  • Ok, so it starts at 3:03 minutes.

    Outrageously expressive,

and real showmanship balancing and throwing the bass at the start

    and end of the video.

It is more than showmanship in that it shows his complete mastery and

what appears to be reckless abandon but is an exstension of spirit

There are very few original players out there. Myself I am lucky to be playing with James Mobius,

  • Learn this or die: When you are in the evil heart of your addiction, it seems like you can't concentrate creatively on your art. That's a chemical lie of the poison-substance you're taking. It has alienated you from your love, your art. The only way to beat this lie is to lay your art down, go into continual treatment WHILE discontinuing use. This you make a permanence. As you learn about the nature of addiction, you'll relearn true love, hate, and slowly pick your art up along the way.

  • Best Bass Boy

  • these Japanese fans must have all been given free blow by Jaco before the show

  • Gosh, could the crowd please shut the hell up?!

  • he sounds like he's never picked up a bass before and is just plucking notes

  • @beakon7 And you sound like you know absolutely nothing about bass playing. Next time refrain from posting because it shows what a completely ignorant loser fool you are. All you did is make a fool out of yourself.

  • @beakon7 ahaahahaha...die stupid man!!!

  • what a self indulgent piece of crap

  • @beakon7 What, your post?

  • @beakon7 where are you playing thus week?

    jerk

  • Every time I watch a video with Jaco in it, I always press the Like button before watching the video. I KNOW it will be awesome.

  • I met Jaco in 1980. A real genius. I'm a bassist and he changed my life forever. Thank you, Jaco!!!

  • The one who killed Jaco was a Gigant stupid

  • he looks so bad here, he's nasty and his bass is scummy. but he sounds so good.

    rip Jaco

  • this sounds like one of those 'shreds' videos

  • ja so arbeitet man eben als bassist...

  • punk meets jazz and classic in one genius mind at the same time

  • RIP

  • Its hard to see this video. All that showing of. He looks so bad here; worn out, tired. RIP

  • I almost thought he was going to slam his bass rock style at 0:24 lol

  • I saw Jaco at Taco Bell in New Bedford on Sunday....he was eating a chulupa with fire sauce!

  • the "bass of doom" is so funny. it's absolutley shagged yet he makes it sing ;)

  • i throw my bass up in the air sometimes, saying AYYYOOOO I'm JACO!

  • Jaco Pastorius Genius !!!

  • One of a kind the late GREAT Jaco.....

  • In honor of Bud Powell, who still lives...remember Jaco Pastorius and all the other "fallen Musical geniuses"...may they all rest in peace !

  • Dont compare anyone with JACO Mr. JACO was/is GENIUS

  • jaco got killed by a doorman, got beaten up in front of a club and died because of the injuries. what a shame. RIP jaco

  • @EmotionalShredd Did the doorman got punished?...

  • one of music's most undersung heroes.

  • jaco master of bassists ! don't rest in peace, keep making music even if we can't hear you.. 3:54 Black bird!!!!

  • That audience should shut up and listen...

  • greatest bass player of all time....such a shame that he got himself into drugs and started to go downward...........

  • The crowd was on fire that night!!!! He could had spat at the crowd and they would had loved it.

  • i got scared when he was throwing his bass around

  • Cliff Burton and Jaco probably are bass duo-ing up there.

  • Great!!!!

  • jaco rules!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol, crowd is so funny

  • john entwistle

  • woow ....can't describe it .....respect

  • Jaco was the best! I saw him live in Toronto. This video doesn't do him justice, though. We fans will love it, but there is not enough substance here to impress someone who's never heard of him before.

  • Now I see why the bass of doom is so relic'd... Either way Jaco will always be the best

  • This guy's my hero.

  • love you JACO

  • This was the first time I saw and felt that he was not good. I remember something about the 84' Live Under the Sky. He passed a lot of different and mad moments but all these moments will never erase his unbelievable presence. I will love Jaco forever and ever...........

  • It's so tantalizing that there was nobody who could have helped him. I read Milkowski's book once from first letter to last, was not able to do it again for long, then many times only the glorious years. It is so painful every time. Rest in peace, Jaco. You will live in our hearts forever!

  • has Gil Evans fired JAco after that ?? lol

  • Jaco was the absolute best! Anyone who can't see that knows nothing of this instrument or music. R.I.P. Jaco!

  • @JMWorship how dare you...

  • Notice the mud on his pants... there is a part in the book JACO that explains what happened before this show. He disappeared all day. Then right before they were supposed to go on he showed up. He had slid down a hill in his clothes and was completely trashed.

  • Yea and apparently this bass smashed when it it the ground, and he didn't have another. So this was the only tune he did that night. (I think)

  • Music isn't about Looks... It's about playing skill. The Instrument doesn't define the Player.

  • you are obviously NOT a musician

  • you're kidding.... right?

  • Comment removed

  • What an amazing talent!

  • That video is fucking sweet

  • tat? what is tat, your fu[ckin weird

  • Jesus. I wish the ppl would stop whooping and whistling, and clapping. So annoying, why can't ppl just enjoy the music? Anyway, hes amazing.

    uuuuu iiiiiiii ieaaaaaa

  • wow look at his bass its ruined, but oh soo awesome still

  • Man tats Jaco's first bass ever. The autodeffreted Fender Jazz. Tat bass is the most legendary ever. It dissapeared after tat nite. Still tat was the first ever Fender no fret bass and it was defretted by Jaco himself. Trust me theres no bass in the entire world tat can produce such a sweet sound as Jaco's bass. Fender makes 2 tribute models, Jaco Pastorius Tribute and Jaco Pastorius Relic. 2 of some of the most expensive Fender basses. One thing for sure RIP Jaco the best ever ^_^PEACE

  • nobody can make a bass sound like jaco... wouldn't help to hhave his bass either...

  • Ur rite man RIP J

aco hes my biggest inspiration and ine of the most beautifull persons ive seen ^_^ He is alive in our memoies great man PEACE

  • ich bin begeistert (martin from germany)

  • This is the most incredible stuff in the way to describe what does Jaco means for me and my music ideal.

  • amerika es la mejor de jaco. amerika is the best song of jaco pastorius.

    grande jaco!

  • did he catch his bass?

  • no, you can actualy hear it when it comes crashing down

  • No...

  • This makes me want to cry. Jaco looked so sic and with his hair cut he really didn't seem like the Jaco who was at the top of his game. It's sad to see how Jaco went from te top of Jazz in 1982 to this and lower in '84 onwards.

  • and that is how it is done................

  • Wasn't this in '86?

  • It makes me kinda mad. That security guard that killed him didn't have to kill him, he should've just restrained him.

  • doesn't matter, if the guy didn't kill him, then the drugs and his diseases would've. as sad as it is...its true =[

  • thats a very optimistic point of view you have there... haha

  • This is probably the last time this bass was seen in this condition. it was not long after this that he was in nyc and smashed it to bits. some guys in FL put it back together.

  • Like I was watching Forrest Gump playing bass... Awesome!

  • GOD!

  • that kinda scared me the way he was acting, but i luv the way he playd

  • Jaco,Jimi,Django

  • the most great bass player ever, he can`t be comparated whit victor wooten, is a genius

    Jaco Pastorius > ALL

  • dammm the legend

  • he is a genius, this was only 3 years before he died

  • Jaco, Jimi, Ginger!!!

  • Now THAT would put the super back in supergroup!

  • You don't get crowds like that too often anymore do ya? :P

  • thats sad

  • Damn... He looks terrible!!!

  • genius

  • kinda looks like stings bass, looking so messed up like that. but it sounds awsome.

  • not really, sting plays a 51 p bass and jacos is like a 74 jazz (or something like that) I think I saw a 3-bolt neck

  • What I read about Jaco behaviour problems it was that he suffer of bipolar disease. He suffered depression and maniac beahaviours

  • Jacko was a wonderfully skilled, fearless and inventive musician. He was also a born showman and entertainer. Like so many other great musicians he also suffered from serious psychiatric problems which went untreated. He became unreliable and lost many gigs. They eventually led to great tragedy.

  • A jazz legend, a musical visionary, what a shame he's gone, an absolutely tragic and senseless loss..........

  • maybe joni mitchell should have rang john entwisle for his services, but maybe she was advised by the high caliber musicians that she played with the jaco could do it all, both are gone now,but jaco had more harmonic knowledge in the dirt under his fingernails than mr entwistle had in his whole lifetime

  • maybe john entwistle could play circles around jaco so what this guy played from the heart and took the bass to another level before its time.

  • Yeah, The Who are awesome. John Entwistle, Bonham, Pete and Roger,... all awesome and great songs with a message and power. I used to have a weather report album in the early 80s but I find other bass players more interesting, like Norwood Fisher from Fishbone-he is sooo cool, and Rush's bass player Geddy Lee rocks to on earlier stuff. Your are right though, the song execution is the most important.

  • Bonham? Umm.... Bonham played drums for LED ZEPPELIN.

You are thinking of Keith Moon. And you should address everyone the same, eh? Entwhistle, Moon, Daltrey and Townshend, or Jhon, Keith, Roger and Pete.

  • Of course I meant Moonie. And I was actually replying to someone's comment who knew what I was talking about so I don't have to go into detail about their full name. It's only your opinion and if you think people should cater to your needs then you need to chill out. But thanks for pointing out my mistake. And, I was listening to the Who and Led Zeppelin before you were born and I've read most of their biographies. People do make mistakes. Thanks for caring.

  • BTW, you spelled John Entwistle wrong. You spelled it with an H- so you should give the deceased some respect.

  • you made a mistake, just swollow the fact.

  • you must not have listened to songs like "kuru/speak like a child" or "used to be a cha-cha" from his debut CD because those songs, like most of his songs, have some killer bass lines that aren't just lead bass shit. do i sense some jealousy? you stupid moron.

  • Real sad , poor jaco .. The Greatest Bass Player of the World in the dig .. I'm very sad..

  • JACO! He was the electric bass; what a genius and pioneer. He payed homage to his roots, and took it all to another level with his energy and charisma! Rest in peace J.P.!

  • he was a genius...

  • that latest jaco stuff isn't nearly as good as his oldest stuff before he got onto drugs, its such a shame, hardly anyone ever got to see him at his very best.

  • for everybody who doesn't seem to think this is jaco, look at his bass . that's jaco's fender fretless, unless someone stole his bass before he died. R.I.P

  • That's Jaco alright, but someone did steal his bass.

  • yep, while he was playing basket on the street

  • how can u mistake jaco 4 that emo bassist wannabe u should be ashamed of yourself.say no 2 emo. but anyway gr8 vid.

  • short hair days...

  • Damn, this guy owns the fretless bass damnit, maybe not his best song, but definitely shows his talent.

Everybody asking about how he plays such "basic" notes and gets so wildly cheered... Those notes are harmonics played OFF of the fretboard. He's using his thumb to play the harmonics at some stages, the harmonic notes are so easy to miss down there, imagine if the fretboard continued that far down how small the frets would go - that's why it's insane.

    He's Victor Wooten's biggest inspiration.

  • you are amazing..!

  • I saw Panic At The Disco, but I don't think the bass player was Jaco. Does he play for Dashboard Confessional?

Thanx! <<<<<< WHAT THE HELL. GET A LIFE YOU RETARD.

  • jimothy60, please kill yourself. that is beyond insulting to jaco. he is a legend. those bands u named r stupid emo fads.

  • wow ur a fuckin fag fuck you ya dumb bitch why r u even watchin this fucking homo

  • I'm pretty sure that's the stupidest thing ever said. ever.

  • I sure hope jimothy60 is joking..

  • ahhh does he catch the bass!!!!!

  • Nope. Thats the broken 'bass of death'.

  • are you fucking retarded? he got beaten to death

  • i love jaco and everything he has done for the bass, he turned it all around, but its horrible to watch this i personally think, its great yes, not as great as his over videos tho, he just looks so worn out and trodden into the ground, i think he was on his last legs here:S :( jaco was a bass god tho, if it wasn't for him we probably wouldn't have half of the amazing bassist we have now. R.I.P Jaco

  • sorry guys i just cant get into it.... i dont understand why the crowd cheers when he plays two notes? it's just not my cup of tea

  • To not let him down.

  • yeah, there's a lot of simplicity and shallowness in it

  • thats by far the stupidest thing ive ever read. ever.

  • i can only agree so much. Gene Simmons is a brutal bass player, I mean he does his job and gets tonnes of money, but he clearly is no Jaco. He's not even as good as Geezer Butler, let alone THE Jaco Pastorius! How dumb can someone be...

  • realy man gene simmons sucks is make up value more than is bass haha owned mother fucker

  • lmfao!!! thumbs up to that!

  • Dude... Gene Simmons sucks badly... All he was doing was a big BIG show, but damn his riff sucked like HELL!!! Even Cliff Williams from AC/DC was better then Gene Simmons! People can say stupid things sometimes...

  • ur a dumb asshole no one that could would play for a terrible band like fall out boy or panic

  • you are a fucking piece of shit you wish that fag was like Jaco

  • Poor Jaco was on a mission to die young - thats the saddest thing of all! He was seeking his own destruction.

The guy seriously needed help and nobody could give it to him. What a tragic story.

  • dude... at 1:14sec... he looks just like Beethoven... coincidence.. i think not!!! hahaha

  • HA-HA!!! Right on man! At least they share the same level of madness and geniusity! ..could be Beethoven re-encarnated... although, jaco didn't get blind or deaf, he just got beaten up to death.. all geniuses have bad ending, that's for sure!...

  • the best bass player for me. Rip mr. Jaco, youll forever be in our hearts.

  • check out "Donna Lee". Tell me if that impresses you...

  • well Donna Lee was good man...thanks!

Now, I have another impression of Mr. Pastorius.

    Greetings!

  • he is simply the best...just like hendrix ...true Expression

  • Jaco is the greatest ever. Because all of those guys you listed got to learn from jaco. He innovated the instrument. Genius.

  • billy sjeehan????

those guys u said has SKILLS but jaco revolucionated it all man...

jaco is the teacher of those guys....

i bet they ve started playing bass because of jaco

  • hey I bet you're right. Jaco was the best but he had a big ass.... too big for his body.

He was a nice man and that bouncer who killed him at that club Jaco went to should be in jail for murder, that mother fucker

  • last I read in guitar player magazine,he was beaten into a coma outside a seedy nightclub in fort Lauderdale by a club manager and his bouncers. What a shame such a talent was snuffed out far too early...

  • In the first take he looks like Tom Hanks, isn't he?

    Great musician...

  • he didnt die, he was murdered ,apparently

  • Soy nueva escuela en
