Jaco was the best! I saw him live in Toronto. This video doesn't do him justice, though. We fans will love it, but there is not enough substance here to impress someone who's never heard of him before.
This was the first time I saw and felt that he was not good. I remember something about the 84' Live Under the Sky. He passed a lot of different and mad moments but all these moments will never erase his unbelievable presence. I will love Jaco forever and ever...........
non è possibile ke la vita di quest'uomo dia finita in modo così tragico grazie a quel buttafuori di merda ke l'ha ammazzato....secondo voi un bassista così doveva vivere solo 35 anni?
It's so tantalizing that there was nobody who could have helped him. I read Milkowski's book once from first letter to last, was not able to do it again for long, then many times only the glorious years. It is so painful every time. Rest in peace, Jaco. You will live in our hearts forever!
El video en parte es emocionante, un poco triste... ese bajo detenido en el aire al final es una imagen muy bella.

This makes me want to cry. Jaco looked so sic and with his hair cut he really didn't seem like the Jaco who was at the top of his game. It's sad to see how Jaco went from te top of Jazz in 1982 to this and lower in '84 onwards.
This is probably the last time this bass was seen in this condition. it was not long after this that he was in nyc and smashed it to bits. some guys in FL put it back together.
Jacko was a wonderfully skilled, fearless and inventive musician. He was also a born showman and entertainer. Like so many other great musicians he also suffered from serious psychiatric problems which went untreated. He became unreliable and lost many gigs. They eventually led to great tragedy.
maybe joni mitchell should have rang john entwisle for his services, but maybe she was advised by the high caliber musicians that she played with the jaco could do it all, both are gone now,but jaco had more harmonic knowledge in the dirt under his fingernails than mr entwistle had in his whole lifetime

john entwistle can play circles around jaco. the only people i find that seem to worship jaco and love his playing, are other lead bass wannabees. THE SONG IS MOST IMPRTANT YOU FOOLS! NOT JUST ONE INSTRUMENT
Yeah, The Who are awesome. John Entwistle, Bonham, Pete and Roger,... all awesome and great songs with a message and power. I used to have a weather report album in the early 80s but I find other bass players more interesting, like Norwood Fisher from Fishbone-he is sooo cool, and Rush's bass player Geddy Lee rocks to on earlier stuff. Your are right though, the song execution is the most important.
Bonham? Umm.... Bonham played drums for LED ZEPPELIN.
You are thinking of Keith Moon. And you should address everyone the same, eh? Entwhistle, Moon, Daltrey and Townshend, or Jhon, Keith, Roger and Pete.
Of course I meant Moonie. And I was actually replying to someone's comment who knew what I was talking about so I don't have to go into detail about their full name. It's only your opinion and if you think people should cater to your needs then you need to chill out. But thanks for pointing out my mistake. And, I was listening to the Who and Led Zeppelin before you were born and I've read most of their biographies. People do make mistakes. Thanks for caring.
you must not have listened to songs like "kuru/speak like a child" or "used to be a cha-cha" from his debut CD because those songs, like most of his songs, have some killer bass lines that aren't just lead bass shit. do i sense some jealousy? you stupid moron.
JACO! He was the electric bass; what a genius and pioneer. He payed homage to his roots, and took it all to another level with his energy and charisma! Rest in peace J.P.!
that latest jaco stuff isn't nearly as good as his oldest stuff before he got onto drugs, its such a shame, hardly anyone ever got to see him at his very best.
for everybody who doesn't seem to think this is jaco, look at his bass . that's jaco's fender fretless, unless someone stole his bass before he died. R.I.P
Damn, this guy owns the fretless bass damnit, maybe not his best song, but definitely shows his talent.
Everybody asking about how he plays such "basic" notes and gets so wildly cheered... Those notes are harmonics played OFF of the fretboard. He's using his thumb to play the harmonics at some stages, the harmonic notes are so easy to miss down there, imagine if the fretboard continued that far down how small the frets would go - that's why it's insane.
i love jaco and everything he has done for the bass, he turned it all around, but its horrible to watch this i personally think, its great yes, not as great as his over videos tho, he just looks so worn out and trodden into the ground, i think he was on his last legs here:S :( jaco was a bass god tho, if it wasn't for him we probably wouldn't have half of the amazing bassist we have now. R.I.P Jaco
i can only agree so much. Gene Simmons is a brutal bass player, I mean he does his job and gets tonnes of money, but he clearly is no Jaco. He's not even as good as Geezer Butler, let alone THE Jaco Pastorius! How dumb can someone be...
Dude... Gene Simmons sucks badly... All he was doing was a big BIG show, but damn his riff sucked like HELL!!! Even Cliff Williams from AC/DC was better then Gene Simmons! People can say stupid things sometimes...
HA-HA!!! Right on man! At least they share the same level of madness and geniusity! ..could be Beethoven re-encarnated... although, jaco didn't get blind or deaf, he just got beaten up to death.. all geniuses have bad ending, that's for sure!...
last I read in guitar player magazine,he was beaten into a coma outside a seedy nightclub in fort Lauderdale by a club manager and his bouncers. What a shame such a talent was snuffed out far too early...
Ok, so it starts at 3:03 minutes.
Outrageously expressive,
and real showmanship balancing and throwing the bass at the start
and end of the video.
It is more than showmanship in that it shows his complete mastery and
what appears to be reckless abandon but is an exstension of spirit
There are very few original players out there. Myself I am lucky to be playing with James Mobius,

nrmignonne 2 years ago

i love jaco and everything he has done for the bass, he turned it all around, but its horrible to watch this i personally think, its great yes, not as great as his over videos tho, he just looks so worn out and trodden into the ground, i think he was on his last legs here:S :( jaco was a bass god tho, if it wasn't for him we probably wouldn't have half of the amazing bassist we have now. R.I.P Jaco

Gene Simmons from KISS would put this guy to shame.
kwhite20032000 3 years ago
thats by far the stupidest thing ive ever read. ever.
kevin1lorange 3 years ago 7
i can only agree so much.

Poor Jaco was on a mission to die young - thats the saddest thing of all! He was seeking his own destruction.
The guy seriously needed help and nobody could give it to him. What a tragic story.

dude... at 1:14sec... he looks just like Beethoven... coincidence.. i think not!!! hahaha
xgerbx 3 years ago 5
HA-HA!!! Right on man! At least they share the same level of madness and geniusity! ..could be Beethoven re-encarnated... although, jaco didn't get blind or deaf, he just got beaten up to death.. all geniuses have bad ending, that's for sure!...

hey I bet you're right. Jaco was the best but he had a big ass.... too big for his body.
He was a nice man and that bouncer who killed him at that club Jaco went to should be in jail for murder, that mother fucker
oooowwwwdddd 3 years ago
last I read in guitar player magazine,he was beaten into a coma outside a seedy nightclub in fort Lauderdale by a club manager and his bouncers. What a shame such a talent was snuffed out far too early...
