@jessiejames1600 you may not like hollyfield but you cant deny his credintials nor the great fighters he's faught, he's faught more good fighters than tyson
@dirtyjew1974 I agree dude. What else did Evander have to prove himself - especially to these Tyson kool-aiders. He fought better fighters than Tyson and killed Tyson twice. Tyson never even stepped up to fight Bowe or Foreman when Holyfield fought them both. He is certainly above Tyson all time imo.
@aitraining you got that right, holyfield has faught succesfully everyone that beat tyson(exeption lewis)and faught much better opposition, i dont think theres a point in time where he wouldnt have beaten tyson really, i just think tyson came along at the right time during his tear.
@dirtyjew1974 Well said. But I'll add Evander never feared him bro. That was the secret. Like Douglas in Tokyo, if u squared Tyson up and fought him with mechanics and black eyes - u can beat him and pretty easliy if u stayed the course.
to me , the greatest fighter that ever lived is also the greatest man that ever lived , brave , to give up his title for something he believed in , to stand up to a government in the 60s, charasmatic , witty , supreme self confidence , fast hands , great footwork, handsome, generous, approachable, loving , a true great, Ali...Tyson was without doubt the most intimidating and exciting fighter , but Ali to me was the greatest.
marciano because he was 13 stone fighting 17 stone guys and destroying them lol, i heard a rumour that one guy tried to guard for a full round and the blood vessels in his arms were popped?
@Flygon289 marciano was without a doubt a true great and up at the top along with joe luise and ali. i cant really pick a greatest since their all great for different reasons but marciano is my favorite!
Holyfield is my fav. of all the modern HWs. I just don't see ANY of the fighters of this era as in the same class as Ali's time. A comparision between Ali and Holy fighting Foreman shows the difference. Ali fights a 24 year old F when he's 32 and faded. Holy meets him when F is 42 and Holy is 28. Ali hits harder, has better hand speed, a tougher chin, and better tactical skills. Holy wails on the old man and has heart, but lacks Ali's tools, even when Ali is much degraded.
Ali, Louis, Holmes, Foreman, Johnson, Liston, Walcott, Frazier, Charles and Tunney would be my picks. Marciano had very little competition, his best challengers were grandpas. Tyson was a great puncher and a great guy toi watch, but I personally don't think he makes the cut due to inconsistant heart and zany production.
Ali was the closest to the perfect fighter- Heart, Chin, Footwork, Reflexes and great combinations. He fought in the golden era. Never was a better group of boxers-ever.
@dukstuf No Holyfield? He fought every and any challenger, sure he didn't have the greatest record, but he fought every worthy opponent during his time.
as much as i like tyson and he is great, anbody who considers him the greatest is foolish. as much as i respect marciano, joe frazier was better. ali is the best and louis is 2
@messier991102 you're right about tyson, but marciano would have killed frazier. Ali also believed the one man he'd have the most trouble with would be Marciano
@KiprosPAO dont be ridiculous, how can marciano kill a man,who is faster, harder to hit,has equal power heart and stamina, and puts on more pressure,im not gonna argue though.but if anybody is gonna lose its rocky, two of the most fearless men trading but one is faster and much harder to hit advantage goes to him
@messier991102 How can you justify claims that he has more heart when Marciano never lost when involved in numerous wars? As for power, again where does this claim come from? Marciano had a higher KO ratio then Frazier. His feet weren't as quick but he was great at cutting off the ring. Obviously we're only discussing opinions here & i respect yours but my money def would have been on Marciano
@KiprosPAO i never siad he had more heart or ower i siad those areas and stamina was equal. yes marciano was great at cutting off the ring but joe was much quicker overall and got the job done faster
The media decides who is the greatest because MOST people are sheep &believe what they're told 2 believe. Take Vitali Klitschko for e.g he has the best KO % in history of HW divsion. He has also never "really" lost a fight. He was stopped on a cut vs Lewis when he wanted to continue &was ahead on points. In the other 2 he had to retire with a shoulder injury again when winning. Yet he isn't given the respect he deserves. If media start portraying him as great fans would hail him as a great
@JustDoIt1017 He was beating Lewis &would have taken him out, hence the reason Lewis refused a rematch &opted to retire instead. Who did Tyson ever beat that was genuinely top class then? Holyfield? No lost to him twice. Lewis? No. The only real noticeable name on Tyson's record is Spinks &even Spinks was fairly unproven, i mean his highlight was a SD vs a 37 year old Holmes. Tyson is a product of media hype, any top class tall fighter with good footwork &a sharp jab would handle him
@KiprosPAO lmao so are you counting his loss against lewis as a win? As far as credible fights, tyson doesnt have that much but neither does vitali. however, tyson's performance in the ring is way more impressive than vitali. Thats why hes mentioned in the greatest heavyweight discussion.
The thing about knownothing Tyson nuthuggers is that not only are they all stupid but apparently blind. Fuck... the guy couldn't adapt to save his ass. There is one guy more overated than the tin man... Kevin Rooney
What are you basing this on??? I seriously wanna know. Did you see his fights with Tucker, Smith or Tillis? Tyson NEVER destroyed a tall mobile heavyweight, not one! Look at the Buster fight....excuses aside, he had no clue what to do, or even attempt to do when James didn't fall down, and was actually moving around the ring.
Which of Tyson's fights has you thinking he would beat a 6'5' mobile smart fighter like Lewis.
You do know they used to spar a lot right? Tyson NEVER dropped him.
I'm definitely not going to defend King, he's a selfish ass who uses fighters. That being said, he screwed over Ali too (and many others)..yet he still went on to cement his legacy, and have an incredible career.
Tyson groupies do nothing but make excuses for him, so lame..coulda shoulda mighta..MANY great fighters got screwed over, marriages fail, managers die, jail time etc...they still prevail and become stronger.
You shouldn't have to make so many excuses for someone you rate #1 ever.
Its quite clear tyson was not the same here, What Tyson achieved in his early career (The WBC, WBA & The IBF at just the age of 20 ) !! Thats Remarkable, Lewis achieved That all at the AGE* of 32 !! C'mon that makes it * CRYSTAL CLEAR * ! Tyson defended his Titles ( all three for 5 + years ) Lennox just had 8 title defences & retired While Iron Mike defended it for 3 + years ! Went to jail, Came out & won them all over again C'mon ! Thats why Mike Tyson is A HALL OF FAMER * Lennow Lewis NOT !
One has to take opposition into account when viewing such stats. Lewis defeated Holyfield, Tyson, Vitali, Morrison, Mercer, Rudduck, Tua etc....the opponents Mike was beating in the 80's LITERALLY had careers like 14-21, 10-17, 5-11 (look it up)..then the champions he took the titles from had lost many times, were old, ordinary etc. Each one of them had either already been or were soon to be KO'ed by other fighters just as easily as Mike did it.
You don't need to be a genius to know that mike tyson was the greatest. In fact, you don't even need to be not retarded. Any idiot can see that mike tyson was the greatest. It's that obvious. You can try to make it complicated and feel clever, but if you come up with anyone other than mike you're a fool.
@tommygumport - How come not one boxing historian or expert on planet earth rate Tyson no.1? Are they all fools. I think a better answer is that you're a know nothing wannabe who has immerses hiself in the tin mans highlight reels. What you meant to say is... Anybody who thinks Tyson is the greatest is a borderline retarded, ignorant, uneducated, lowlife, welfare drawing thug. Tyson wasn't even the best of his terrible era.
@tommygumport im sick of guys dogging out mike but tell me what fighter in any era could stop a young focused Tyson??? NOBODY could have & yes I believe that Tyson is the best to ever do it just name me one Heavyweight that had all of the Tools that Tyson had Speed,Power, Head & foot movement, solid chin, visciousness, & a accurate puncher. So dont let 1899sharkey get to you he just mad that nobody know who that bum ass jim jeffries is, this guy dont know that boxing existed after the 1800's.
How about Ali, Holmes, Foreman and Lewis. There's 4 names who would have defeated any version of Tyson. Have you ever seen his fights with Tucker, Smith or Tillis? He struggled with tall defensive fighters who could move a little. You won't find these fights on his fanboy youtube highlights.
Look at the Douglas fight...I know, you have 40 excuses for Mike..fact remains, focused or not, he was clueless what to do against a big mobile fighter who didn't fall down. Same attack over and over.
What are you basing this on? Which of his fights impressed you the most?
Quick, without looking it up (go on the honor system here), tell me who Liston beat to win his title? What year did Jack Johnson win the title? How many defenses did Larry Holmes make? Hell, I bet you can't even tell me one opponent Joe Louis had.
My point? Anyone who ranks Tyson the "best" is ignorant of the sports history. If you're going to call someone the best, you had better know who you're ranking him above.
Video's. I've watched videos of every heavyweight champion since the invention of film. Throw a young, well prepared Tyson in with any of them and he'd knock em out.
You don't need to pay close attention Joe. It's obvious Tyson was better than those guys. I've watch a zillion videos of all of them. Obviously he had some unimpressive fights - EVERYONE does.
@tommygumport - How was Tysons heart? Did he start eating Holyfield because he was hungry? In the biggest fight of his career he eagerly got hiself D.Q.d. Mills lane gave him one free bite and warned him "if you eat anymore of him you're getting d.q.d. This against an old Holyfield, and Tyson wouldn't crack against atgs?Tysons flaws were fatal and would surface against any great heavy. A novice like u cant understand anything u cant see.Just another contendor in the 70's.Dont giv me typicl reply
Hey, everyones entitled to their opinion, you're free to think Mike is the best.
I just don't get what you're basing it on....his explosive KO wins over guys with more losses than they had wins? Fighters who some had been KO'ed even earlier by other fighters? You're too easily impressed, and you obviously don't get the fact that it's easier to look impressive against sub par opponents.
If he was "better" than all the rest, he wouldn't have lost to every decent opponent he had.
Dont need to watch any tapes....I actually watched his fights as they happened. I'm not some kid who only knows him by his well edited youtube highlights.
Funny thing about Tyson groupies, and I'm sure this includes you.
Common comments on Tyson videos are like "He's the best ever, did you see him hitting that tall guy @ 1.31??"...or "who was the guy Tyson KO'ed at 2.34?..man, Mike is the GOAT!"
They haven't a clue that it's Holmes or Spinks..my point is, they're ignorant to the sport. It's a common thread amongst tyson groupies, they have NO idea who they're rating him above...that's the annoying thing about it. It's like Pac fans..lol.
@CoronaJoe you are completely right about Tyson and his "groupies". You are very wrong about Pacman though. I too believe Floyd would have too much for him but it's a fair conversation & dismissing him is unfair. He's a top class fighter by any standard
I didn't dis Pac at all, I dissed his fans. I'm comparing the fans who call Pac the best ever, when they have no idea who Henry Armstrong or Ray Robinson even were, to the Tyson fans, with the common thread being that they have no idea who they're rating their hero above.
Call any fighter the best ever, fine by me, we all have opinions...but to do so, you'd better know who you're rating him above. I was literally asked once by a "TYSON is #1" guy who Sonny Liston was..lol.
Are you mentally challenged? Where did I say I haven't watched in 20 years? I was a boxing fan back then, am now...make a pretty decent living in the sport. I had the fortune of being able to see Tyson's career as it unfolded (saw the olympic trials) right up to it folding. You, on the other hand are some kid who's overly impressed with youtube highlights, and probably havent even seen one complete Tyson fight.
Typical groupie. You just whine and complain, because you can't argue the facts.
Look if you're telling the truth and make a decent living in boxing I have a lot of respect for that. I'm a huge boxing fan. I'm just telling you you're wrong about Tyson. I keep telling you to go back and watch the tape, and you respond with "I don't need to...I was there." You may not like the guy and probably for good reason but he was still the best fighter.
BRUMTOWNTRU AND ILLMATIC826 HAVE FOUND EACH OTHER!! Two complete idiots who can jack each other off while they drool over a "prime" Tyson. You two clowns need to head to Vegas. Tyson in his prime... Tyson in his prime... Tyson in his prime... Rolmfao
@1899sharkey you the last nigga that need to be talking at least Tyson & lewis is known in the world nobody even know who the fuck jim jeffries bum ass is, so go jerk ya little pecker to some old ass jeffries photos Rolmfao
I see this Brumtowntru guy is in here too, telling people to "not respond, cause they don't no boxing" (it's "know" by the way). Way to get along with people dude, can't you just give your opinion, as obviously wrong as it is, and just discuss it like an adult?
Mike was a talented, powerful, fast heavyweight, but he had nowhere near the overall skill, and definitely nowhere near the career to be mentioned alongside Ali, Louis, Holmes, Foreman, Lewis and Johnson.
at the end ... Lennox Lewis beat Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Vitali Klitschko ... we all have to respect this ... he is the best fighter of this era. Ok, his stile was not so spectacular ... but he is the best ... no doubt.
Ya, he left Rooney... the awesome trainer, who's led so many greats to greatness! LMAO, Rooney was average at best, has done nothing since or before Tyson.
All the excuses you make..yet, MANY other greats can have 4 or 5 trainers throughout their career, go to jail, have 3 wives, crooked promoters, take time off to fight a war, yet still go on to greatness.
Mike gets excuses made for him because he wasn't GOOD enough to make it any further than he did. A true great needs no excuses!
Nobody? Have you seen the Douglas fight. Mike was 23 years old, and clueless what to do...a guy with "all the tools" would have figured out how to defeat Douglas. Mike never once changed his game plan, just kept attempting the same attack over and over..the attack that worked on scared 40 year olds suddenly became useless.
Tyson groupies crack me up...all woulda couldas, no logic at all. You kids mistake "fav" fighter with "best" fighter. You like him best, that doesn't make him the best.
mike tyson ducked every contender of his era, foreman bowe morrison that fool had potential but he threw it away, ali never he faught some of the hardest punchers ever. shavers liston foreman frazier,
@MrLukedanger what do you no tyson never ducked foreman bowe or morrison tyson got out of jail he was gunna fight bowe bowe got beat up by golota 2 times so the fight never happened he was gunna fight morrison but morrison got diagnosed with HIV in 96 and foreman was not no contender he was 48 years old and just looking for paydays why would tyson wanna beat him up for at that time foreman had no belts so why give him the payday
@feuerwassergeist the klitschko's are good fighters the older one is the better fighter but they are not even in the top 20 Greatest Heavyweights they are just lucky that no great heavys are about right now and vitali would beat lewis but lewis is not really a true great
@BRUMTOWNTRU ... loool ... Lewis is not a true great ??? ... He beat Tyson, Holyfield, V: Klitschko, Bruno, Grant, Morrison, Golota, Botha, Rahman, Briggs ... and so on ... he beat everyone ... even the fighters who beat him ... he was olympia-champion and beats Riddick Bowe ... so, what must he do, that you call him a real champion??? ... In my opinion he is one of the 3 Top heavyweights of all time.
@feuerwassergeist man lewis punk ass fought people on the tail end of they career ESPECIALLY Mike Tyson, Lewis ducked Tyson until Tyson was old & didn't have anything left HELL the whole world know that, & tell me why all of the media & boxing fans All Around said that that was the fight that came too late, & even lewis said that back in Tysons prime "the guy was a animal who would want to fight him" proof that lewis was scared of tyson Look It Up if you dont believe me, Tyson was the coldest
@illmatic826 ... i also think that tyson was the greatest in his prime ... he was a phenomenon. ... But in the Tyson vs Lewis fight, Lennox was still older than Tyson , so over all ... Tysons stile is the problem ... yes in his time he was unbeatable ... and i think he (in his prime) would beat all the champs in their prime ... but at the end of the story Lewis is the one who beat everyone ... If you want to be succussful with Tysons stile you must be on the absolute top level of your ability.
@feuerwassergeist when Tyson fought lewis he was no where near his prime & he was just fighting for a paycheck even Tyson said himself that he knew he was going to lose vs lewis cause his best day was behind him & he didn't love the sport anymore.
How do you figure Lewis ducked Tyson, when in fact it was Tyson who paid a stepaside fee to Lewis? He wanted nothing to do with him, and we all saw why. Actually most of us KNEW why before the fight even happened.
Lewis never feared Tyson at all...they sparred many times back in the day...Lewis would have fought him any time, and would have beat him too.
@CoronaJoe never heard of no stepaside fee but you really gotta have your head up your ass if you really think that lewis could of stopped Tyson back in his hay day, stepaside fee or not lewis would of been destroyed like everybody else, & if you even saw that Tyson vs lewis fight you would see that Tyson was slow, out of shape, slow head movement, AND was on drugs, that dont sound shit like a prime Tyson so I wouldn't even celebrate that fluke ass lewis victory. Tyson's legacy is still better.
Look it up, Tyson paid Lewis $4mill to avoid him. Tyson was also quoted after the Lewis fight, "I could never have beaten him, too big and strong".
People will remember Mike more than Lennox years from now, you're right...but for all the wrong reasons.
His legacy?? Who was your fav Tyson opponent, who did he beat that made you think, wow BEST of all time? You know, like Ali beating Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Liston etc....name your most impressive Tyson win.
@CoronaJoe All of his wins was my favorite, I know you is just a bias Tyson hater but 100 years from now who is still gonna be remembered Tyson & Ali thats who you may hate tyson so what haters like you dont define how great he was yeah lennox lewis beat his ass & Tyson said that he could of never beat him YEAH RIGHT if you buy that then you just stupid, come on dogg Tyson from the 80's vs ANY version of lennox lewis you know just as well as me that lennox lewis would get his ass destroyed.
Tyson hater?? I saw everyone of his fights as they happened, was and am a huge Tyson fan...I'm not some kid who only knows him from his youtube videos and thinks Sonny Liston was married to Cher...lmao...not a hater.
I'm just knowledgable on boxing and I'm not naive. I know where he belongs on an all time list, and it's behind the real greats.
Lewis and Tyson sparred in the 80's, Mike didn't hurt him at all....and yes, Mike did say he could never have beaten him...search, it's on youtube.
@feuerwassergeist fuck off and don't reply im being nice you don't no shit about boxing he was a good fighter not a great holyfield and tyson are greats and Bruno, Grant, Morrison, Golota, Botha, Rahman, Briggs are average at best now fuck off if you think lewis is in the top 3 you can think that but you don't no shit
@BRUMTOWNTRU ... who old are you? ... i saw the tyson fights, the holyfield fights and the lewis fights in the late 80`s and early 90`s ... i mean the original stuff ... not the vids on youtube and shit like that ... i see the fighters from Tyson to Klitschko and i mean that i have a little knowledge about boxing ... so, like we say it in our country ... Fick dich ins Knie du kleiner Wichser ! ...
@BRUMTOWNTRU ... and that the Klitschkos are not even in your top 20, it is also unbeleaveable ... V. Klitschko was never realy beaten, only two times by injurys. He is a true and big champ, also his bother. W. Klitschkos stile of boxing is nearly perfect, and so he is nearly unbeatable. Both of them are in the Top ten of all time heav.champs. The only problem the Klitschkos has is, they are not americans. So they could ko 100 fighters in a raw, the am. & british people would say it is luck.
Klitscho might, but in reality he is the under dog, not as, gud, Lewis would have still won beacase he was breaking his face, Klitscho was getting dizzy and losing blood, I don't know if Klitscho would have lasted iek that, And fighjters liek ALi and Louis woulf KO Lewis who Ko'ed Klistcho man.
Ali exposed the racism and corruption of the US gov't and its being exposed even more now.
Tyson didn't do half those thigns either, he was raised an orphan in the streets he is a gud fighter that had a tough Life but Ali would still dominate him.
ALI THE KING OF THE RING...#2JOE LOUIS #3 ROCKY MARICANO #4 JACK JOHNSON #5 JACK DEMPSEY #6 MIKE TYSON #7LARRY HOLMES #8 SONNY LISTON #9GEORGE FOREMAN #10 EVANDER HOLYFIELD....I MET SOME OF THESE FIGHTERS AT A BOXING SHOW IN ALTANTIC CITY ...GREW UP WATCH ALI ON WORLD WIDE SPORTS[CHANNEL 7 IN THE 60S] ALI IS AND ALWAYS WILL B THE KING OF THE HEAVYS AND THE RING ...LONG LIVE THE KING!!!!!
a better question is muhammad ali with no 3 1/2 year layoff would have fought the other 4 would they have landed more than a dozen blows before ali completely destroyed them in 9 or less rounds. yes ali was that good but it all gets blurred because of the 3 1/2 year layoff.
Ali outboxed and outclassed giants of his time....Like Sonny Liston, Frazier and Foreman...!! He brought a different Grace and Style into boxing...!! A class never before seen...!! ...So Graceful, So Lethal and so Technical....!! Boxers like Ali have never come nor will ever come again....!! Just like
Bruce Lee in Martial Arts....Elvis in Music......Ali has reached a position which will always be forever like Mount Everest in this world....!!
@jjaganreddy Yes you are right about bruce lee- he was the greatest martial artist but on film. Elvis? see that he copied black music, information I got from the biography channel i dont think so. the programme said as a kid he hung out side black churches and bars!
imo joe louis

Watch it again... Joe Louis put more opponents down with one punch, than any of the others. Joe Louis could fight inside, and outside. Joe Louis was quicker, and had better balance. Joe Louis was big enough to compete with today's giants. Joe Louis was the greatest heavyweight.
On the other hand, some great boxers have no videos available. Sam Langford, Jack Johnson, to name a couple. Even Jack Dempsey deserves mention.

The best heavyweight of all time? "Iron" Mike Tyson...
MrPasqualinho 4 months ago
@MrPasqualinho - He's not even the best of his era!
1899sharkey 4 months ago
@1899sharkey When Tyson was Tyson, there was no way to stop him, he's the most dominant fighter ever, nobody in all boxing history can beat Mike in his prime.
MrPasqualinho 4 months ago
@MrPasqualinho I think you overestimate his ability. Tyson peaked when the Heavy Weight division had a paucity of true talent. Every fight he had against a later legitimate contender he lost.
At the height of his career he was an undersized heavy weight beating up tomato cans.
PorterPickUp 4 months ago
@PorterPickUp So, who's the GOAT in your opinion?
MrPasqualinho 4 months ago

RPM11111 4 months ago
This list presumes the best heavyweights had to have held an officially recognised title and that the others couldn't do what they did best:
Longevity & dominance - Joe Louis
Explosive power - Mike Tyson
Skull crushing power (it's different) - George Foreman/Rocky Marciano
Flare and speed - Muhammad Ali
Best Jab - Larry Holmes/Lennox Lewis (Ali's was good, but lacked authority)
Best combinations - Evander Holyfield
For what it's worth, the most Underrated - Larry Holmes/Lennox Lewis
RPM11111 4 months ago
All were great but Louis is the best HW. To those of you who think it's Ali, you need to look up Willie Pep. Pep used 'Ali's' style first, it's really his. A fun fact is that they trained in the exact same gym.
crowley0312 4 months ago
No doubt. Mohammad Ali. He was different. His style, courage, character make him the best of all time.
Dadash8525 4 months ago
1.-Joe Louis. 2- Jack Dempsey 3 - Rocky Marciano. 4.- Muhammed Ali. 5- George Foreman. 6 - Larry Holmes 7 - Evander Holyfield 8 - Mike Tyson 9 Jack Johnson 10 - Joe Frazier.
Just my opinion based on years as champion, dominant in era and common opponents :)

dirtyjew1974 5 months ago
@dirtyjew1974 I agree dude. What else did Evander have to prove himself - especially to these Tyson kool-aiders. He fought better fighters than Tyson and killed Tyson twice. Tyson never even stepped up to fight Bowe or Foreman when Holyfield fought them both. He is certainly above Tyson all time imo.
aitraining 4 months ago
@aitraining you got that right, holyfield has faught succesfully everyone that beat tyson(exeption lewis)and faught much better opposition, i dont think theres a point in time where he wouldnt have beaten tyson really, i just think tyson came along at the right time during his tear.
dirtyjew1974 4 months ago
@dirtyjew1974 Well said. But I'll add Evander never feared him bro. That was the secret. Like Douglas in Tokyo, if u squared Tyson up and fought him with mechanics and black eyes - u can beat him and pretty easliy if u stayed the course.

to me , the greatest fighter that ever lived is also the greatest man that ever lived , brave , to give up his title for something he believed in , to stand up to a government in the 60s, charasmatic , witty , supreme self confidence , fast hands , great footwork, handsome, generous, approachable, loving , a true great, Ali...Tyson was without doubt the most intimidating and exciting fighter , but Ali to me was the greatest.
grumpyguts1967 6 months ago

Marciano and Evander
Drovki 6 months ago
Holyfield is my fav. of all the modern HWs. I just don't see ANY of the fighters of this era as in the same class as Ali's time. A comparision between Ali and Holy fighting Foreman shows the difference. Ali fights a 24 year old F when he's 32 and faded. Holy meets him when F is 42 and Holy is 28. Ali hits harder, has better hand speed, a tougher chin, and better tactical skills. Holy wails on the old man and has heart, but lacks Ali's tools, even when Ali is much degraded.
Both great fights.
dukstuf 6 months ago
Ali, Louis, Holmes, Foreman, Johnson, Liston, Walcott, Frazier, Charles and Tunney would be my picks. Marciano had very little competition, his best challengers were grandpas. Tyson was a great puncher and a great guy toi watch, but I personally don't think he makes the cut due to inconsistant heart and zany production.
Ali was the closest to the perfect fighter- Heart, Chin, Footwork, Reflexes and great combinations. He fought in the golden era. Never was a better group of boxers-ever.
dukstuf 6 months ago
@dukstuf No Holyfield? He fought every and any challenger, sure he didn't have the greatest record, but he fought every worthy opponent during his time.

messier991102 6 months ago
@messier991102 you're right about tyson, but marciano would have killed frazier. Ali also believed the one man he'd have the most trouble with would be Marciano
KiprosPAO 6 months ago
@KiprosPAO dont be ridiculous, how can marciano kill a man,who is faster, harder to hit,has equal power heart and stamina, and puts on more pressure,im not gonna argue though.but if anybody is gonna lose its rocky, two of the most fearless men trading but one is faster and much harder to hit advantage goes to him
messier991102 6 months ago
@messier991102 How can you justify claims that he has more heart when Marciano never lost when involved in numerous wars? As for power, again where does this claim come from? Marciano had a higher KO ratio then Frazier. His feet weren't as quick but he was great at cutting off the ring. Obviously we're only discussing opinions here & i respect yours but my money def would have been on Marciano
KiprosPAO 6 months ago
@KiprosPAO i never siad he had more heart or ower i siad those areas and stamina was equal. yes marciano was great at cutting off the ring but joe was much quicker overall and got the job done faster

retsevlyslegyn 6 months ago
The media decides who is the greatest because MOST people are sheep &believe what they're told 2 believe. Take Vitali Klitschko for e.g he has the best KO % in history of HW divsion. He has also never "really" lost a fight. He was stopped on a cut vs Lewis when he wanted to continue &was ahead on points. In the other 2 he had to retire with a shoulder injury again when winning. Yet he isn't given the respect he deserves. If media start portraying him as great fans would hail him as a great
KiprosPAO 6 months ago
@KiprosPAO lmao all the guys he ko'd were nobodies.
JustDoIt1017 6 months ago
@JustDoIt1017 He was beating Lewis &would have taken him out, hence the reason Lewis refused a rematch &opted to retire instead. Who did Tyson ever beat that was genuinely top class then? Holyfield? No lost to him twice. Lewis? No. The only real noticeable name on Tyson's record is Spinks &even Spinks was fairly unproven, i mean his highlight was a SD vs a 37 year old Holmes. Tyson is a product of media hype, any top class tall fighter with good footwork &a sharp jab would handle him
KiprosPAO 6 months ago
@KiprosPAO lmao so are you counting his loss against lewis as a win? As far as credible fights, tyson doesnt have that much but neither does vitali. however, tyson's performance in the ring is way more impressive than vitali. Thats why hes mentioned in the greatest heavyweight discussion.

Dont let Youtube highlight videos fool you.
CoronaJoe 7 months ago
You don't need to be a genius to know that mike tyson was the greatest. In fact, you don't even need to be not retarded. Any idiot can see that mike tyson was the greatest. It's that obvious. You can try to make it complicated and feel clever, but if you come up with anyone other than mike you're a fool.
tommygumport 7 months ago
@tommygumport - How come not one boxing historian or expert on planet earth rate Tyson no.1? Are they all fools. I think a better answer is that you're a know nothing wannabe who has immerses hiself in the tin mans highlight reels. What you meant to say is... Anybody who thinks Tyson is the greatest is a borderline retarded, ignorant, uneducated, lowlife, welfare drawing thug. Tyson wasn't even the best of his terrible era.
1899sharkey 7 months ago
@tommygumport im sick of guys dogging out mike but tell me what fighter in any era could stop a young focused Tyson??? NOBODY could have & yes I believe that Tyson is the best to ever do it just name me one Heavyweight that had all of the Tools that Tyson had Speed,Power, Head & foot movement, solid chin, visciousness, & a accurate puncher. So dont let 1899sharkey get to you he just mad that nobody know who that bum ass jim jeffries is, this guy dont know that boxing existed after the 1800's.
illmatic826 7 months ago
How about Ali, Holmes, Foreman and Lewis. There's 4 names who would have defeated any version of Tyson. Have you ever seen his fights with Tucker, Smith or Tillis? He struggled with tall defensive fighters who could move a little. You won't find these fights on his fanboy youtube highlights.
Look at the Douglas fight...I know, you have 40 excuses for Mike..fact remains, focused or not, he was clueless what to do against a big mobile fighter who didn't fall down. Same attack over and over.
CoronaJoe 7 months ago
What are you basing this on? Which of his fights impressed you the most?
Quick, without looking it up (go on the honor system here), tell me who Liston beat to win his title? What year did Jack Johnson win the title? How many defenses did Larry Holmes make? Hell, I bet you can't even tell me one opponent Joe Louis had.
My point? Anyone who ranks Tyson the "best" is ignorant of the sports history. If you're going to call someone the best, you had better know who you're ranking him above.
CoronaJoe 7 months ago
@CoronaJoe
Video's. I've watched videos of every heavyweight champion since the invention of film. Throw a young, well prepared Tyson in with any of them and he'd knock em out.
tommygumport 7 months ago
You should pay closer attention to the Ali, Holmes, Lewis, Foreman, Louis and Johnson clips....
Tyson would be a great matchup with Liston, Frazier and Holyfield....that's why he's a solid 8-10 all time.
Tyson couldn't KO Tucker, Smith, Tillis, Douglas etc....no way he stops Foreman or Lewis.
CoronaJoe 7 months ago
@CoronaJoe
You don't need to pay close attention Joe. It's obvious Tyson was better than those guys. I've watch a zillion videos of all of them. Obviously he had some unimpressive fights - EVERYONE does.
tommygumport 7 months ago
@tommygumport - How was Tysons heart? Did he start eating Holyfield because he was hungry? In the biggest fight of his career he eagerly got hiself D.Q.d. Mills lane gave him one free bite and warned him "if you eat anymore of him you're getting d.q.d. This against an old Holyfield, and Tyson wouldn't crack against atgs?Tysons flaws were fatal and would surface against any great heavy. A novice like u cant understand anything u cant see.Just another contendor in the 70's.Dont giv me typicl reply
1899sharkey 7 months ago
Hey, everyones entitled to their opinion, you're free to think Mike is the best.
I just don't get what you're basing it on....his explosive KO wins over guys with more losses than they had wins? Fighters who some had been KO'ed even earlier by other fighters? You're too easily impressed, and you obviously don't get the fact that it's easier to look impressive against sub par opponents.
If he was "better" than all the rest, he wouldn't have lost to every decent opponent he had.

CoronaJoe 7 months ago
@CoronaJoe you are completely right about Tyson and his "groupies". You are very wrong about Pacman though. I too believe Floyd would have too much for him but it's a fair conversation & dismissing him is unfair. He's a top class fighter by any standard
KiprosPAO 6 months ago
I didn't dis Pac at all, I dissed his fans. I'm comparing the fans who call Pac the best ever, when they have no idea who Henry Armstrong or Ray Robinson even were, to the Tyson fans, with the common thread being that they have no idea who they're rating their hero above.
Call any fighter the best ever, fine by me, we all have opinions...but to do so, you'd better know who you're rating him above. I was literally asked once by a "TYSON is #1" guy who Sonny Liston was..lol.
CoronaJoe 6 months ago

Mike gets excuses made for him because he wasn't GOOD enough to make it any further than he did. A true great needs no excuses!
CoronaJoe 7 months ago
Nobody? Have you seen the Douglas fight. Mike was 23 years old, and clueless what to do...a guy with "all the tools" would have figured out how to defeat Douglas. feuerwassergeist 7 months ago
@feuerwassergeist man lewis punk ass fought people on the tail end of they career ESPECIALLY Mike Tyson, Lewis ducked Tyson until Tyson was old & didn't have anything left HELL the whole world know that, & tell me why all of the media & boxing fans All Around said that that was the fight that came too late, & even lewis said that back in Tysons prime "the guy was a animal who would want to fight him" proof that lewis was scared of tyson Look It Up if you dont believe me, Tyson was the coldest
illmatic826 7 months ago
@illmatic826 ... i also think that tyson was the greatest in his prime ... he was a phenomenon. ... But in the Tyson vs Lewis fight, Lennox was still older than Tyson , so over all ... Tysons stile is the problem ... yes in his time he was unbeatable ... and i think he (in his prime) would beat all the champs in their prime ... but at the end of the story Lewis is the one who beat everyone ... If you want to be succussful with Tysons stile you must be on the absolute top level of your ability.
feuerwassergeist 7 months ago
@feuerwassergeist when Tyson fought lewis he was no where near his prime & he was just fighting for a paycheck even Tyson said himself that he knew he was going to lose vs lewis cause his best day was behind him & he didn't love the sport anymore.
illmatic826 7 months ago
How do you figure Lewis ducked Tyson, when in fact it was Tyson who paid a stepaside fee to Lewis? He wanted nothing to do with him, and we all saw why. Actually most of us KNEW why before the fight even happened.
Lewis never feared Tyson at all...they sparred many times back in the day...Lewis would have fought him any time, and would have beat him too.
CoronaJoe 7 months ago
@CoronaJoe never heard of no stepaside fee but you really gotta have your head up your ass if you really think that lewis could of stopped Tyson back in his hay day, stepaside fee or not lewis would of been destroyed like everybody else, & if you even saw that Tyson vs lewis fight you would see that Tyson was slow, out of shape, slow head movement, AND was on drugs, that dont sound shit like a prime Tyson so I wouldn't even celebrate that fluke ass lewis victory. Tyson's legacy is still better.
illmatic826 7 months ago
Look it up, Tyson paid Lewis $4mill to avoid him. Tyson was also quoted after the Lewis fight, "I could never have beaten him, too big and strong".
People will remember Mike more than Lennox years from now, you're right...but for all the wrong reasons.
His legacy?? Who was your fav Tyson opponent, who did he beat that made you think, wow BEST of all time? You know, like Ali beating Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Liston etc....name your most impressive Tyson win.
CoronaJoe 7 months ago
@CoronaJoe All of his wins was my favorite, I know you is just a bias Tyson hater but 100 years from now who is still gonna be remembered Tyson & Ali thats who you may hate tyson so what haters like you dont define how great he was yeah lennox lewis beat his ass & Tyson said that he could of never beat him YEAH RIGHT if you buy that then you just stupid, come on dogg Tyson from the 80's vs ANY version of lennox lewis you know just as well as me that lennox lewis would get his ass destroyed.

Fick dich ins Knie du kleiner Wichser ! ...

@BRUMTOWNTRU lennox lewis only fought bums & guys past their primes

@BRUMTOWNTRU ... and that the Klitschkos are not even in your top 20, it is also unbeleaveable ... V. Klitschko was never realy beaten, only two times by injurys. He is a true and big champ, also his bother. W. Klitschkos stile of boxing is nearly perfect, and so he is nearly unbeatable. Both of them are in the Top ten of all time heav.champs. The only problem the Klitschkos has is, they are not americans. So they could ko 100 fighters in a raw, the am. & british people would say it is luck.

@Innovater6

Ali was an intrinsically boring boxer.....I'l back Tyson or Marciano on the basis of what they brought to the sport.

@MyWildcatfan
Ali exposed the racism and corruption of the US gov't and its being exposed even more now.
Tyson didn't do half those thigns either, he was raised an orphan in the streets he is a gud fighter that had a tough Life but Ali would still dominate him.

a better question is muhammad ali with no 3 1/2 year layoff would have fought the other 4 would they have landed more than a dozen blows before ali completely destroyed them in 9 or less rounds. yes ali was that good but it all gets blurred because of the 3 1/2 year layoff.

what about: sonny liston, joe frazier, george foreman they were great too

Ali outboxed and outclassed giants of his time....Like Sonny Liston, Frazier and Foreman...!! He brought a different Grace and Style into boxing...!! A class never before seen...!! ...So Graceful, So Lethal and so Technical....!! Boxers like Ali have never come nor will ever come again....!! Just like
Bruce Lee in Martial Arts....Elvis in Music......Ali has reached a position which will always be forever like Mount Everest in this world....!!
HE IS THE GREATEST.......!!

@jjaganreddy Yes you are right about bruce lee- he was the greatest martial artist but on film. Elvis? see that he copied black music, information I got from the biography channel i dont think so. the programme said as a kid he hung out side black churches and bars!
