@raptureup : Whatever you want to call it, Guy's music (like Townes') really defies labeling. I've seen him classified as country, folk, Americana, and Texas. Being a 5th generation Texan living in Austin, I like the "Texas" classification, but what's more important is that he's recognized. I've been listening to him since the '70s and have never heard a bad recording or seen a bad performance. He's a true master and a Texas treasure even though he's now in Nashville.
@dawhealer, there's not a truer word than you said. Normally I dislike anything you counted, but here I agree with you to the limit! He's really a Texas treasure!
I watch this and feel like I am looking at art. Every word is a masterpiece of American songwriting. The history of Texas is written in every line on his face.
This is one of the best songs I've ever heard! Ol Guy is a master at writing! I feel sorry for people that never have listened to him, Billy Joe Shaver, and many other here that are never palyed on the dumb radio! :) Thanks for posting this song!
Guy Clarke and Verlon Thompson are awesome songwriters and guitar players, and they're also really nice guys. On a side note, I've also heard Doc Watson play "Colombus Stockade Blues." Guy Clarke was at that show and Doc Watson acknowledged it.
One of my favorite songwriters. Would love to see Guy and Vernon just once in a setting like this. So close and personal, words and music. Couldn't get any better in this life
The Austin Chili Parlor bar invented a Mad Dog Margarita only after Guy made it famous. It's not tequila, but mescal and the first one tastes like shit, but after you accept the taste of shit, they are good. I recommend three if you have a designated driver. Four if you are walking.
Thanks for sharing your voice with the world, Guy. I'm 54 and JUST found out about you. I thought I hated country music but then I realized I wasn't really listening to it from the crap that is played on the radio. You, on the other hand, represent what country is supposed to be about. Thank you.
Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift and the rest of you pop singers with a twang can keep playing your music to the Brokeback Mountain set.
@bill77777776 I don't claim to know Guy, but I would bet my money on the side of his taking exception to a gay slur. Also, he could recognize some value in the work of those two mainstreamers you mention. At least, that's how I get him. As a GC fan, I recognize many of the same elements in their stuff, Tim in his sentiment and Taylor in her songwriting fidelity. I like them all.
If you like REAL music like Guy Clark, and are tired of the same ole same ole on the radio, you might like Chris Knight, Scott Miller, and John Prine, those are 3 of my favorites.
All of Nashville knows that there are no bigger than those three. You don't gage art by money and all artist know that. There are millionaire writers and artist in this town that secretly admire this man for sure!!
I don't doubt that for a second, and I know if for a fact too. Tom Waits, Springsteen etc have been spotted at Case concerts, sometimes wearing funny hats.. hehe.
Right! Guys like Case, Clark, and Kristofferson chased the art while most of the others chased the money! That's the same thing that Willie, Waylon, Tompall, Jerry Jeff, and a bunch of others did by telling Nashville to "kiss off" and went and did it their way. You gotta respect someone that loves the craft more than the money!! Have a good one!!

Man I'm a huge Bob Dylan fan, but I'm starting to think Guy Clark is a better songwriter.
